Subject: FW: 5mx and Nokia 6310i
In a personal mail I sent to one of you I confessed that my experience of
this list had restored my faith in humanity!! It's wonderful to find people
so prepared to share their time and experience.
I'm pleased to let you know that it's all been worthwhile! I seem to have
finally resolved my 5MX/6310i problem this evening. Although quite which
permutation in the changes to settings or adding of sis files did the trick
I'm not too sure. I suspect the TCP/IP update from Phil made the difference.
Thanks to him, but also to Victor, Julie, Jack and all for references to
support sites.
Based on your help, I can now claim some small expertise on connecting to
Vodafone in Ireland with a 6310i! I'll send settings to Mike McConnell's
site for reference.
Thanks again.
Frank.

Subject: Attaching Word files to e-mail
I suppose this is a classical problem.
When I write a document in EpocWord on my MC218, attach it to an e-mail, and
then receive it on a PC it cannot be opened directly.
Basically the same problem with documents in my Nokia 9210i.
And I understand it is also the case with netBook.
Is this due to incompatibility of the OS, or other problems?
Is it also the case with netBook Pro? Will it be with Nokia 9500?
I have only found two work-arounds:
- either to first save the document on the hard disk, and then open it. But it
leaves ugly empty squares in the beginning for formatting, and other
information.
- or to copy the Word file to the e-mail itself, and then copy it back to Word
in the PC. But what do we then need EpocWord for?
Or is there a third way?

David Steer wrote "I recently transferred 13 MP3 files to my Psion -A
total of about 36MB" - I wonder if you could say what programme you use on
your Psion for listening to MP3s? Also is there a simple way - for a bear of
very little brain - of converting music from an audio CD into MP3 for
transferring onto a Psion? While I'm here - is there any way of recording a
radio programme off an internet radio station with a dial up connection or
would it be just too painful? All assistance gratefully received...

David, I've got a wireless ADSL modem/router gateway attached to my desktop
computer. It would be nice to transfer files without PsiWin. Can you offer any
pointers without your going to too much trouble on what I would need to do so I
can transfer files through the air too? (I've got Win XP SP2 installed on the
desktop.)

infrared".
Hey is this the first time you are citing another mail? ;-)
> Sorry, I can't find that function on my T610.
OK, step by step:
1. Start plBeam on your Psion
2. On the T610 enter the menue (joystick right)
3. select "Pictures & sounds" (press the "7" key or use
the stick)
4. select "My sounds"
5. move cursor bar to ringtone you wish to beam (e.g. "OldPhone")
6. press "More"-key
7. select "Send" (on my T610 the 3rd option from above)
8. line up the infrared eyes
9. wait for finish of the transfer
10. escape plBeam
11. If you have a "Documents"-folder, you'll find a file with the
name of the ringtone plus extension ".mid". (E.g.
"OldPhone.mid".) Without a "Documents"-folder it will be in
"C:\".

Subject: Microsoft vs Nearly everyone else
Hello all,
Somehow I managed to NOT notice that on the 31 August the Business Case draft
PDF for netBook Pro Symbian OS was released on http://www.dp.com.my/ .
In particular, I found chapter 5.5 (pages 22 to 31) to be very enlightening
about the wide-spread market polarisation that is occuring between those
providing Microsoft products and those providing alternatives (based on Linux,
Symbian OS, etc). When companies even as big as IBM are showing these
signs, it (now) seems clear that this isn't just a passing fad.
Indeed, it apparently seems that even some of Microsoft's allies (e.g. MAPICS)
are acting more out of fear of (being bought by) Microsoft, than of a genuine
belief that Microsoft is best. [At least, if I understood a particular
footer correctly.]
It certainly seems as though Microsoft (perhaps because of greed or paranoia)
wants to make this a win-everything-or-loose-everything situation - and IMHO
that could well be their downfall, because they are encouraging 'everyone else'
to go against them. Partly to back this up, I would argue that Microsoft
has already indirectly created Linux (and to a lesser extent the enthusiasm for
the whole Open Source movement), because of their past behaviour, and of course
Linux is now one of Microsoft's biggest threats...
Anyway, I thought this was a very interesting take on why Psion should produce
a Symbian OS variant of it's Netbook Pro, to compliment it's WinCE .net
version. Although I don't believe Psion will pay any attention, nor do I
intend to wait forever for mythical device, so I'll probably be get a Nokia
9300 at some point - even though it lacks a touch screen.

Chris Handley, in a slightly philosophical mood, and he hopes that any replies
will be in a similar vein (and size:)...
P.S. I somehow get a mention in the credits for document, although I
don't think I did anything particularly deserving of that, beyond my occasional
public thoughts about the Netbook and EPOC!

Subject: P910 - battery usage cont.
Ok, so I make sure every day that when not in the car my Bluetooth is off. And
still, yesterday I took the phone out of the cradle at around 6.00 pm and close
to midnight half the battery had gone. I did use it to check my diary, played
around let's say 20 minutes or so and made one or two phone calls.
The only other reason I could think of is that the Voice dialing might take a
lot of battery power as it must be ready / scanning all the time whether the
magic word is being said or not, so I now switched that off as well.
What do other users do when working "heavily" on it like for example
extensive emailing, word files or spreadsheet work ?

Answer to: Itamar,
>>Re.: QWERTY keyboard - Do you remember the old typewriters jamming
? You had 4, 5 or 6 letters all stuck and intertwined and it was
difficult to put it right again and you would always get dirty hands, ie
washing your hands before continueing your work. I am only 51 years old, but
remember it well, I learnt to type that way at Business School, just before the
IBM ball started to get into general use.<<
Luckily, I'm far too young to remember such primitive technology <G> My
first experience of typing was on the wonderfully tactile ZX81 keyboard,
followed by the ever so slightly better Sinclair Spectrum rubber keyboard; mind
you, there was no problem with either the keys jamming or being able to type
too fast...
Cheers, Ian.

Re.: wireless pc card for 7book - Hi Ian, unfortunately for you the S7 will not
work with a wireless card. You will need the netBook or the Malaysian netBook
for this.

Re.: Landscape view on P800?900?910 - If the book reader can function in
landscape, I suppose other programs could as well. Does anyone know of a
program to use this phone in landscape mode ?
