Subject: RTF
Hi Folks,
Trygve, you replied to my "But the RTF option was originally a free add-on from Psion." saying that it wasn't as the MC had it in ROM, and I'm sure you're right - but I have never even seen an MC except in pictures.
I can't now remember how I got the .DYLs and RCom but it was certainly both honest and free. It might have been from Steve Litchfield but more likely from Psion or a magazine disk. I've never used PsiWin. My 3a was made before PsiWin came out and when my other Psions were obtained I didn't use a PC - and still don't.
I'm sure that the RTF format does not *belong* to M's**t. They may have defined it initially but if so they put it in the public domain immediately - and then started producing and distributing non-standard .RTF files. Their word-processors seem to specialise in saving different RTF formats!
Owen, I agree that RTF is better in many ways than HTML - but most eMail clients on PCs and Macs automatically render HTML which is the point. Word Processor documents are another matter and here RTF is far more portable than most other formats, though I imagine you have to specify RTF usually whether saving or importing. You certainly used to.
But you are right about some HTML attachments *automatically* opening an I'Net connection. I've had them sent to me. Opening them on my Mac they try to connect - try because my modem is off unless I'm using it. I suppose there's not much choice if the modem's internal. The same happened when I only used my 5mx.
I personally never use anything other than text for eMail and I would urge others to do the same. But if they won't or can't, whatever the reason, then HTML is more common and easier to read than RTF in most eMail programs.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Re: GPRS and SmtpAuth?
Itamar,
>I noticed that the P910 has an extra setting called "address" where I had to enter the word "internet" for Vodaphone, but my mBook does not have this option. Maybe it is time for SmtpAuth ?
Not yet, at least not in order to solve your problem. Your phone has to be designed to work as a GPRS "modem" (better said, a GPRS router) for your computer or organizer. The "address" field is crucial as it designates the GPRS access point within the network that routes your packets to the Internet. Typically, WAP connections use a different access point from which your phone can only reach the
WAP gateway which proxies your requests. Read back a few issues what I wrote about my
netBook/Nokia GPRS setup. It's probably similar for your phone.
SmtpAuth fights a diferent problem, the lack of authentication in EPOC Mail for *outgoing* messages. POP3, the protocol for incoming mail has always been with authentication. Both can only do their job if the Internet connection is established (what GPRS is made for.)

PsiWin keeps hold of the serial port so it can auto-detect when you attach your Psion, you can release it by right clicking on the Psion icon in the System tray (bottom right) & selecting the Close option.
Don't forget to double click on 'My Psion' icon on your desktop, the next time you connect the Psion.
Tip - Buy a 9 pin male to female serial extension cable, it saves having to grope around the back of the PC, less than £5 in any Maplin store in the UK, should be similar shops in other countries.

This made me laugh :o)
As an aside the new edition of 'Palmtop User' is now out, with a review of the Nokia 9500 - surely now the best palmtop currently on sale, and the Sony Ericsson p910i - surely the best smartphone currently on sale.
Regarding my car kit, alas I do not have a BMW, I have a Citroen!, I bought an official Sony Ericsson cradle from Expansys, the connectors underneath the phone are duplicated underneath the cradle and here I plug in a 12v lead from the cigarette lighter and earpiece/microphone. When driving I leave the 'Phone' application running with the speeddial photographs of my regular contacts, then I can dial them with one finger press if neccessary.
Regarding my GPRS problem, I did some research on Google Groups and found I have been inadvertantly a naughty boy by switching the phone off during a GPRS session. Apparently this can confuse the cellphone companies software into thinking you are still connected when in fact you are not. As a consequence your next attempt to reconnect is rejected as the software thinks you are already connected.
Since then I have manually dropped my GPRS connection if I need to switch the phone off before the time out and have had no further problems.
My p800 works brilliantly with this Toshiba Libretto 70ct on GPRS but I first ran the Sony Ericsson connection wizard on my desktop pc and then copied the settings over to the lib.
Regarding Psion personality of the year - Hi Will hows issue 3 coming along?, will we be receiving it before Christmas?
Regarding 'Agile Messenger', Itamar this is not texting over GPRS but a version of the desktop computer instant messaging programs for UIQ, it works for all the major desktop systems. Go to www.allaboutsymbian.com and click on the link to 'Steve Litchfields guide to UIQ freeware' you will find it listed there with a number of other gems.
This is a killer app if you are into this sort of thing, I 'chatted' for an hour in real time from p800 to my friends desktop pc for 80 pence in GPRS charges!!!
Best Wishes,

Re.: Ring tones - Hi, you gorget one thing, the T610 will not switch on without a SIM card so how can one send ring tones from one phone to the other if you can only activate one phone at a time ? Anyhow, as said, you can download them all from the website of Sony-Ericsson.
Answer to: Mike Dyer
Re. Ring tones - Yes, thanks, I did download the Oldphone tone from the website of SE and it does work without problems. I like it too as it is clearly different from ALL other phones, hardly anyone uses it.

