Hi all,
I asked this question a week ago but I recieved no answer, so I try once more:
I would like to use Phoneman with a Nokia 3310. I already have the data
cable and this works fine with my PC; but with Phoneman a always have a
message "Temporisation".
How can I use this cable with my 5mx
- do I need a null-modem or something else?
Thanks for your help,

About Sony Clie (answer to Mike Dyer);

I would guess it is up to Mr Engelsman & editors to steer the content of
the Digest, but I would suggest to stick to an "enlarged Epoc-focus"
approach. This means:
* subjects strictly related to Epoc machines, e.g. my cracking 5 MX
does not sync when it is Friday, and/or
* views and experiences on PDAs and smartphones running (by force)
other OSs but always with the eyes of Epoc people in need to change
platform or wishing to add one or more handhelds to their still running
Epoc devices.

About Mr Engelsman's reply to my query about the forthcoming Nokia 7710:

Thank you for your quick feedback. I see your point and - insofar shopping
for a sophisticated smartphone goes - I do agree with you that a "phone"
without phone controls is puzzling at best.

But I was wondering about a 7710 + keyboard as a possible replacement for
my aging MC218/5Mx. More as an advanced PDA therefore. What about the file
structure in the nokia series 90 platform? Any preview on the built-
applications?

I am in general a bit confused about how much Symbian smartphones are akin
- or different - from Epoc machines like  the 5mx & co.
I might think the series 60 platform is perhaps dumbed down since it runs
on rather small phones like the announced Nokia 3230. And nothing wrong
with that.
But what about UIQ 2.1 which runs on the larger SE P910, the Nokia series
80 which runs on the Nokia 9300 and 9500, the series 90 which will run on
the Nokia 7710?
Are these Symbian OS interfaces more sophisticated than Palm 5.2 or 5.4 Garnet?
Does an Epoc person get a better experience with a SE P910 than with a Treo
650 (to arrive soon) or a Tungsten 5 (no phone capability for this one, so
this is a two device proposition of course)?

We can read about these devices on various web sites, but I think one big
value of the Digest is precisely that of seeing these machines thru the
(tearful) eyes of Epoc users.

Subject: RE: GPRS IR Phone connection

Dear Don:

Good to hear from you.

my T610 died last week and I need to replace it. Up to last week I was
emailing w/o a problem. I was using my corporate pop3 acct, sending the
digest, and an earthlink accts. I used the myemail.t-mobile.com SMTP server
w/o a problem using GPRS. I assume that you are using this server.

If you already have done this, what will do the trick is registering your
email accts with tmobile. Go to their website, log in, go to communications
and register one by one your email accts (you will have to provide pop
server, passwords, etc). Do not tell the thing to let you know when mail
arrives, otherwise you will be inundated with sms messages. This will tell
tmobile servers that the messages with the return address you are trying to
send are "kosher", or from a registered user. Once you do that, I found out
you can send emails even when roaming.

Hope this helps, if you have questions feel free to give me a call.

Regards

Hello Manuel

It's been a while, Hope things are well
I have a question (dilemma) - That I hope you can answer.
Since we met I've upgraded to a GPRS IR phone (T610)everything works fine
except my old ISP worldnet account
I can send and receive on my old GSM settings
But
I can only send - and NOT RECEIVE on our new GPRS settings
What do I need to do to make this receive?

Regards Donald

PS I'm sending this from the account I would like to have working on my
Psion. (works fine on PC, so I will get your message)

Thanks

Subject: Vibrating alert

Hello all

Thanks to all those who responded to my Symbian clear out  message a few
days ago.
Sorry to those who lost out.

I am disappointed to have seen a couple of digesters already writing off
the new Nokia 9500 solely because it either does not include predictive
text, or vibration alert.

Well for those of you that need alert by vibration for noisy environments
there are quite a few passive and bluetooth adapters that would solve this
issue.
As for predictive text my girlfriend is rapid to say the least with her
3310, but I can text and spell check must faster on my 9500 in  open  mode
than she can. I can send to multiple No's  and with messages of 500 or 600
characters can read, forward print , much much easier.

