As some people now receive the digest in html format and are able to jump from the subjects down to the particular mesage and back to the subjects again, we would like to ask you all to be more particular what you write in the subject field and not to leave it just with "The Digest". Thank you.

My new FS LOOX-720, also Pocket PC 2003, came with M$ Outlook 2002. It has a 'Psion Synchronizer' icon on the 3rd line down, and last on the right.
I've not used it and don't ever intend to (Outlook that is), but I had to have a look. My 3mx does it all!
ActiveSync will then sync Outlook to PPC.
But I don't know how well it will work.

Simon, install the EPOC emulator on W98 and run Psion Word, but not as stable as it's running on windows.

I thought that The Digest has been able to pass a € (Euro sign before the brackets) sign for a long time, but my memory may be at fault here.
I regularly exchange e-mails (about 6 a week) with a friend in Germany. He uses windows and I use this nB and the € sign goes both ways with plain text.

Dear Psionistas,
My mother in law uses Windows 98 and was recently complaining about the complexity and unpleasantness of MS Word. I just wondered if any of you folks knew of a word procesing app for Win98 that looked and behaved more like our old friend EPOC Word, i.e. easy to use, simple interface, but powerful and stable behind the scenes?
How about using the built-in Word Pad which gets installed when you install Win 98? It's a simple software and saves files in *.doc format so can be used with Work if that is what you later want.

From: Charles Davies <address truncated> Subject: Psion 5mx migration.
How about synchronizing your 5MX contacts with Outlook then synchronizing the iPaq with Outlook contacts?
I did a migration myself to iPaq (Windows Mobile 2003 also) when my Psion quit on me and did the transfer this way. The only issue is if you have special fields in Psion Contacts that is not recognized by Outlook. Review you fields and if this is the case, modify them to make them as close as possible to the Outlook fields for a faithful transfer of all data.

Subject: Re: Diamond Mako battery
I've had two or three Mako"s (I tend to drop things on hard surfaces) and have never encountered that problem. So it can't be all that easy.
The battery has never given me any problems except on my first Mako, which I was able to use for a couple of years despite the cracks in the glass of the screen that resulted from my carelessness. I should also warn you not to put frozen food dirctly on the top of the Mako on the screen side. I fried a screen that way. Setting aside the trouble I've given my Mako's, they are wonderfully sturdy and reliable machines.

Subject: Root entries (for Larch)
Hi Folks,
Larch, according to Atelier's "Essential Disk Utilities" the most root entries on a CF partition for an ER5 machine is 512 - *_but_* - this is 512 DOS-style 8.3 filenames, filename.ext(ension). I think the Psion (or MC218) format allows that many. As we use extended filenames they use up those root entries so a more realistic number would be 250, and each subdirectory also has a filename further reducing this number. The maximum has to do with what system the card is formatted under.
A subdirectory (or folder if you're a Mac person) does not have any theoretical limit and you're most unlikely to get anywhere near the practical limit, determined solely by the size of the card and the size of the files.
All this makes sense to me as I date from DOS days.
But a hierarchical approach to directory structure is usually better anyway. Things are more organised that way. I have 10 directories and 2 files in my root directory on the D: drive, a 256 MB CF card. Everything else, and there's a lot of it, is in those directories and their subdirectories. And I think those 2 files are probably 2 too many.
Just make a folder, giving it a memorable name, and make it your default folder (give it a Macro5 hotkey) and move all your root files into it.
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Re: Sony Ericsson update policy
Hi, Itamar,
When I bought my R320s, it came with desktop drivers that turned out to be hopelessly outdated. They gave great trouble to my laptop, and no one at Sony even answered my e-mails, let alone advised.
I like my phone, but stay away from its tech support. Good for you to pause before updating--I wish I had done that. Have you explored:

Subject: Psion 5mx migration,
Answer to: Charles
Re.: Psion 5mx migration - The first answer is of course, change your mind and stay with EPOC / Symbian <G>. I think you can also export your contacts from the REVO to a .vcf file which you than should be able to import onto your new machine. I had some problems doing this due to the differences in the Contacts program on the mBook and other EPOC versions, but with the REVO you might not have these problems.

All my CF cards with a few exceptions have been formatted to give 512 "slots". This includes 2, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 340 and 1Gb cards. The exceptions are 256 and 512 which have 256.
I think this is more likely to be a function of where it's formatted: I once wrote a utility to create more space on floppy disks by reducing this to 16 (32?) files.
Don't forget though that long file names (eg over 8 characters) will need more than one "slot".
