Well Rolf I'm glad I'm a 'Psion freak', as having recently bought a new PPC; I joined 11 Yahoo PPC lists.

10 are a complete waste of time and the other ones digest is only sent every few days, with little content.

I get the impression that the 'old Psion' community is much more active than the current, 'must have' PPC community.

Subject: UIQs as 5mx replacement

To Itamar,

Thanks very much for your comprehensive response to my questions re 5mx replacement and the UIQ machines. I think I now get the picture. I checked some of the new Symbian units in the Internet and they look really good. I was very impressed with both the Nokia 9500 and the P910i. It's truly tempting to 'adopt' either of them. But then reality sets in, reminding me that what I need is a good PDA WITH a built in, decent (i.e., real) keyboard, and that I just don't care if it also has a phone (or camera).
In other words, I need an upgraded 5mx, one hopefully with colour screen and wireless connectivity and whatever else. Such a machine does not yet exist, to my knowledge (the two Windows xp lately mentioned still need further investigation but I am not optimistic), so I think I will continue using my 5mx (and later a spare) at least for a while and play it by ear.

Leaving one unit at home, as you suggest, does not work for me. Actually, the 5mx is my American Express, that is, I 'don't leave home without it', as I do much of my writing etc. outside my home, in places where using a separate keyboard would not be possible or convenient. One could say, perhaps, that the 5mx has spoiled me beyond redemption.

Thanks again for your thoughts

In fact, there are two versions of MakeDict utilities. The one that you can download from www.mypsion.ru is used to create K-9 files only. K-9 - is the previous version of K2. How you can use it is explained at correspondent page http://www.mypsion.ru/makedict.php but only in Russian so far.

The MakeDict for K2 can be downloaded from the Internet. Try this URL, please: http://sherwood.nm.ru/makedict.zip I believe that this version (it *is* different!) should work in the same way as MakeDict for K-9 works, but there is still no good description for this version even in Russian. I did not try this utility myself but it surely works - there are lots of various dictionaries for K2.

I would propose you to ask for details one of the following great
guys: either Robin Hood directly, or his co-author King Midas - he is the WebMaster of mypsion.ru.

Subject: Buying spam

Owen,

>>BTW, has anyone on the digest ever bought anything from a spammer, or does anyone here know someone who has bought something?<<

If you actually read spam, which I try not to, most of the time it doesn't actually make sense. The lengths to which the spammers go to avoid their spam being detected by altering words is unbelievable, meaning that much of their message is lost. Would you take anyone seriously who was offering to lower your M . 0   r  t ..g a + g e by 50 p.er..c?I know I wouldn't.

From what I have read, the greatest cause of all spam is the ease with which spammers are able to send their mail. There seem to be two main ways in which this is done; using unsecured mail servers and using home PCs which have been infected by a virus. Neither of these methods cost the spammer anything. If either or both issues could be dealt with, the amount of spam being sent would inevitably diminish, as to send the volume of spam currently being sent by "normal" means would cost far too much.

Happy New Year to all, Ian.

Re. Censorship & TFTD's - We will not censor the digest about this subject. However, I would like you all to note the various requests from subscribers to finish the discussion (socalled "self censorship" ? <BG>)

Re. Card reader - As I needed to back-up my Memo Pro card of the P910 I bought a Belkin fast card reader. The speed is actualy dazzling fast, it backe-up the 512Mb card with over 480 Mb of data in little under 2 minutes or so. If you need to use card readers a lot, this is a must for just under 20 pounds in the UK (Comet).

Re.: Spam & mail - You wrote "BTW, has anyone on the digest ever bought anything from a spammer, or does anyone here know someone who has bought something?"   I often wonder about this as well. However, It started many many moons ago with leaflets being put through your snail mail and from door to door deliveries. Do I know someone who bought from these people ?  Don't think so, but they must have gotten a response otherwise it would not have continued for so many years. I suppose it is the same with spam. There will always be people who will think "He, that is interesting" and either buy or subscribe. If you send millions of spam messages, the response has to be very very little to get thousands of answers worldwide.

Subject: Spem filters

Hello everybody,

First, I hope that every has had a good New Year party. It is still 2004 here in Belgium as I write this, but we are working on the problem. :-)

My answer to Owen who asked whether I bought from spammers or anyone I know bought from spammers would be "yes" twice. Before I get the "booh" and "hisss" ;-) I'd like to explain. Many Dutch and Belgian companies send unsollicited bulk e-mail, which is by definition spem.
This is against the law, but when I complain about it I get the formal denial that it is spem they send !
So I bought for example from Dixons and my mother bought from Neckermann and both companies send spem, in large quantities. :-(
A very good initiative was the foundation www.spamvrij.nl that collected the spem from Dutch companies, made it public and warned the companies. The web site still exists, with a good explanation on spem and how to get rid of it.

On its list there are major Dutch and international companies, ISP's (!), and even charities. The uneducated may receive spem, but it is also the uneducated that send it.

My provider (freesurf.fr) marks spem with the word ***spem*** and you can automate its mailserver to put these messages in an on-server mail folder called "spem". This mail folder will then be automatically purged occasionally.
If you do not create this folder, the mail will get into your mailbox, but still with the ***spem*** marking in the header (this happened also with some contributions to the Digest, so apparently one of the operators has an ISP that has the same filter).
Anyway, this is very Psion-friendly, as the spem would not be in the POP3-mailbox (but only in the webmail interface in the appropriate folder).
Sounds tempting... but Freesurf does not give the opportunity to manipulate this filter. I just wanted to create the folder "spem" to get rid of the of the lot when I noticed that an e-mail of a friend was marked "spem". The funny thing was:

I received an e-mail from him: <subject>
I accidentally deleted it, so he resent it : FWD <subject>
I answered, he answered and so I got back: RE: FWD: <subject>
and this *and only this* last e-mail was marked spem!
So Freesurf seems to behave a bit illogical, I would say.

I think I will activate the "spem" folder, but I need to remind myself that whenever I am back at a Window$ PC I need to check the webmail interface for any such incidents.

Yours truly,

Thomas van der Zijden
