Thanks Itamar, Alan and Nicholas on the backup situation.  I understand it now.  Its not a big deal, you don't do anything except let it happen, but it just ties everything up for a while.  I appreciate it.

As far as smart phones go, like Itamar, it would be nice to see these phones in the shops so that you could look at them and play with them.  As expensive as they are, it would be nice to shop around and make an informed decision before buying.  I am thinking about Palmtop again, but as I say, PDA Essentials, is also great and very detailed about the smart phones.  I am just trying to figure which is the best value for the price, as $500 to $700 is a lot of money for our toys.  They are fun though.
Thanks,

Can't open a program from an .ini file. From your System screen, Ctrl+Tab; that'll open an Explorer type window; click on the Disk box and select Z; scroll to System\Apps\TimeW; select TimeW.app and click Enter; you'll be back on the System screen with TimeW.app selected; click Enter and there you are.

Wait - there's an easier way if you have Macro5, Assistant, or some other macro energizer you can access from your keyboard.

I'm going to sit right down and write one right now.

I'm not sure if this is what you want - From the System screen Ctrl+S opens the control panel; I then Enter opens International; up arrow then 3 right arrows take you to currency; down arrows get you into each box; after changing to dollars, Esc closes Control Panel.

Forgive me if I'm telling you everything you know.

Itamar,

>>Well, I tried my best to copy the DATA files I had to my P910. I downloaded ConvertData.opo and one by one transfered all my contacts in the DATA files into the Contacts program on my mBook. I went over all of them and changed and corrected whatever needed to be corrected, over 250 contacts in total. I exported the Contacts in vcf format and emailed it to myself in order to download it on my P910 as I don't have pIBeam installed. I imported the file from the email program into the Contacts on the P910 ...and there were data missing. Upon checking more carefully the home city, home postcode and home country were missing in ALL the contacts.<<

Was it really missing, or just in the wrong place?

>>At this stage I started to get suspicious and returned to my mBook and decided to export the data from Contacts as a .csv file and to open it in Sheet (with nConvert) and have a closer look.<<

How did you get Contacts to export as csv? The only export option is as vcf (vCard).

>>What did I find ?  When exporting data from the contacts file to a .vcf or .csv file these 3 fields are NOT copied over. Period, just not copied. Is this an old and known bug or did I stumble on a specific problem on my mBook? So I tried to synchronise my Contact with Outlook and you know what ... the same thing again, these 3 fields are not copied over. I am at a loss why this happens and now I have to add these details one by one by hand, what a PAIN in the you know what.<<

I played around quite a bit when writing my vCard application (available from www.freepoc.org), so I have a bit of recent experience with the vagaries of vCard files. In fact, the country and postcode *are* exported correctly, but only in the field (ADR) containing the whole address; Lotus Notes does exactly the same (I've just tried it at work). This means that any program importing a vCard file has to be able to parse the address field correctly, to split it up into its constituent parts; the address field is split up using semi-colons, and the exact number of semi-colons at the various points within the address is what enables the address to be interpreted correctly when it is imported. I suspect that many programs have trouble doing this properly, which obviously leads to trouble, with data either going missing or ending up in the wrong place.

Cheers, Ian.

Thanks for the tip! Goes for rechargeables as well?
Some rechargeables say they shouldn't be fully drained, so what's "fully discharged"?

How should it? No recharging circuit, afaIk, is there? There were some diy people out there who added one.

Hi Folks,

Any pair of batteries in the 5mx with a total voltage below that of the power supply is bound to gain a small amount of charge while the machine is on the power supply if just through normal leakage.

But it is minor and, unless something else is wrong, will do no damage. The designers have allowed for it.

Also, in the 5mx I take to Sainsbury's (I bet they won't pay me for the plug) I use Energizer NiMH 2100 mAh rechargeable batteries and they seem to be fine. But in my 3c I use ordinary alkalines as they last *much* longer than rechargeables - and they are recharged in a Battery Manager Ultra I bought from the Innovations catalogue many years ago. I did read that some alkalines blow up in that charger but I've had no problems. I mostly use Duracells (that's four plugs I won't get paid for).

They seem to have a different usage of the year in product names to most other companies, including Microsoft(!) who started/popularised the whole silly practice of using years instead of simple version numbers.  e.g. Windows 98 is clearly an updated version of Windows 95, rather than a different product.

And I think that is the crux of the problem.  If they had called the new program "Handy Day PRO 2005", or even better gave it a different name entirely, then they would never have gotten into this problem.

> - It was only one application, now it is a PRODUCT LINE of two
> different applications

That's a pretty meaningless statement, since it says nothing more than what they said in the previous point.

