Subject: Dead 5mx - ideas?
<
Hi,
I think it's a couple of years since I posted on this list but I still see
the discussions and use my 5mx everyday, having yet to be convinced that anything else could replace it.
On Sunday, my 5mx, in its protective Palmtec case fell about 6 inches onto
a thickly carpeted floor. It didn't even occir to me to check all was well but the next morning I found it was completely dead - no signs of life whatever.
Fortunately, two years ago I bought a back-up machine on eBay which I've
now brought into use. Unfortunately, I hadn't backed up for a couple of
weeks - silly me! Anyway, I'm pretty much back to where I was now, so it could have been worse but I'll now have to buy another backup machine.
My questions is this: the options for my broken 5mx are to throw it away
or open it up and see if I can see what's wrong, so can anyone suggest what
I might look for? I.e. likely cause of sudden death following a minor shock?
Thanks & regards to all on the list.

One "simple" (out of others) solution is to recreate (with Editor) its "Index" file

Subject: Re. P910i and email
Thanks to Alan and Itamar for reassuring me that it is actually possible to email from a P910. Fortunately, I managed to find out what was going on
today. When sending email via my Internet provider's smtp server (mail.planet.nl), I was only able to send mail to other @planet.nl
addresses. When I tried sending mail via Orange's own smtp server, I wasn't able to send any mail at all. After speaking to Orange customer support,
they suggested changing to a different smtp server, which did the trick.
Bit of a strange chain of events really, and not exactly helped by a lack
of information on the Orange website.
Cheers, Ian.

Storage on a public web site is extremely problematic and probably not a
good idea.
Here's what I'm willing to do if you want the 2 CDs for Europe. I've
checked into mailing costs, packaging, and PayPal fees I'd have to pay. For Europe my best estimate is $6.00 - cheaper for the US.
If you're interested, send me your mailing address.
I've given this response to the few who have sent me personal e-mails about the files.

Subject: PsiWin data size on Windows.
The summertime date 'bug' causing PsiWin to backup all files, the next
backup after a GMT/BST time change, has been well documented.
However, I've just been looking for a file and discovered that the Arc.00? folders hold duplicated copies of files, so making a backup of your windows files much bigger than they need be.
This is for all unchanged files, which if this 'bug' did not occur, would
not be backedup again.
The PsiWin backup will move the 'Backup' folder file to an Arc.* folder
after the GMT/BST time change and place a duplicated copy in the 'Backup' folder, but with a one hour difference in time.
6 months later, the same happens, moving all files along one folder, but
with the file time one hour different in the opposite direction, making it
the same time as 12 months before.
Every 6 months the same happens.
This occurs for all files that are unchanged on the Psion.
Alan.

Having now looked at the list myself, it apears that Ben (still) doesn't
check it very often, and may reply to posts there even less. In
particular, the list has recently expressed a lot of interest in
open-sourcing the current EPOC version of Mentor, but Ben has yet to
reply. It's just a thought, but: Ben might be less willing to open-source Mentor, if he finds that someone is already giving keys away for free...

Having briefly looked at the source for Mentor, it appears that the key is stored in "C:\System\Mentor\Mentor.ini", as I expected.

Perhaps it's time to create an (encrypted?) database containing all your registration codes?

Subject: MC218 for sale
Hi there!
Is anybody interested in buying my Ericsson MC218 (aka Psion Series 5mx)
that sadly is resting unused for two years after I betrayed it for a Palm Tungsten T2?
It was bought from Expansys in January 2001 and lays untouched since July
2003; I still have its original box, receipt and it comes with a lot of stuff:
- POD docking station + sync & charge cable
- original Route Planner CD
- original Collins Dictionary ita/eng
- registered versions of nConvert, RmrZip, MBMView
- one spare 30MB CF card
Offers are welcome: all the above is located in Italy and I will search for the best solution for international shipping if necessary...
Ciao for now :-)
Sergio
PS: the machine is perfectly working and in perfect condition, no problems (touch wood) with the screen cable and touch screen (but flat cables are
the original ones, so no guarantee about their durability...)
PPS: and what about having the machine on which SaveMail was developed????? Just kidding ;-)))
