Has anyone done this successfully?

I tried configuring automatically by having the 2 SMS sent to my mobile by
www.sonyericsson.com but when I click Send and receive, I get the message
Server not found.

Hi Giorgio,

> There was a problem backing up the file  D:\system\Temp\TMP88ECD.$$$

I normaly don't back up temporary files, so I would delete it before
backup. This would surely cure your problem.

If you want to keep it, first check the file lenght (file properties (first
menu, 6th command from above)). If zero, then I would probably delete it.
If you still want to keep it, then try to rename it from *.$$$ to *.SSS or
something else before backup.
If you want to keep it unrenamed, try to stuff it in a ZIP-file.

Answer to: Keith Giles

Re.: RoutePlanner Overlays - Once you created an overlay file the correct
way you have to activate it in the menu of Routeplanner under "Open
overlay". I used Makeover numerous times for a file with speedcameras (to
be added to Pscience shortly) and never had a problem. What was the source
of your data and was it entered correctly and in the right format ?

Answer to: Arabbitte

Re.: Flip Off !!! - I thought you told us to f... off .... <BG>. I never
even tried to take my flip off the phone. I like it very much to have
normal phone controls when just making a phone call and also use the
thumboard on the other side quite a lot as well.

Re.: EPOC Data files - This answer will probably appear numerous times from
different people. Do Export file and choose Ctrl+O for options where you
can decide what separator to use.

Now you've got me pacing up and down the room waiting for your experieces
of this machine on the Digest!  I noticed today that Expansys have currently
got 210 of these in stock and they say at the top of the info that if you
order this product before 4pm then you can have it delivered by Special
Delivery before 1pm the next working day.  I have never ordered anything
from Expansys before but I have heard of some other unscrupulous dealers
saying they have this in stock where in reality they don't - they just want
to get hold of your order then keep you waiting!  I'm sure Expansys don't
do this but just out of interest, how long have you been waiting for your
wonderful new machine to arrive?

Keith is this the Palmtop DOS program or the Psion App?

From the App help file:-

Deg-Min-Decimal Format

Deg.Min.Decimal longitude and latitude co-ordinates.

The deg.min.decimal format should have degrees, minutes and decimal minutes
separated by decimal points (as specified in the international settings);
the decimal minutes part can be to any precision, but will always be output
to three places.

eg.
-003.38.598,057.06.981,"Cairn Gorm (1245m)"
003.38.598W,057.06.981N,"Cairn Gorm (1245m)"
N057.06.981,W003.38.598,"Cairn Gorm (1245m)"

So it looks the same as yours Keith.  I've stopped using the DOS version as
the app is much more flexible.

Yes, I am doing that, but the program does not respond
to the 'tab' command as a label separator and keeps generating comma
separated files. (Excel does not recognise them as tab separated.) Though
puzzling, it is not a major problem because Excel can also open comma
delimited files.

Subject: Psion 5mx access to Internet

Hi, it's me again!
First I'd like ti offer my grateful thanks to all those who provided advice
and ensured that I now have access to the net. However, I need help again!
I find that I get disconnected every time approximately 8 minutes after
connecting. This happens even in the middle of navigating between pages so
it can't be because of being idle. That setting is set for 30 mins anyway.
I have searched for an event set to cease or kick in say 10 after
connection but no luck. Even the backlight is set to go off after 40mins so
it's not that. I don't seem to have any problems with IR. I have installed
plbeam although I haven't used it as the sole transfer program because I
was concerned that it might not be possible to revert to the Psion version.
There have been no instances of screen freezes either and reducing the baud
rate has not made any difference.
Grateful if you experts can shed any light on what the problem might be?
Thanks
Larch

Answer to: Giorgio

Re.: Problem backingup - Yes, delete the file. It is a temporary file you
don't need. If you can't, do Ctrl-P and untick the "Read-only" setting.

Answer to: Daniel Kerr

Re.: psion 5mx - Welcome to the digest and the world of 5MX. I suppose
there is a lot you should know but it is very hard to give you a guide from
beginning 'till end. I suggest you play around with the machine and come
back with specific questions which the digest members will be most happy to
answer. In general, your 5MX is a true multi-task PDA running many
applications at the same time within the memory size restraint, and can
open files in any folder you like. You can arrange all home files in a
folder called "Home" and all work files in a folder called "Work" for example.

Answer to: Franco Cozzani

Re.: Nokia 7710 - First of all I don't like to have a phone without "phone
controls". My colleague at work got an iMate. It is a very nice and capable
machine but for every phonecall he has to take out the little pen, go
through several menus before making the call.   The screen is undoubtedly
of high quality which will help when browsing the net or reading files.
But, like my P910, serious work is not possible without a keyboard (BT or
IR) which I find a big disadvantage (and keeping my mBook for that reason
amongst others). You will not easily get a shortage of memory with 90 Mb
RAM, but beware, it supports only up to 512 Mb MMC cards so if you were
looking to store several films or loads of music on it this might be a
disadavantage.   I wanted a phone that is also a PDA besides my mBook and
as such this would not be the right one for me. However, for you it could
well be.

