How did you perform the latter? You *must* delete the c:\system\data\commsdb.dat file on the netBook and type in the settings manually, you cannot copy it over from a previous EPOC release. This has to do with the additions to the TCP/IP stack to support network cards. The file format has changed.
As for the settings, try the entry "Psion Gold Card Modem":
115200 Baud, PC-Card, Faxclass Auto, Initstring: AT&F, Hardware Handshake.
If you create the directories C:\LOGS\Email, C:\LOGS\Etel, C:\LOGS\Fax, C:\LOGS\Netdial, you will find a bunch of logfiles there which may help you to diagnose your connection problems.

Stéphane,

I wouldn'd dare to try. Lithium Ion batteries are delicate equipment with some special electronics in the
pack to protect the cells against wrong charge or high current. Ask Chris Pulster for a spare! he could
even provide a netBook PRO battery with 1 1/2 the capacity ot the original netBook battery.

Norbert,
>>try to format the CF-Card in your S5. But - unfortunately - some CFCards did'nt work at the s5 at all.<<
The problem with your solution is that most Psions will not recognise the presence of a CF card which has been formatted as ie. FAT32; this makes it impossible to format the card in the Psion. This is Pat's problem, as he asid this in his original post; "Unfortunately, I did the same with the 48Mb one and now the S5 doesn't recognise it."
Stephane,

battery: Clove's or Expansys's prices seem to me out of reach (250 ?...) Anyone knows of a better deal ? Perhaps there is a way to build it by oneself with spare NiCad or IonLith batteries...?<<
The following link is to a Russian Psion website, which shows how to make your own battery pack. I seem to remember reading the description
somewhere in English, but I forget where.

Subject: Nokia 9500
Could anyone be interested in a brand new Nokia 9500 bought in London a couple of days ago (specifically on 11 Jan 2005). It is not yet registered with Nokia.
There is nothing at all wrong with it, and if there were it would of course be covered by the guarantee. After 'playing' with it for a couple of days, it is not really the device for me, and I would like if possible to arrange a quick sale at a mutually agreeable price where the buyer gets a good deal and I cut my losses.
Please let me know of any interest off digest.

Subject: RE: net Book not recognizing back-up battery
Hi,
I have had the very same problem. Spacers bending the contacts etc. did nothing.
The solution was to pull all batteries leave it for 5 minutes then do the following
in this order:
1 load CF card with OS
2 Plug the power supply in the wall
3 plug the power supply in the netBook
4 slide the main battery in
5 put the back up battery in

Subject: Sony Ericsson update policy
Upon my regular checking of their update website I noticed that there is an update for my P910. However, I could not find any details about the update so I contacted customer support.
Their answer just came in that "The update service updates your firmware of the phone there is no details that you can access to find out what it is updating".
This is of course absurd. Why would I update my phone and loose a function or have something changed I don't want to be changed ? I wrote back to them giving them this message, but somehow I don't think this will help.

Re.: PbRead (HebRead) - Thanks for your answer, but as I already wrote in the last digest someone is now looking at it.
Answer to: Tom Robertson
Re.: Passthru and bband - I know for sure it works with MochaPPP as I do that both at work and at home (when not using my Wifi card). U always found Passthru a more difficult program to work with and cannot tell you whether it works with that program as well. If you don't succeed, try MochaPPP.
Answer to: Thomas F. van der Zijden
Re.: WiFi prices - Yes, in general this service is indeed expensive and when I travel I usually just use GPRS for my emailing. On the other hand your conclusion is not 100% correct, as one can of course surf to Freesurf.fr via a broadband connection and still pay nothing while being connected to their website. I have to remember once every 3 months to connect to Freeserve UK with my goldcard modem and stay connected and surf the web for 3 to 5 minutes (usually late at night when it is cheap) in order to keep my email address (and that of the digest) from being dicsonnected.

Re.: Battery for Netbbok - Did you try places like eBay ? Maybe someone on the digest has a spare one to sell you ?

Howdy!

REM (ReplyEveryMail) can be a bit daunting to configure, but once you have got it set up right, all you have to do is launch it and sit back and watch. That's what I did when I decided to reply to this post. I launched REM and it created a new e-mail addressed to the digest with Alan's text in it already quoted, inserted my sig and TFTD (which I later replaced manually because I didn't like it.), saved the message as draft and landed me back in the same message in the digest so I could continue reading where I left off. All automagic!
The only time I have to go into the menus in REM these days is if I change my sigs which I do every time I change my position. (But sometimes I forget and it looks like this little old boat has wings and a jet engine...)
The only "problem" I have found with REM is that if there are no addresses at all in the "To" field of an incoming e-mail, REM will crash. This sometimes happens when the sender has put all the recipients in the BCC field and a couple of my friends do that when they send out their travel logs. Rolf was working on a new improved version of REM which was supposed to address some issues with the user interface in the menus, but I don't know what has happened to that.

I do that by putting in a CR at appropriate places and typing my text (like here).
> But much more important would be the ability to
> limit the line length of _my_ new text
I'm not sure I understand why. As long as you make sure to start a new line before typing your new text the text should linewrap automagically in whatever e-mail program it is read in. In my humble opinion, comments to the quoted text should always be in a seperate paragraph so it's absolutely clear what is new text and what is quoted from the e-mail you are replying to.

