Hi all,
we (almost) all got a mail from Slufoot NYC.
The Digest team is just investigating the circumstances and the sender of this message. The DIgest team received some emails, containing concrete suspicions. We didn't include them in the Digest, to protect the suspicious people. This is not a censorship!
We will, hopefully soon, inform you about results.

Does anyone here still use a series 5? I have one with a 128mb cf card. What cool things can I do with it? I can't find any routing software for it... I have a few programs for it.. great battery life.

Thanks for your reply Phil. I've had Solun 5.2 on my 5mx and 7 for some time now and as I am now putting a new Clove 5mxPRO into use, I thought I'd use the latest version.
I have a zip called Solun543 and looking inside it's got SOLUN43.SIS with a '99 date. The zip, Solun52 has Solun.sis in with an '01 date.
So there was no version 5.43. I'll go back to freepoc again and get the latest.
Thanks for your help.

Owen,
First of all, it will be sad to see you leave the digest - hopefully just for a short while. Your insights on Psion and on sailing are fun to read.
Good luck on your new journeys and may the gods of the seas keep your sails full, your bilges dry and your bow pointed always in the right direction.
As to spam software. If only we were all so lucky as to have your experience of no spam. I get a few every day on the two email addresses that I maintain. Not much as to be annoying but still not spam-free.

That can't be the source of my problems because I'm connecting with the cable from the Revo/Mako cradle to the serial port on the Dell laptop.
But thanks for warning me. I do have a Belkin USB hub that I've planned
to use in connection with my desktop.
Michael Robins had a suggestion that I think may be more to the point:>

I haven't installed XP2 yet -- but I think the problem may be due to a firewall - perhaps the one supplied by my DSL provider (SBC Yahoo). I
will try your instructions and then call SBC Yahoo for further
instructions if Ican't manage the problem that way. My one reservations
is that my desktop uses the same DSL service and hasn't given me the
same trouble. But it is running on Windows 98. I wish I could dump XP,
but Dell says it can't be done. I'm trying to arrange to migrate to
Linux, but am stuck at the stage of trying to back up the Dell. I won't
go into that here.

I have it trying to use Com 2 and Com 4. So far as I can discover, only Com 1 is already committed, but it uses the same IRQ as Com 3, so I've
taken both off the list. So PsiWin should be trying to use 2 first,
then 4. I've had the baud rate set for the same on both machines.

I've followed your directions and we'll see what happens. Only
Elogerr.exe and Psconsv.exe turned up in the list of processes and I
din't find either the Psion or the Copyanywhere icon in the system tray.
I also got answers to my query about installing SP - including horror
stories, as anyone who read the digest knows. I think I'll pass SP2 by
for now. It seems mostly tied in with the use of Windows Explorer,
which I avoid like the plague. Firefox is much better and safer.
I'll let you know whether any of this works. At the moment, I'm on the
road and can't test the results of following this advice.

Hi Chris & Andrew,
thanks for your big work with this large macro.
But I wonder a little why you seem to invent the wheel anew: On Rolf Vonau's pages
home.arcor.de/rhvonau
you can find the app ReplyEveryMail
which does (since years) very similar things like your macro, plus fully automated answering of mails in various digests (works perfect with Digesthandler, another great prog from his keyboard)! All this in English, German (and maybe Italian). And it supports even more languages in mailanswering. I use this package since years - it is great IMHO.
I write this not to discourage you, but to eventually avoid more double work being done.

Subject: Frontview
I found another major problem with this program, it gulps up battery power. Last night I left the office at 6.00 pm having had the phone in it's cradle connected to the mains for most of the day. I made two calls in the car, phone connected to the mains of the car in it's car cradle. I checked some phone numbers at night and one or two diary queries and went to play 5-aside football. At 11.30 pm I checked my phone and the battery power stood on 29% ! In 5-1/2 hours that should not happen and the only difference from before is this program.
I contacted the Company and let's see what they answer. Will keep you all posted.

Subject: Split screen in Word or Editor?
I'd like to use a split screen when working on longer documents. In other words, to divide the screen horizontally in two, so that I can scroll though the text at the bottom of the screen independently from the text at the bottom of the screen. Is there any way to do this using a Psion?
Thx,
Peter

Subject: Slutfoot
Hi Folks,
Whoever did send us all those eMails, apparently from "Slutfoot", was probably a Digestive trying to make a point about the availability of Digestives' eAddresses. Apart from his posts (and one from Alan Morris - neither of which are actually spam) I have still received *_no_* spam at my Digest eAddress and only one spam at any other eAddress since leaving BT and Tiscali a long time ago.
The spam I got at Tiscali was actually virus-generated eMail (SWEN - a PC virus and I don't use a PC) and that at BT was probably because BT published my eAddress in plain text. Since then I've only had only that one spam, at my ISP eAddress, and that was some time ago now.
Very simply, if a list of Digestives' eAddresses had fallen into a spammer's hands then most of them would receive spam. If a list of the eAddresses of Digestives who have posted to the Digest had fallen into spammers' hands the most of them would receive spam. If a list of the eAddresses published in the Digest had fallen into spammers' hands the most of them would receive spam.
I must be on all three lists.
I use no spam-filtration at all.
I get no spam.
From this I would personally deduce that the Digest is *_not_* responsible in any way for any spam.
Even if it could be demonstrated that spammers could glean eAddresses from the Digest without subscribing, not something I believe, I doubt that it has happened.
There are many ways spamBots do glean eAddresses and they are not always avoidable. As I'm not in business avoidance is comparatively easy for me. This and a few other groups have published my eAddress with no ill-effect yet. But none have published it anywhere in plain text on the 'Net.
I think that's why I get no spam.
Happy days,
Phil.

Howdy!

Many users of HAM (amateur) radio equipment come across the same problem with new notebooks with no RS-232 port. In this case the RS-232 port is used for connecting equipment like Pactor modems as well as remote controlling the frequency settings of the transceiver etc. This subject is discussed in the help file for the Airmail software which I use with my HAM radio and Pactor modem to get Winlink e-mail.
They recommend Edgeport interfaces from Inside Out Networks www.ionetworks.com and Keyspan adapters (models 19QI and 19QW). These are available from www.cdw.com amongst other places. They also mention a Startech adapter which is supposed to be good and inexpensive. About Belkin they say: "Belkin's adaptor is widely distributed but is a terrible product - expensive, large and badly written drivers which do not support the latest versions of Windows."

Subject: Dud CF card.
Hi.
I have an 80mb Lexar CF card here which won't work. I haven't needed it for a long time, but now I have a use for it. The Airmail software I use to connect to Winlink stores its messages in text format so if I set the software to store the messages on the CF, I could very easily pop the card into the Psion to read and reply to my messages on the Psion instead of using the power hungry Toshiba and then just pop the card back in the Toshiba when I connect to Winllink.
I don't want to let Win2k anywhere near my 256mB D drive in the 5mx except for via PsiWin, so moving that between 5mx and Toshiba is not an option. Apart from that, I might want to use the Psion to check something while I'm connected to WInlink.
When I put the CF card in my PCMCIA adapter, the Toshiba registers the presence of the adapter, but not the CF card. My 5mx says "Disk not present". Smartformat says "Not supported" and then "Disk not present". An 80mb card isn't worth a fortune these days, but if anyone has any idea how to get it working again, I would be grateful for suggestions.
