Subject: PsiWin - XP - Belkin USB
After spending many hours trying to get my Belkin F5U103 to
work over almost 2 years, I've just had a final try before consigning the Belkin to the dustbin.
I've changed almost all possible options and have found
that 9600 on the nB is the fastest speed possible. It's however useless
with PsiWin as a backup would take 3669 minutes and 10 seconds, or over 2? days!
CopyAnywhere is therefore the only practical use.
Anyone else had similar experiences. Or any suggestions.

I'd also be interested in learning whether my Series 7,
produced the 15th week of 2000, could support a wireless card if I
purchased and installed a Netbook personality module. The software in my Series 7 is 'Version 1.05(254), - ASCII (Build 754)'.
Kevin, I've yet to hear of a 7book (Series 7 with Netbook
personality module) that hasn't had success at using a low-power Buffalo
WiFi card*, but on the other hand, there are also reports that earlier
Series 7 machines just don't have the juice to drive such cards. It would
be nice if there were some sort of reliable rule-of-thumb to go by before spending in excess of EUR 100 for such an upgrade.
The Netbook personality module is tempting in any case, due
to the boost in speed and available memory.

* Here's something I found posted somewhere on the Internet:
|I recently took the risk of buying a Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP
|10 mbps WLAN card for my 7book. Wasn't sure if it would
|be able to power it (crashed frequently when trying to use
two CF cards |at the same time). It works very well, even when also
powering a 256M |24x speed compactflash :-

his S7. So, I'd like to ask the same question on the Digest as Ian asked above. If I remember the later S7 machines had a revised motherboard that could supply a higher current to drive some WiFi cards. I doubt if mine is
one of these as I bought it in March 2000 which makes it one of the early machines but I live in hope :-) >

Alan,
thanks for the explanation. I'm experimenting on w.
recharging alkaline (whatever that means) primary AAs - because I find rechargeables a bit expensive and because I occasionally have to buy non-rechargeables anyway.
So far nothing bad has happened... but what _could_ happen
with a slow recharger? Does anyone know?
best,

Subject: Internet Access via mobile
Hi,
Many thanks for the help proferred!
I visited the recommended sites and have installed Opera
5.14 and input all the settings required for Ecosse Net but just can't get
the necessary connection. Am I right in assuming that that my PSion 5mx
will talk to my mobile phone and make the necessary dial-up? My mobile confirms that infrared is active and my PSion 5mx is set to Infrared so I
am at a loss to know what to do next. The error message I get is: "No connection information found. Check location and modem data has been set"
If I ring the Ecosse number I get what I would describe as
the sort of fax/data sound you get when you ring a fax no by mistake
instead of the normal number so I guess it's not the ISP.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what I have overlooked?
Thanks!
Larch

Yes, the 9210 and 9290, etc. work fine with MMC cards
larger than 128MB. Mine is currently using a 512MB (stuffed with apps, huge
TR files, MP3 and NIM videos 8-)) ) ____________________________________________________________________

Subject: What is my machine? Can I WiFi?

Subject: P910 Comments, Backup Inspector and must have
freeware progs.
Hi Itamar,
Thank you too for your comments on my comments! I too would
love to hear similar ramblings from others. Since I wrote that, I have
played around a little with the internet, WAP and email but can't really comment too much yet - having said that, this email was sent from my P910!
I had heard about backup inspector before but the website -
http://utenti.lycos.it/afsoftware/bi - was dead. Anyway, I did a google
search and found it at the new address -
http://afsoftware.s5.com/bi/index_eng.htm instead. I find the program very usefull if you just extract everything from the backup archive file. If I attempt to do a selective extraction, Backup Inspector hangs - using up
100% of CPU in the process. Having said that, I still think I'll use it.
Some more details on the 3rd party programs I am using (all
freeware):
- JABP - Freeware personal finance available from
http://www.freepoc.de/software.php
I used this extensively on my 5mx and was delighted to
see this available for my P910. Obviously with a screen this small, it is
not as usable, but hey, it's free and it's very good!
- SMAN - Freeware Task Manager from
http://renegade.w3xs.com/droll.htm This has lots of interesting bits and pieces. I find myself using it's filemanager a lot.
- LoPan - Shanghai - Freeware tile program from
http://my-symbian.com/uiq/applications/applications.php?fldAuto=28&faq=3
Must have!
Now come on all you UIQ people ...
All the best

Subject: SIBO BusyView
Psience5, Martin Guthrie's site now hosts some EPOC
programs contributed to the public domain by the family of the late Lieuwe
de Vries. I'm wondering if anyone who has been in touch with Lieuwe's
family has or would be willing to ask for a similar release of Lieuwe's
SIBO programs, such as the original (and truly brilliant given the intricacies of Psion's SIBO Agenda) BusyView v. 142? There are still
many users of the early Psions. I returned to my Series 3c a year ago after
my ER3 & 5 Psions stopped working and found that I could not register
BusyView for Lieuwe had passed away. Thank you in advance for anyone of
our digesters who pursues this kindness. /Stephen Stone

Hi all,
if anyone is using the excellent jRC4 freeware file
encryption program for UIQ from www.freepoc.org (like I am), the author has kindly updated the program to work with the latest version of the Java
Virtual Machine.

Connectivity Update,
Answer to: Ian Chapple
Re.: Copying Contacts final confirmation - I repeated the
exercise and created a new contacts file. I did Ctrl-L and indeed the
fields "home city" etc. do not appear anymore. It appears that the Contacts program on the mBook has been curtailed to contain less fields. When you transfer a Contacts file form a 5MX or S7 (I suppose) the fields do show in
the database, but as the program does not know about them they are not exported.

Subject: Launching EpocWord to no avail,
Answer to: St?phane Sage
Re.: Launching EpocWord to no avail - You wrote you pressed
on the small hole next to the battery. That activates a _soft_ reset which does not delete any files, the same as a "restart" with the program
Restart. If you want to do a real _hard_ reset, you have to hold both shift keys down when switching the Psion on again. However, BEWARE, all your DATA will be LOST and make sure you do have a proper back-up. Before doing
this however, first try and delete the WORD.ini file from \Systems\App\Word
as that might solve your problem as well.
