Answer to Frank Vaughan:

I'm wondering whether you have installed Mobile Connectivity Update 2.00 on your 5mx?  If not, you will almost certainly need it to get a GPRS connection working.

Feel free to contact me either by e-mail or a message on the Psion Place Forums if you need further assistance.  I could e-mail the update file
to you if you don't have it or know where to find it.

People

I've just been through the massive XP download and the Windows update is sitting on my PC ready to install. However before I commit myself are there any adverse effects on PsiWin (or any other relevant software) I should be aware of?

Or am I going to be the first person here to try out the procedure?

Armin,

>> The QWERTY keyboard lay-out was introduced to slow down typists > so that the mechanism of the early typewriters didn't jam.

Any proof for that?<<

This is the generally accepted explanation of the origins of the QWERTTY layout; for more information, see http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventions/story098.htm

>>If there really was a layout before QWERT which caused more typewriter jam, then switching to QWERT would lead to a speed up instead a slow down.<<

In effect yes, insofar as a typist who is forced to type slower by the keyboard layout, therefore avoiding jamming, is probably quicker in the long-term than a typist typing faster but suffering more jamming.

>> We no longer need to be slowed down but our computer keyboards still have the QWERTY lay-out.

So, which layout is quicker? <<

If the keyboard were to be redesigned, and I think this has been tried (unsuccessfully) in the past, some more ergonomic design would be arrived at. However, most people are familar with the QWERTY layout or its variants (at work, we have Swiss-German QWERTZ keyboards instead).

Cheers, Ian.

Hi Daniel,
I used T-Mobile aka Voicestream.  I have my Netbook, Series 7 and 5mx working fine for email.  I have not set them up for GPRS yet as I am still trying to figure out the 5mx Settings.  I will be glad to help you on the settings and I let me know how much you want for your Ericssion and I might be able to help you on the USA mains cord.  I live in Washington State, not sure where you are.  Drop me a note and maybe we can get together.

Thanks,

Bob

Frank,

>I'm using a Nokia 6310i and am seeking to use a GPRS connection

that should be possible ;-) My setup is identical exept I'm using a netBook most of the time.

I fear that you have trouble with the length of the init strings. The solution is to enter the configuration *completely in the phone*.

You need to create a GPRS connection profile (which is seperate from the WAP settings) where you
enter the settings:

Menu 4 7 should you take to the configuration dialog in your phone. The phone stores up to 5
configurations. Select one of them, preferably the first.

The record, in my case, has the following entries:
Alias for access point: eplus gprs (name it as you like)
GPRS acces point: internet.eplus.de (should differ in your case, ask your provider)

This setting has to be made the active setting.

On the "Xion" configure a standard infrared modem without any special settings. Mine is set up for
56000 Baud, and the only init string is "ATZ" for the reset sequence. All handshake options are
checked (RTS/CTS, DSR/DTR, DCD). I don't know the effect on an IR connection but for me it works.

The Internet settings are as follows:

Name: e-plus GPRS (name it as you like)
Type: dial up
smart dialling: not ticked
number: *99***1#

manual login: unticked
username/password: ask your provider

ip address from server: ticked
DNS from server: unticked (ticked may work, depending on the provider)
primary/secondary DNS: ask your provider

ppp extensions: ticked (this might save some bytes on the line)
clear text authentication: ticked (GPRS passwords aren't a secret because you are identified by your
SIM card, not your username/password).

If you create the directories C:\Logs\Etel & C:\Logs\Netdial you should get a bunch of log files
detailing the connection attempts.

I'd like to synchronise the Contacts on my RevoPlus with Outlook.

After running the synchronisation program, only 60 of the 350 Contacts in my Revo appear in Outlook. I tried doing another sync, but none of the remaining names are transferred from the Psion to Outlook.

Has anybody experienced this before? I'd be grateful for any solutions to get the sync working correctly.

