Hi Chris,
I have already decided not to renew my subscription to Palmtop as it has less and less items of interest to me.  Especially if they, and I am not surprised, don't have any more Psion stuff.

Thanks,
Bob

Alan,

>>Going on to EPOC, I've always used the export to text file with Psion Word.

However I now use EPOC Word as my main wp.  All my letters are typed and printed from a Psion.  Why bother will M$ Word, when you've got Psions.<<

I do much the same. However, exporting to text does not really solve the original problem; how to send a nicely formatted Word document (ie. with bold, italics, different font sizes etc.) via email to a recipient who is not using a Psion? If you export as text, you lose all the formatting. The whole point of using Word (or whichever word processor) is that you can do so much more than with a simple text editor; for many people, this is not an option. I still stand by what I originally said; this problem could have been avoided if Psion had simply left the export as RTF option in Word, rather than removing it. As it is, I use nConvert to convert Word documents prior to emailing them on the (rare!) occasions when this is necessary.

Cheers, Ian.

Subject: Port occupation by PsiWin & Mocha[Scanned]

Rolf

Windows XP introduces a number of extra problems which is why I try to
avoid it by staying with Windows 2000, however I still get to sort out
other peoples XP problems.

I assume you are using Mocha to allow you to share the modem on your PC,
if so you need login as Administrator & check the following.

You need to enable modem/ADSL sharing in Windows XP - Click Control
Panel, Network & dial up connections, Right click Internet connection,
select Properties then Sharing Tab, tick Enable Internet sharing for
this connection.

You need to disable or reconfigure the XP firewall so XP does not stop
Mocha from working, or better still allow Mocha through the firewall.

I suggest that you also remove Mocha before implementing Windows XP SP2
& then re-installing it, as it includes many changes on the networking
side & there is a slight risk of the PC not booting up. Next Monday I
have the task of sorting out a brand new Windows XP PC that won't boot
up after installing SP2. I will see if I have time to obtain more
details on firewall config.

The above is an XP problem as there are similar issues if you network 2
XP PCs, as a non SP2 PC cant see files on an SP2 PC.

Mike

Answer to: All

Re.: Palmtop Issue  9 - Indeed, EPOC is gone from the magazine leaving Will's Psion magazine the only one left. There are several interesting items in the magazine however :
- laser beam keyboard now available (www.simplesolutions-uk.com)
- 5MX Pro 32 Mb still available from Clove, Gbp 225.-
- HP Ipaq h6300 has got thumbboard
- UIQ updated to v. 3.0, although phones with this version will be at least another year.
- reviews of the Nokia 9500 and the SE P910

Answer to: Rolf Vonau

Re.: Port occupation - I use MochaPPP at home on WindowsXP Home as well and when I close Psiwin it will always work. Maybe you have another program that occupies COM1 without you knowing it ? Is there a way to find out which program occupies the port ?

Answer to: Alan Morris

Re.: Word for email - Why bother with other file types when using a Psion ? Well, if you want to send a WORD file to someone else they can't open the Psion word file.

I think, Chris, we simply couldn't find anything worthwhile to review at the time. Now that TubeRoute's out, of course, I'll try and review that for issue 10. 8-))

Much as I'm a Psion fan, it's been years now since Psion stopped making them and there haven't been any commercial EPOC developers for ages either. We're still going to mention the Psion here and there in PTU, but the world moves on... At least you've got the Psion Computer Journal to carry the flag, plus of course the numerous Psion web sites (e.g. 3-Lib!)

And I can't believe that ANY Psion owner will keep using it once the Nokia 9500 and 7710 become available in volume. They do everything the Psion could do and more besides. ____________________________________________________________________

Howdy!

I understand that this may cause problems for the digest crew, but this problem is in the stupid SPAM checkers, not my text. I do not accept consorship whether it's from a person or a machine. There are many valid reasons for mentioning this medical product in an e-mail and it is not my fault that some people have decided to abuse the e-mail system for economic gain.

The people who are using SPAM checkers to filter their e-mail should find a better system, starting with keeping their e-mail addresses off the www and out of the claws of the spambots. Prevention is always better than cure. In my case this has proved 100% effective and I receive e-mails from all my family and friends as well as this digest with no limitations on what the can write about.

I am without the touchscreen but still need to launch apps like Time, and the only way I know to do that is from the extras bar. I can't launch it from the System\Apps\TimeW directory.

Subject: Restoring my Macro 5 setup??

Help please.

I have had to transfer to a new 5mx due to hardware failure. I have copied my most recent backup onto the new machine, but when I start Macro 5 the panels do not find my old setup although the macro files are on the machine. How can I restore the old setup? Or do I have to re-allocate all my macros to the individual key presses?

Thanks.

Subject: GPRS & P910

I have a problem to download my email with the above combination. I got the email on the P910 working and am able to download my email from my Freeserve (Wannado) mailbox onto the phone. However, I am not succeeding in using the P910 as a modem for my mBook and download my email to the Psion with the P910 as modem.

I contacted Vodaphone who could not help much and passed me on to Sony Ericsson support. After we went through a few settings and found out the correct number to dial is *99***1# I got a connection between the phone and the Psion and can see that the phone is connected to the internet. However, the Psion gets stuck on "Connecting to mailbox" and than gives a "time out" error message. With the T610 it worked flawlessly and I have no idea where the difference is. Can anyone help ?