Subject: My last message to the digest!
Hi
OK. This time it's for real. I am really really leaving the digest. I will send my unsubscribe message tomorrow. I find that as long as I'm still receiving the digest, it is compulsive behaviour to reply to messages and I need to concentrate on getting the boat ready now! I'll just leave enough time for this message to be posted before I unsubscribe and would be rejected as an unknown user...
In a few days time I'll be leaving the Canaries heading south, and I will be using Winlink via my HF radio and Pactor 1 modem for e-mail which is much to slow for receiving daily digests. In a year or two I may find myself earning money again and at that time I might decide to invest in a Pactor 2 modem which should be just about fast enough. If the digest is still around, I might join again then. I will not go back to using GSM for e-mail. It's just too darned expensive when you're on a tight budget.
In the meantime, HASTA LA VISTA everybody and anyone who wants to is welcome to keep in touch off list! E-mails sent to my frisurf address will be checked by my Mom and forwarded to my Winlink address if appropriate.
PS. My position updates when I'm on the move can be found on www.winink.org and under Shiptrack on www.mmsn.org. Apparently, the map on Winlink is better. You must enter my HAM callsign LA7QZ to find me. It should work now, so give it a try.
PPS. I'm using the long sig for this last message so those who wish to do so can note my details. The Spanish phone number will be discontinued when I leave the Canaries. The Norwegian one now goes to my Mom who normally knows where I am and what I'm doing.
Thanks for being such a great crowd!

(digest-alert: this is kind of self-adverticing :-)
I am selling Netbook batteries 1500mAh for 149 eur and the 2200mAh PRO
Batterie for 179 EUR. The PRO fits in the Netbook EPOC and lasts 10-12h. These are new original Psion items.
Besides I can offer netbooks with english or french EPOC for 399 EUR
(very good condition) or 299 EUR (some signs of usage on display/case).

Subject: Phonesecure for UIQ
Now this is a kute little program. Once installed on the internal disk (otherwise the memory disk can be taken out) it will allow you, if your phone is stolen or in the wrong hands, to send a SMS message to your own phone (from someone else's phone) locking it completely. It can do the following :
- lock : lock the phone
- unlock : Unlock the phone again
- Imei : send you a message back with the IMEI code so you can warn the
provider to block the phone
- high pitch noise : it can also be set to emit a high pitched siren when locked allowing you to locate the phone (if you lost it at home ...)
- settings : with a password you can safeguard your phone settings against others changing them when playing around on it (kids).
- SIM change lock : automatically enable lock when sim is changed
- SIM change : automatically send an SMS to a predefined number when the SIM is changed
and you can reset the password by entering the software registration code if you forgot the password. And all this for Euro 9.90.

Subject: Buffalo
Dear all,
I am wondering if I can use my netbook wirelessly on my wireless broadband connection (already shared by 3 PCs)
Connection - BT Broadband
BT Wireless Network 1250 (Modem etc)
PCs using various different wireless USB adapters (Network mode is Access Point)
Psion Netbook build 156
Buffalo wireless 54Mbps Notebook Adapter (WLI-CB-G54L) PCMCIA
I can't seem to find out if this buffalo adapter uses the same Lucent chipset as the WLI-PCM-L11GP-3

Please NOT. You as a Psion user should know better then a PC user, that a sender of a mail never knows how much caracters the receiver will see in a line of his display. The last digest with your mail, I was reading outside in the dark, walking home. To improve readability I switched the 5mx to maximal zoom. All mails with infinite paragraph length were perfectly readable in ALL zoomlevels. The only "untidy" and NOT aligned lines were the quoted text lines.
(To show you how forced line feeds look on a
5mx with max zoom, I'll insert
the line feeds manually in these lines, switch
zoom to max and enter line
feeds at the ends of the display. Do you think,
this looks tidy?
By the way, here you can see, how your own
quotings looked on my display:
> as I already said, PsiWin was very slovenly
programmed by

entries in the
> registry have to be deleted. But I found after

OK - I reformat my quotings to a fixed line lenght as well, but only to use the "> "-characters at beginning of the lines to clearly mark quoted text against my text. Maybe I should switch to another quoting style like:
--<"quote">-----
Quoted text over several lines without additional linefeeds from me that is free adjustable by the receiver.
--<"unquote">-----
To all: please don't enter line feeds inside a paragraph, neither manually nor automatically, as long as you don't know the exact display width of the recipient of you mail. Let the receiver justify his page width himself. Especially on a mail digest, you'll never know the line width of all recipients. To please all, you'll have
to guess the
shortest, and
this might be
the display
widht of a
cellphone or a
small palmtop
in portrait
mode.
Do you really
prefer reading
the display in
this format?
Me not.

Once one of my CF' didn't recognize by Psion or Laptop either.
The only cure was a formatting in my Canon Ixus camera. Maybe you can find someone with a Canon to try (or a friendly clerk in a camerashop).
Why did you format it in the Olympus?
If the camera recognize it, there should be no need to format it.
If the camera doesn't recognize it, you could almost expect nonfunctioning in the Psion afterwards, especially after your bad experience with the 256Mb card.
