Subject: Re. Copying Contacts

Itamar,

>>Re.: Copying Contacts - Missing !  I exported one contact only to a xxx.csv file and opened it with Sheet. The fields are NOT there at all. Do it yourself, export one contact, call the file xxx.csv and open it in sheet, excel or another program that reads  csv files.  Would be interesting to hear the results. With me the fields "home town", "home postcode" and "home country" did not export. You export as .csv file by changing the extension of the file name from xxx.vcf to xxx.cvs, simple. <<

I tried this, and you are nearly right; when the .csv file is converted by nConvert and opened in Sheet, the address information is incomplete.

However, if you open the same .csv file with HexEditor or Editor, the address information *is* complete. I think that the problem occurs because the length of the address line in the exported file is longer than 255 characters, and then either nConvert of Sheet has trouble handling this; in my case, my address was truncated at the end of the street name, with house number, town, post code and country all missing:

BEGIN:VCARD
...
N;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL0=Last name;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL1=First name;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL2=Middle name;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL3=Title;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL4=Suffix:chapple;ian & aida;;;
ADR;HOME;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL0=Home PO box;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL1=Home ext address;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL2=Home address;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL3=Home city;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL4=Home region;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL5=Home p'code;X-EPOCCNTMODELLABEL6=Home country:;;boswinde <== address truncated here!!
...
END:VCARD

This problem of Contacts producing .vcf files with very long lines is one that I came across while writing vCard, and is actually quite hard to deal with. The main cause of long lines is the (relatively useless) label information, which is (probably) ignored by other contact applications when importing Contacts produced .vcf files. Unfortunately, the item of contact information most affected by this problem is the address, due to the number and length of the labels associated with it...

Cheers, Ian.

Does a soft reset help? Have you tried formatting on a PC using a card reader? Just be sure not to form as NTFS.

Re Merlin color icons. When I got my Mbook I stupidly forgot to check to see if Neuon had special color versions for Merlin. Thanks to those who informed me of this. I now have *all* my Extras in color.

It's quite possible that the Hotmail server has branded the digest as Spam.
Or, possibly the server itself is branded as a spam-relay.
I suggest that all hotmail users should go into the settings and add the digest to their whitelists.

I'll let you in on a secret...
The P910 also uses serial...
Yes, I know the base is connected to the PC with an USB cable, but...
Look a little closer and you'll soon see that in the device manager on your PC it's registered as a serial port.
(The base is just an USB-serial adapter )

the "internet" part of the init string you've listed is the APN
(It stands for APplication Name or something like that, and yes, 'internet' is considered 'just an application' :-)
Which applications is available depends on your phone company.

As long as you have the GPRS enabled update on the mBook, that string is probably not too far from the answer.
On my Siemens M50, I use AT&F as Init(reset) string, and AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet" as Data init string.
Note that the 'internet' part is usually case sensitive, and the 'IP' part may be, too.
The nr. 1 may be changed for another number if you don't want to risk overwriting the preprogrammed WAP or other settings on the phone, but most phones only have 2 slots.(some have up to 6 slots)

The dialup number should look something like this: *99***1#
the *99*** part is a prefix to tell the phone that you want to use GPRS, and the 1# tells it that you want to use the settings in slot 1.
(If you used another number in the init string, this part must be changed, also)

I'd help you more, except...
I don't have a P910, and have only helped install the software for the P800 and P900 phones on other people's PCs....

Just like our favourite Psions!  Unfortunately it happens in all walks of life.  Cars, washing machines, ham radios, GPSrs .............

Yesterday, M&S, a major UK high street store, was in the news again as it has been many times over the last few years.  Sales are down again.

The reason given is that they don't listen to their customers.  I was one of their customers for many years, in fact since I was a small boy.  At one time, apart from shoes, I was fully clothed my M&S.  But when they removed from sale the style of goods I purchased, they stopped me from buying from their stores.  Unfortunately for M&S I am not in a group of the 'limited public'.

