Subject: Batteries (again)

Hi Folks,

Alan Morris is right in that the older method of recharging batteries probably wouldn't work on most modern batteries. Equally most modern rechargeables can acquire charge without a charger if the voltage across them is a bit higher than their base voltage (as can most batteries).

I have (and use) a 3c exclusively on batteries. The NiMH rechargeables I use in the 5mx discharge in the 3c faster than reasonable, *much faster*. So I use Duracell alkalines in the 3c and they are charged in a purpose-designed charger. But I use the rechargeables in the 5mx as that uses alkalines very quickly by comparison.

But I was told that charging "non-rechargeables" can be dangerous if the batteries charged release a combustible gas while charging and that some such chargers had been ruined as a result of that gas igniting/exploding. In consequence I now only use Duracells apart from pukkah rechargeables.

Happy days,
Phil.

I've written something that some folks might find useful.  I'm sure I need to update it, but you might find some of it useful.

Subject: Re. Copying Contacts

Answer to: Itamar

>>Re.: Copying Contacts - Very interesting indeed. I did what you asked and created a completely new contacts file. You know what ?  There is only one field for the address on the mBook and not separate fields for Home address, Home city, Home p'code and Home country and that is probably where the problem lies. I copied the file from my 5MX where it might be different, I don't know anymore. Any infor anyone froma 5MX ?<<

I think you've actually answered your own question here, and possibly confirmed the suspicions I expressed to you by PM. The mbook appears to be able to handle a Contacts database created on a different Epoc 5 machine (ie. 5mx, Series 7 etc.) and can display the data correctly, because the Contacts database probably contains the field labels (ie. Country, Postcode etc.) which are used when displaying contacts. However, and this is probably the crucial bit, for some reason the Contacts program on the mbook is configured to not export these items, even when they have been displayed correctly. Why that should be the case is beyond me...

Another possibility is that you may need to set up the labels correctly; Tools > Set up Labels (Ctrl+L). I don't know how this affects how contacts are exported, but it certainly affects both which fields are displayed and in what order, so it might be worth looking at.

Cheers, Ian.

Re.: Internet Access on Psion 5mx - You don't write which network you use on the phones which would determine the exact settings. As a start I suggest you look at Mike McConnell's website 's http://www.mikemcc.org.uk where you will find a wealth of information on this subject (why invent the wheel if it has been invented already). If afterwards you have more specific questions by all means ask again.

>>>...Mobile Connectivity Update - AFAIK the 5MX does not need the Mobile Connectivity upgrade at all and you should really delete it (unless others write differently in the digest). It wa smeant for the S5 to fix some problems. I don't have it on my mBook either.<<<<

Subject: Launching EpocWord to no avail

Hello all.

I cannot launch Word anymore on my 5mx, may it be from the toolbar or while clicking on any Word file. Instead, I get the foll message:

- application: Word
- "justifying" code: KERN-EXEC
- "justifying" number: 3

"justifying" being my own translation of "justificatif" in French.

I have done "Restart", then hard reset (pressing on small hole close to backup battery): nothing changed...

Any ideas as how to solve this, please ?

Best regards.

Subject: Which S7 machines can support a WiFi card?

Ian Chapple asked:

<Does anyone know of a sure-fire way to determine if a Series 7 motherboard is capable of supplying enough current to the PC-Card slot? >

Since writing this Ian said he now has his card working on his S7.  So, I'd like to ask the same question on the Digest as Ian asked above.  If I remember the later S7 machines had a revised motherboard that could supply a higher current to drive some WiFi cards.  I doubt if mine is one of these as I bought it in March 2000 which makes it one of the early machines but I live in hope :-)

Kevin Thorne