> - told me rudely to leave the making of their policy about upgrades
> to them

Quite obviously it is THEY who should be far more careful about offering free upgrades, when they don't really mean it!  If I was them then I'd have given you the upgrade free, as a "good will gesture" (since "the customer is always right"), and then amended their web site (or even better the products name!) to make it clear that other people should not expect a free upgrade.

> - it is new because the application was designed and developed
> from the beginning. NO any functionality or any parts of source code
> of old Handy Day 2004 is transfered to Handy Day 2005.

The customer should not need to know that, so it is a spurious arguement.

> - Several new features

Wow, several new features over the previous version (sorry, "previous product";-) , like you might get in an upgraded version then?  If looks like an upgraded version of Handy Day 2004, I think it is entirely understandable for a customer to think Handy Day 2005 *is* an upgraded version.

Again, they should be far more careful about offering things for free, since they already know that people like things for free!

Itamar, I'm very sorry to hear how badly they treat their customers, and in particular how they treated you.  Certainly I wouldn't want to be their customer, if I have any choice in the matter!

Personally I would not reply to any message like that, because sooner or later spammers will try to trick you into verifying your email address by pretending to be one message like that.  IMHO, automated "white listing" is a dead-end solution.

IMHO, the only real solution to spam is to not give your address to spammers in the first place, to not reply to any spam, to disable showing of pictures in HTML emails (as this can be used to verify your address), and generally keep your wits about you because spammers can be quite clever.

Answer to: Bob

Re.: Psion Backups - As Julie said this happens twice a year with the change to/from summer/winter time. Of course it can also change if you play around with the date or time on your Psion as that is in the end what Psiwin checks when comparing the files on your Psion with the files on your PC. However, I quite often travel from the UK to the Continent or to Israel and always change the home time to give the correct settings for where I am and I never had a problem with backing up afterwards.

Answer to: Neville Smith

Re.: Time app - this is because Time.ini is not the program file. You need to do Ctrl-Tab in the system screen, find the TimeW folder where you will find the file TimeW.app. Double click on that file and Time will open (at least on my mBook)
As to the usefulness of new machines, it all depends what you need them for. I still have my mBook which I use for "serious" work (like sending out the digest <G>), but otherwise It is much easier to have a small PDA/phone with you for these numbers, diary, odd email and SMS, etc. The combination of the two is the solution for me.

Answer to: Alan R Morris

Re.: best devices - Maybe it is because these devices are only "the best" in the eyes of a limited public that does not warrant further development of these products ?

Answer to: Nicholas Bloch

Re.: Old digests - Get them from the website I suppose.

Answer to: Keith Giles

Re.: Color Icons - Now that is strange. My Merlin icon clearly has a blue hat with yellow moon and star on it. I have no idea whether it came like that or was added later though. Suggest you search again in the zip files of the colour icons.

Nicholas,

One of the main reasons I chose Sandisk (appart from it being one of the fastest cards at teh time) was their known reliability with Psions.  Psion's are particularly insistant on the CF interfacs and if the card has not been implemented strictly accorging to the CF standard, then there can be some obscure problems - I know I have been there!

Personally, I would take the risk, I think the Ultra is 60x write speed where the Extreme is 133x write speed - more that twice the speed!

When I upgrade again to a 2GB card (I am sure I won't be able to resist for ever!) I will be looking at the Extreme III (or the IV!).

As I said at the time, the speed increase on my Psion was about 60% over the standard SanDisk 512MB card.

I had a closer look at Tracker as well as Active Desk. Both programs look very interesting with loads of possibillities but in the end _for me_ do not compare to Handy Day. I particularly like the white background giving me a clear reading of the data, the uncluttered screen without all the icons and other choices. i also like that the tasks are not just numbered but you actually read the first line of the Task. However, in the other screens you also have most of the other choices Tracker and Active Desk give you, as well as some functions S-man does (like closing of programs).

Aas I don't really need the improvements of Handay Day 2005 and after my quarrel with them anyhow will not buy from them again I think I will just stick with their 2004 program. It fulfills all my needs and requirements at the moment, so what is bad ?

I agree that bouncing spam is rather pointless but Mailwasher allows me to press one button 'process mail' and sort the spam from the genuine, I like it but I do understand what you mean.

I think Toshiba were nuts to stop making the Libretto, i.e. a genuine fully blown windows pc the size of a video cassette. Who'd have believed that there are classic machines out there that will be cherished long after their time, much like the Psion range.

The only thing that has slightly altered my thinking for future machines is that i can comfortably touch type on my p800's bluetooth folding keyboard, yet cannot on the Libretto or the future communicators as they would be too small.

Hi Chris,

But in Leipzig/Germany there is a firm, installing a charger in the S5 and 5mx (www.elektronikstore.de/psionstore/psion-service.htm - in German). Since I have such a changed machine with rechargeable batteries, I had no more problems with power.