The difference between M$ and Psion, is that M$ were, and still are, an exceptionally good marketer of their exceptionally poor products.  On the other hand Psion were, and are no longer, the market leader in portable computing of the best possible products.  But their marketing was as bad as M$ products.

Their 'limited public', was of their own making.

I used the current version as I had to download it to free-up this Psion.

I did not know that bouncing was to be avoided Jack.  But thinking about it, much will not be bounced back to the originator, but to the hijacked address, hence doubling that amount of spam and clogging the servers.

Thanks for your comments Jack.

I wonder if they are about to be bought by M$ !

While on holiday, I saw AutoRoute 2005 and bought a copy.  I expected a few improvements, including the ability to connect with the newer GPSrs.  These, like new laptops, don't have serial ports only having USB.

But no new features have been found.  Earlier in the day (of reading Chris's post) I had read a review of AR05 in CTO, the top UK computer trade journal.

I read, "it's frustrating to write a review of AR05 .... because so little has changed .... however shallow the update it's bound to sell by the bucketload."

It's sad that folk like Itamar, Chris and me expect an upgrade that is more than just a reprint of the box and a new splash screen,  but don't get what we pay for.

It's not surprising that so many now copy software, which poses the question, 'Who is the pirate, the manufacturer or the customer?"

I did some reading then made an experiment: I recharged four alkali primary AA batteries in a Varta slow (overnight) charger. After the 14 hr cycle the charger times for rechargeables, they were at 1,4 V from 1,19 V; they didn't get hotter than rechargeables. I'll see how long they last in the camera. (wasn't last that long when they were new...). Btw, how strong would an explosion be? Would it blow out the wall, the socket, or just the seams of the cell? Would it fill the house with toxic stuff?

The past day or so I've been attempting to delete an email contacts SMS detail from my 5mx email file.

What I would like to do is delete the SMS file. My C drive backup (on D) also contains the file.

As I will never need the capability to use IR with any mobile phone, how can the particular file be purged?

Subject: Itamar's Contact Problems

Hi Itamar,

I remember that Contacts on the early German netBook had some problems that were only solved in a later version of the operating system. I don't know exacly what the bug was but it could have had to do with the export function. The real pitty: You had to delete and recreate the Contacts file to resolve the issue! Even with the updated software the old Contacts file did have the problem :-(

You can at least try the following:

- Exit Contacts and rename \System\Data\Contacts.cdb to a different name.
- Restart Contacts; It will come up without data.
- Create a dummy record with all the required fields; you can put the field label in each of the fields to aid in identifying what's exported and what is not.
- Check the contents of the vcf-file (renaming it to .csv makes it readable to Sheet but is far from *converting* it to a csv file; I use Symbian Editor to read vcf files.)

If the export now works (import it into your phone if you want to be sure) you can again use
DataContacts to fill the fresh Contacts file from your Database(s).

This is my annual question to the Digest: my niece gave me her "old" Nokia 3310 and I would like to connect the phone to my 5mx and use Phoneman to access the 3310's settings. I have the Nokia cable, it has a special Nokia connector on one end and a nine holes plug on the other. Is there one of you who know how can I connect my 5mx to the phone?

Re.: ailing 5mx more useful tool - Don't we all agree here ?  However, I feel that there is another side to this. Slowly but surely the EPOC machines will be yesterday's technology and will stop functioning in combination with other machines around us. For example bluetooth and Wifi. It cannot connect via an USB connection (needing adaptors) and how much longer will Psiwin keep up with the new OS systems ?  Screens get better and compatibillity might one day become problematic as well as the world around us progresses. By all means continue using the machine you like best but prepare yourself for "the day after".

Re. don't forget to back up - And don't forget to back up your new smartphone again and again and again .... ! I back up my Psion twice a week (just finishing almost 4 hours of backing up with D disk due to change to wintertime ...) and my smartphone every 3 days (I get an automatic reminder on the PC at work).

Answer to:  Tom Robertson

Re. Screen fading - If this happens whenever you switch the S7 on I think it is quite usual to take a little time to brighten up, my mBok does the same. If it is intermittantly during usage you might have a problem.

