Subject: CF-Card 8GB
Hallo for all the hungries for Memory space:
SanDisk announced that the 8GB and 4GB TypeI CF-Cards are already available.
They have write speed of 9MB/s!
Sorry I didn't have a price :(
Works our lovely S5mx properly with this huge space?
Best regards from the snowed up harz hills.

Thanks for the information. I am selling the Upgrade RAM-module
for 59 EUR. Inserting is easy and done in 2 minutes also with three or
five left hands :)

Thank you Huub, Marcus, Jack and Itamar for the advice and assistance
concerning spelling dictionaries.
Is it possible to check the spelling in one part of document in one
language and another part in a second lagnuage? In WordPerfect for
example, this is achieved by insert codes. Is there any equivalent in Word
or with a macro utility?

No, I don't find your comments too negative at all - in fact I found myself agreeing with almost every one of them! Yet when I first obtained my 9210 in the summer of 2002 I slowly got used to its shortcomings and certainly, for me anyway, found the one box solution advantages far outweighed having to carry both a 5mx and IR equipped mobile phone around. What I found totally inexcusable was Nokia's idea of giving the poor thing a mere 4Mb of usuable RAM which I found completely irritating as I spent half the time closing down open programs just to open something else - something rather alien to a user with a 5mx. Of course the 9500 does not suffer from this plus opening the Opera browser doesn't close everything else down just to allow it enough RAM to operate properly! Personally I learnt to live with most of the shortcomings you listed and will still consider one when it becomes available.

The above url isn't easy to view - does it require frames enabled?
I peeked at the code and saw there a reference to a couple of other pages: http://website.leidenuniv.nl/~linthorsthjm/exabetal/doc1.html
http://website.leidenuniv.nl/~linthorsthjm/exabetal/doc2.html
But the first showed some info briefly, then blacked out.
Please state what's on the page, what dicts do you offer?

I'm sorry, but no. Not unless you desolder the ROM chip and replace it with an EPROM containing a copy of the English ROM in your other machine.
And then you would probably want to do something about the keyboard layout, too. (It probably has an AZERTY keyboard, right?)
But if you're desperate for a second S3mx, it wouldn't hurt to check either at www.posltd.co.uk (did I remember correctly) or at www.psionex.co.uk

Subject: Jotter location, P910i F/W upgrade and more on Caller ID
Mike Dyer asked
<<
does anyone know the location of Jotter files on a SE p series phone ? >>
In my P910, the Jotter notes are all contained in the single file: \documents\jotter\jotter
I went through an upgrade of my P910 today for all the wrong reasons: I just wanted to be on the latest release and was wrongly attracted to such vague mutterings as "stability enlancements" in the rather grandly titled "release notes". The fact that everything I read about the actual upgrade process itself advised caution - with at least half of all forum postings mentioning failure and even an inoperable phone - merely served up an additional challenge. So I did it.
Did it work - yes, albeit slowly (3 hours including backup, upgrade & restore)
Have I noticed any differences, enhanced stability, etc - Of course not - yet!
Last but not least: In my recent "rambling" posting I said it was not possible to disable caller ID easily. I've since discovered a work around: enter #31# before the dialled number or alternatively store this value infront of the stored number in the contacts database.
Hope all you UIQ people out there are enjoying your phones as much as me. Are we supposed to enjoy them?

If someone can give us the setup reqt's again for the 7Book and Netbook for the Buffalo card, I would appreciate it also. I have been over it with Ian and others but not sure why I can't either one working. I am still trying though. I would sure like to get one of them working. I always get to a certain point and then it won't connect. The activity light works and the performance light will blink on occasion and then stop.
Thanks,

Yes, all there in ROM.
>Regarding using Wi-Fi is it really as simple as just selecting "Easy Wi-Fi" and just letting the 9500 find my home Wi-Fi setup? Does it configure itself and automatically find the network or do I need to know
Yes, all automatic and really easy. I've been able to be instantly 'on' with about a dozen Wi-Fi networks around my village 8-) No settings needed. ____________________________________________________________________

Hi Folks,
Unless I'm much mistaken the 3mx OS is totally in ROM and can't easily be changed.
But I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to change cases - put the old machine (probably just the motherboard would do though the keys would need altering) into the new, good, case. It might also be worth contacting POS about a spare case.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Life with a P910 instead of a netBook
Recently, during a quiet moment at work, I realised that I now only use my netBook to access data in password protected spreadsheets. If I were to migrate this information to my P910 I really do think that my netBook would become an ornament.
What I find most interesting is not the fact that my P910 replaces the functionality of my netBook - it doesn't - but the fact that my mobile computer needs and usage has changed.
No longer do I spend time maintaining personal accounts - my bank sends me text messages every morning.
No longer do I create hundreds of small personal spreadsheets - I find that I don't really need most of them.
No longer do I spend a lot of time fiddling with applications and work-arounds to make my chosen device operate the way I want it to.
I have a greater acceptance of the limitations of my P910 than my netBook - I'm not sure why, I just do.
I find that I am better organised and more productive with my P910 - perhaps driven by the nature of my job and my own self.
The P910 is far from perfect and it does require me to use my laptop more often but, for myself, this combination offers me greater productivity and flexibility in my life.
I never thought that I would leave my netBook behind for a smartphone but there is most definitely life after Psion. At times I do miss the silkscreen buttons, integrated spell checker and maintained application status. Overall, though, having most of my communication and organisational needs served by a pocket sized device is marvellous.
I look forward to future UIQ devices and the rollout of UIQ3. Smartphones are better than I ever thought they could be. My main problem with them was false expectations and not knowing what I really needed from a mobile device in the first place.
The P910 is a fantastic product and well worth the asking price IMHO.
Cheers