Re.: Psion Personality of the Year 2004 - It is a pitty that you did not allow for voting by using a Psion, for example quote the email addresses to vote in the digest. Secondly, you did not ask the nominated people if they agree to be nominated. Maybe someone is not interested ? Otherwise a nice idea.

Have WL$RTF.DYL and WS$RTF.DYL in an old 3a backup from 1995 in the APP directory, later I put it into WDR. And I never used RCom or PsiWin (I'm on a Mac).
I think I remember that those files where in the ROM of the soap on a rope. Let's see... I just found some .img and .dyl files on it, also some other extensions. Only the 3a I am just using to search the 3link has a bad screen with vertical stripes on it. Not easy to read file names that way...
Most of the stuff on the 3link seems to be for the Comms application though.
I guess I have to put the old files back to a Series 3 to search in my
own FAQs. Some time...
Still, what a very nice computer!

David, thanks for the suggestions on wireless FTPing with the netBook. I have mine set and it works (finally) like magic! I temporarily swamped my ADSL gateway by entering a huge range of ports to monitor. Took a few days to finally fix that problem. (Easy once you know how.) Now I've got the port range set from 1024 to 2024. I'm using passive mode.
is there an optimum port range to use?
Also, is it possible to use a backup program to backup a netBook over this connection?
What do others do with FTP connections on their Psions?
This is way cool! (Yeah, I am easily wowed.)

In the bottom right hand corner of the task bar there should be a black horizontal line with an arrow head at each end. It wiggles when the Psion is connected and is straight when not. Right click on that and hit close.

Yes. Change your e-mail address and keep the new one off the www and Usenet. This list is OK, as the e-mail addresses are not posted on the public web based archive. If you have to participate on the Usenet or chatrooms and other web based services, I suggest using a disposable e-mail address from one of the free providers (Hotmail etc.) for this and changing it whenever the spam becomes excessive. Reserve your personal e-mail address for friends, family and "safe" places like this digest.
If you want to avoid changing your e-mail address, your first line of defence would be a web search for your own address and make sure it is deleted from anywhere it appears on the www. Things will improve very gradually as you start practicing safe e-mailing. If the spam starts increasing again, it's time to do another web search for your address. Also, make sure nobody leaves your address on the www in "send to a friend" etc.
I have not received ANY spam to this e-mail address for the past couple of years!

RTF was a joint collaboration between Microsoft and Apple. (Another such collaboration was True Type fonts). MS got RTF wrong in various versions of Word and renamed it Word RTF which they claimed was a different format, rather than admit their mistake.

the problem, I have, is deeper and more seriously.
Of course, I'm closing both the Psion connection and the CopyAnyWhere program by right clicking in the System tray.
But after this MochaPPP doesn't want connect with Psion. The Mocha dialog shows "Bytes fro Palm = 0, Bytes to Palm = 0"
It should be a problem with Windows XP home. I never experienced such problem with Windows98.
The onliest solution to put thinks right is, to reboot the PC.
May be there is an easier solution??

Thank you for the tip, but I don't need such a zero-modem-cable, because the cable is permanently connected to the PC. I connect my Psion only for down- and uploading emails, in rare cases to copy files or run a SIS file and for backuping in the night. The other time it is on the table or in my jacket.

Subject: Handy Expense - cont.
So I installed the synchronisation software on the PC and am somewhat disappointed. The program gives a screen which shows all the expenses in a list, much like an excel sheet, but you can't print from there. You have to export the details first to a .csv file and open it with excel. It just shows the expenses but does not give any totals per currency or per type of cost or per category, this you have to do yourself in the excel file.
It works and with some knowledge of excel you can easily transform the data in a workable report, but my feeling is that they could have made this part a lot nicer with some nice reporting and totals for different currencies and total in the home currency.

This has never been a problem for me. Using my 3a with Rcom and a DOS menu/batch program, it was very quick and easy to convert my 3aWord documents to my desktop wp.
Select the 'Convert 3a to WC' option, after connecting my 3a to my desktop. Enter base name of 3a file and hit return. This would copy the file to the desktop, run the Rcom utility, open Wordcraft (my wp) with the text already loaded.
Going on to EPOC, I've always used the export to text file with Psion Word.
However I now use EPOC Word as my main wp. All my letters are typed and printed from a Psion. Why bother will M$ Word, when you've got Psions.
Then Philip S.Adkins Potter <address truncated> wrote:-

Which is not a problem with text files. I've never know a decent wp that can't import text files.