From: Philip S.Adkins Potter
Subject: QWERTY

Hi Folks,

Armin, the QWERTY layout *was* introduced to slow typists down, any history of the typewriter will tell you that. I also remember it was in the "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" manual.

The earlier typewriters couldn't keep up with the typists so the QWERTY layout was adopted. The mechanical problem was that keys commonly used would be close together, for fingers from the index outwards (which are stronger and have greater stamina), drove heads that were close together and got in each other's way - they jammed.

Nowadays a far higher speed can be achieved on keyboards using the Dvorak layout (I think he was the composer's brother - I know he was related). The trouble now is that we are all so conservative that changing to the Dvorak layout generally would need the kind of sea-change that adopting Esperanto generally would need.

Similarly many years ago someone designed an "ideal man" to run a conventional lathe. His legs were very short, his arms very long and he was phenomenally short-sighted. They also designed an "ideal lathe" for an ordinary man. It was a wonderful thing to use but almost nobody outside Switzerland bought it.

Happy days,
Phil.

Hello Daniel

Question: Has anyone experience with Email and Cingular in the USA or Voicestream and can offer guidance as to set up and use with a Series 7.

VoiceStream in the US works great with PSION - setup is fairly straight forward, u would just need to know what phone your using and the dialup # for GPRS or GSM (you can email direct with subject : series 7 GPRS)
Have now changed over to VoiceStream GPRS and what a difference - Ericsson T610 with IR port connects great with 5mx & netbook (and you don't have to sacrifice faxing with this phone)

Subject: P910 - reading of back-ups

Did I already mention a great website for the SE P800/900/910 being www.my-symbian.com ?  From the main menu choose the UIQ section and than UIQ software catalog. I downloaded quite a few free programs from there, games as well as useful ones. Have a look under PC programs at "Backup Inspector".

One of the disadvantages of the standard back-up to the PC of this phone/PDA is that you can't open the back-up and check what is in it and not. This PC program will open your back-up and show you exactly which files are inside and not. By checking or unchecking the little box next to each of the files you can choose exactly which files you want to extract and which one(s) not. The files are than extracted to your PC to any folder you like. This means you can extract one file only if needed.

Hi all,

two posts I sent to 'The Digest' last week have not appeared in any edition that I have recieved.
Assuming this wasn't intentional by the moderators (joke) here are my 'reposts'

Subject Re: UIQ Phones

Hi all,
Itamar any general points on the p800 will have some relevance to your p910 as they are essentially the same but you have the latest version.

All these phones use flash memory internally and you cannot lose your data through having a flat battery (unlike a Revo).

Regarding Active Desk, well it's shareware so anyone can download it for free and buy it or delete it as they wish. I often visit the UIQ section at www.my-symbian.com as I  find it an excellent source of reference.

Regarding the OQO, Expansys are currently advertising these for nearly £1600 *eek*, it makes my £151 Toshiba Libretto from Ebay feel somewhat of a bargain. Personally I would wait for Paul Allen's 'Flipstart' pc which is a similar device but looks a lot slicker. I cannot touch type on my Libretto though I'm learning to on my p800 'Stowaway' bluetooth keyboard, I just wish the keyboard was curved or I could tilt it like my desktops...

About my bluetooth keyboard, I emailed Think Outside about the bug in their driver and they have sent me a new driver, when I get round to installing this I shall report back. I see no reason why any other brand of keyboard should be affected Itamar, but for me the benefits outweigh the minor side effect, after all I can still get at all my applications.

Regards,
Mike Dyer
on a Toshiba Libretto 70ct.

Subject Re: Email folders & Speakerphone

Hi all,
thanks for the confirmation Itamar about the email folders, also to Rolf for a very informative post on the p800.

Itamar I believe if you have dialled flip open you just tap on the speaker icon at the bottom of the screen during your call to switch to the speakerphone.

I would just like to say how pleased I am that there are so many UIQ phone users on the digest.

Best Wishes,
Mike Dyer.