>What mainly worries me is that (a) it sounds like an awful lot of effort to implement reliably, and (b) it would need a dedicated (internet) server running 24-7 (which would require money).<
(A) Actually, it wouldn't be that difficult as it would only require some basic database maintenance and email Send & Receive with some filtering & formatting. It could become quite complex and have lots of features, but they could be integrated over time.
(B) There are lots of free PHP/MySQL servers out there, which would do the job and as the only constants would be the database contents and the email account, migrating to another free server would be seamless and would only require the psioneering web site to change the URL its links point to.
To: Itamar Engelsman
> With all due respect to Antony's system the digest is not a democracy <
I appreciate the digest is not a democracy, but is a forum for discussion and as I knew the decision to implement any system is at the admins discretion, I wasn't asking for a vote on the idea.
> I only wonder why Antony decided to go public with his suggestions instead of contacting us again, but am sure it was with good intentions for the best of the digest only. <
Because the "thoughts for the day" topic reared its head again and the fact that some people like them and others consider them unnecessary, annoying or spam, it made me think it would be nice if there was a choice to receive the digest without them, at which point I recalled mentioning the centralised web administrated digest suggestion I offered a while back, which could have this feature and more. I recall that I thought it was a good idea at the time, received practically no feedback from the admin, assumed a lack of interest, so wondered what everyone else thought now the it crossed my mind again? I wasn't trying to tread on anyones toes by campaigning for the suggestion as a way to get the admin to change their minds. After all, if you did want it, it would require a lot of work from me and all I'd get for my troubles would be the abiity to remove TFTD and not having to request missing digests. The proposal would reduce the effort required to administer the digest and as I'm not an admin, would not benefit as much. I wasn't selfishly trying to have the digest formatted to my whims either as I'm not a fan of html mail as I have a Netbook, so prefer not to run macros just to read email. I would perhaps find it useful to receive the digest in xml format though, so I could integrate it into a database for searching, or as a knowledgebase on a Symbian/Psion website? I thought the ideal location for such facilities would be psioneering.co.uk
Perhaps if you always intend to use a Psion based app, you may consider making it open source, less any sensitive information of course. That way, others could suggest features and upon acceptance of the idea, make the development changes and submit them for final approval?

Tony, I've only had my Buffalo card and 7Book for about a week, but I can tell how I successfully surfed wirelessly once, and failed to surf wirelessly once.
On the weekend I went to a cafe that offers free wireless to guests, and tried to log in wirelessly without success. I then asked the waitress about the offer of free wireless, and she gave me a slip of paper with some login info, which included a SSID name and a 10-digit alphanumeric WEP key.
I then opened the system screen on the 7Book, selected the "Ethernet" icon, and created a new Ethernet setting called "Cafe1".
Here are the basic settings I used:
Service:
Name: Cafe1
Config. method: DHCP
Hostname: MOKKA-TGIF
Device: Lucent WaveLAN / Orinoco Card
Addresses: unchanged
Routing: settings slip, opened Mail, selected my email account, and told the S7 to fetch the mail using my "Cafe1" set up. After that I logged in without difficulty, and was able to use all my Internet apps.
At cafe2, I had less success. They also offered free wireless, but unlike cafe1, there were no login codes. The 7Book could sense that there was a wireless connection, but was unable to log on. I asked the owner how people logged in to the system, and he said "They just open their web-browser, hit enter and are brought to our login page. Then they just hit enter again, and they are online." Needless to say, I had no luck with the 7Book with this approach.
I hope this info helps a little.
Regards,
Peter
PS: How does one log into a free wireless hotspot which doesn't have an SSID or WEP encryption? Be grateful for any suggestions.

Subject: Battery settings for netBook/7Book
I found a program called "BattCheck" that will notify me once the main or backup battery in the 7Book needs recharging.
Since I understand that there is the risk of corrupting the CF card if the battery gets too low, I would like to enter a setting
that ensures that I always recharge the 7Book before there is any risk of CF card corruption. What would be some good settings for this?
Just off the top of my head I have entered the following initial and follow-up warning levels:
Main battery: 10.6 volt then 10.3 volt
Backup battery: 2.5 volt then 2.3 volt
Are these settings ok, or are there more accurate settings?
Thanks,
Peter