Subject: Email on the P910

One of the great functions on the EPOC mailprogram is that you can see the
remote mailbox an decide what to download, what to leave for later and what
to delete without downloading at all.  I used my P910 for email and while
it has got the possibillity to limit the size of the emails to be
downloaded (downloading headers only for those larger than the entered
size) you can not decide yourself what and what not to download.

Is there a third party email program for this phone that will do that just
like the EPOC mailprogram ?

Subject: MC218 backup

Hi Folks,

Giorgio got the message "There was a problem backing up the
file  D:\system\Temp\TMP88ECD.$$$ . . . because there is a problem with the
PC to Psion connection."

The file in question is a temporary file. Just close any application that
might be using it, delete it and go again. Any file in a "temp" directory
is probably a temporary file and can usually be safely deleted,
particularly any such file called tmp(whatever) or temp(whatever).

The particular file in question may be open (or may be corrupt, appearing
open) and the backup process can't close it. If it can't be closed reset
the MC218, delete it and then backup. If there's still a problem Atelier's
EDU, CheckDisk, is probably needed as you've probably got a cross-linked
file or a lost cluster or something similar. Most such problems can be
solved by EDU, though I imagine PC-based disk utilities can do the same.

Happy days,
Phil.

I have a much cheaper alternative:  Take the Netbook personality module out
of your faulty Netbook, and and install it in your working Series 7! (costs
about ?0 ;)

Make sure you know what you are doing, before you do it, or you could
fatally damage both Psions, AND loose all your data!  Here are a few *hints*:

  - Backup both Psions.  Using PsiWin should be fine, although my free
FastBackup program isn't a bad alternative if you have some space on a
Compact Flash (but read it's Help file before using it).

  - Make sure you have a copy of the OS.IMG file at the root of a Compact
Flash disk, as your "Netbook" will need it.

  - Remove all power sources before removing or installing the
module.  This includes external power, the battery and the backup battery.

  - Take anti-static precautions, as is standard for handling any
electronic equipment.  While you *might* get away with just touching an
electrically earthed/grounded tap or radiator, I would recommend using an
anti-static wrist strap (such as Maplin sell).

Sounds very much like his Netbook's screen cable connector is close to
permanently failing.  If it was within Psion's warrenty period, then they
would fix it for free, otherwise they will charge over ?100 to repair it.

There have been many discussions about these problems on Psion Place, and
else where.

Dear Alan,

another week or so and then put it back on. At that point I will
re-evaluate ... >>

I think it's down to how people are using their P800 or P900. When they
use it mostly as a phone it makes sense not to remove the flip as you
lose the keypad. Use it mostly as a PDA, as I do, and the flip can be
more of a hindrance than a help. I doubt, however, the sense of
removing the flip from a P910 as you also lose the thumbboard.

Subject: Revo Battery problems

I received a Revo back from repair and it wouldn't run because the charge
was too feeble. So I put it in the cradle and was amazed to find on turn on
that it was charged at 88% - but continued to turn off when removed from an
external energy source.

I did a run of several hard restarts and the charge stayed the same until
suddenly it dropped to 33%. Trying to get it lower, I did another restart
and it jumped back to the mid sixties and stayed there until finally, it
dropped to zero after a dozen or so hard restarts. I put it in the cradle
and it was some time before it moved up from zero - this because there is,
I believe, a ten percent buffer, to prevent loss of data.

So perhaps the problem with our Revos is in getting the battery to show a
zero read-out at zero rather than a higher, false reading.

Would it be possible to write a programme that tells the read-out to revert
to zero?

Dear Will,

<< I've tried virtually all the mobile platforms and I have never found an
OS that offers such natural and intuitive input with such powerful
productivity values ... >>

I've also used a wide range of PDAs and handheld computers but don't think
that EPOC is necessarily the most intuitive. After all, the term
"Intuitive" means that the device works the way you expect it to
behave. That you don't have to think "What, in God's name, am I expected to
do next!?!?!". It's therefore not a neutral term as a Pen & Tablet device
(PalmOne, PocketPC) uses a quite different format than
the Psions. Meaning that a Palm Tungsten needs to behave differently -
needs to be 100% pen-centric in its behaviour. This makes it
effectively impossible to say that the EPOC operating system of a Psion
Series 5mx is more intuitive than the PalmOS operating system of a PalmOne
Tungsten T3.

Hiya Daniel,

Welcome to the world of the finest PDA available!

Your question is very open, however my best advice to the new Psion owner
is to invest in back issues of Palmtop Magazine (Tel: within the UK: 01869

sold).

Next - check out http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/ then http://www.freepoc.org/ .