Slightly off topic I have just bought the new Tom-tom Go GPS  car
navigation system, as Tom-tom seems to have forgotten Psion/Symbian.  It is
a quite stunning piece of kit, every street in England down to house No on
a 100 Meg SD card,  Voice commands get on your nerves but you can change
language to improve your linguistic skills.

So I now have a Garmin Emap, complete with 32Mb data card, UK  Maps on
CD,  car mount for sale, PC link,  please email me if interested.

Best wishes

Ashley

Route Planner (Enroute) uses 4 decimal places.  Street Planner uses 5
decimal places, because it goes to a larger scale and therefore needs to be
more accurate.  But this makes the .OVR file longer.  I've been programming
my own app that does similar to MakeOver and used my own (unfinished) app
before Richard Gee's app became available, so I'm familiar with the binary
file format of .OVL files.  Next to be investigated will be the .OV2 files
that Tom Tom now use.

The versions of RP & SP that I use (I've bought probably the last
available, but not found time to install them) accept 5dp, so I now use
that for all.

A .ovr will be smaller than a .txt file especially if comment lines are
used.  If converting someone else's file it may contain record types not
used by the app.  Palmtop specified a number of record types, but never
enhanced their mapping software to use them, a real disappointment for
me.  My app used some of them.

I've just converted RouteOvl\Germany\TANKPLZ3.OVR which is 13K to a text
file and that is 18K.  It contains 260 records like:-

N052.24.024,E009.42.780,"Shell, Schulenburger Landstr., 142, 30165 Hannover"
N052.23.508,E009.42.612,"Shell, Herrenh?user Kirchweg, 38, 30167 Hannover"

The others may have wrong locations, so if you zoom out, you might be able
to see them.  Or try and delete one and see how many are available to
delete.  The icon file may have a different name such as O in place of 0,
or capital I (item) which looks like lower case l (lima)

But command line utilities are much better and quicker to use in unix &
dos, compared to wintel.

For a number of conversions ovl/txt it is much quicker to use dos than the
app, but a 5mx is more portable etc!

But Keith, that's best as folk will assume and give a wrong answer or have
to ask for more info.

Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re.: Message Storer - Thanks for the answer. What is Message Storer ?

Answer to: Keith Giles

Re.: RoutePlanner Overlays - Did you look in the Help file of Makeover ? I
read there the following :

There are two types of record, one accurate to 10,000th of a degree (4dp)
written by Route Planner, and one accurate to 100,000th of a degree (5dp)
written by Street Planner.

and further the correct format for the data is :

-3.64330,57.11635,"Cairn Gorm (1245m)"        or
3.64330W,57.11645N,"Cairn Gorm (1245m)"    or
N57.11645,W3.64330,"Cairn Gorm (1245m)"

It is a long time ago I last used the program, but in the format of the
file try to use only "Decimal".    The MBM file you have to create yourself
and it must be exactly the same name ias the overlay file. I have a file
Speedcam.ovr and the icon is Speedcam.mbm. What you can also try and do is
to translate an existing overlay back to a text file and check how this
file looks and than to adapt your own file to have exactly the same format.
I hope to have been of some help and success.

Subject: p910 email program, Sony Clie ;)

Hi Mike,

Thinking about it some more and having used this option (downloading
headers only) this morning, there is still a difference. I can't delete the
headers I don't want to download from my mailbox on the P910 if I want to
keep the message in my remote mailbox to download them at a later stage.
This means that if for example I am traveling several days i continously
have to remember which "header-emails" i have to keep until I get back to
my PC or Psion. The EPOC system keeps the inbox on the Psion clean while
keeping those not downloaded on my remote mailbox. Maybe it is only a
marginal difference, but still a difference.

I'll have a look at any other email programs soon.

Best regards,

Itamar