Re. MetroMap into TubeRoute - There is a free program called Metro by two guys http://nanika.net/Metro which runs on PalmOS, PocketPC, MS Smartphone and SE P800/900/910. Maybe they are also prepared to allow you to use their data ?  They have details for towns all over the world.

Finally someone else giving opinions and ideas about this phone. Please continue the good work ! <BG>

- Back-ups : It is indeed a problem that the back-up file appears to be one large file. There is howver no need for renaming it and looking at it "by hand". Go to http://utenti.lycos.it/afsoftware/bi and download the "Backup Inspector". It will open any of the back-up files and give you a complete break-down of all files and will allow you to extract any number of files from 1 upwards back to your PC from where you can copy it back to your phone. Just a pitty it will not extract it directly to the phone.
- Screen(click) : I don't mind the click that much, I like to know that I got a reaction to my pressing the screen. I get irritated that the backlight switches off so quickly and that you cannot set it to stay on continuously when in a certain mode. It differentiates between "handheld" and "car" but not between "flap open" and "flap closed" which is what I need.  I would like the light to be on when the flap is open, and on auto when the flap is closed.
- Data input : Just write on areas where there is no possible data input. I try to write on the left of the screen (left handed) where the labels are. Yes, sometimes it goes wrong, but sometimes I make typing errors on my mBook as well and sometimes you make a mistake on a Palm too. I got the hang of it more or less, find certain letters difficult like the "k". The "." is just a matter of getting used to. Anyhow, thanks, due to your message I finally found out how to copy and paste !  The scroll icon is a problem, I don't think you can do anything about it.   To change fields I use the scroll function, faster than with the pen in general. The capital "i" I just use the letter "l" as it shows up the same anyhow. And you know what, I wrote all my contacts in Israel that way and just now did a search on "israel" with small letters .... they all showed up !
- Application/Task control: Again I agree with you. However, this is a phone/PDA combination that has different rules to a PDA only. The program does not close, but the file being used does close. I did not yet get around to using Quickword so can't say much about it. Also, it is not possible to save WORD files in different folders. However, within Quickword you can use different folders to store different documents and creat "Work", "Private", "Car", "Photography", etc. etc.
- Holding it : I can't succeed holding it and typing with two thumbs, maybe my thumbs are too big ? <G>. I just prefer to hold the phone in my right hand and quickly type with my left. The phone is more stable and therefore I gain in speed. The space bar is a problem, agree.

In general, you tried more programs than me so keep up the good work and let us know how you proceed.

Meanwhile I bought the car holder from Expansys which is a  major advance to the third party one I first bought. I used a paperclip and some other device to hang it onto the ventilator opening as I do not want to use screws yet in the car.
- Stabillity : I yet have to get a crash, so probably I did not work it hard enough ? <G>

Anyone with more or other ideas what to try ?  I do need GPRS with my mBook for work when traveling and it would be a "P i/t A" to take two phones and change SIM card all the time.

Subject: Itamars GPRS Problems

Hi Itamar,

one question I have about your GPRS problems. I remember you used to use your old Ericsson phone with your Netbook. Why change your settings from your last phone if everything worked okay?

There used to be a chap called Mike McConnell about who knew how to connect anything Psion to anything, perhaps someone from the digest could give you contact details, or perhaps a Google search would find him?.

You shouldn't be entering 'Internet' apn anywhere on your netbook in my opinion, your internet GPRS connection should be set on your p910, you just need to be able to tell your Netbook to use that.

I'll have a look on my Libretto and get back to you, I suppose I could dust off my Revo+ in the name of research...

To the digesteer who didn't realise you had to pull the connectors on a p series phone at 45 degrees before extraction, ME TOO!!!, I've never had a Sony Ericsson phone before and only found the correct way by accident, I'm surprised I didn't break the thing.

It does actually state the correct procedure in the front of the manual but I missed it.

Best Wishes,
Mike Dyer.
