Subject: Software for Series 60 - Nokia 6600, and problems with Nokia PC Suite
Hi Folks,
Remembering back to when we "just" had Psions, it was quite common for Digestee's to list their favourite software. Now that the Symbian powered phones have had a chance to mature, how about we do a similar thing for those?
I'll start off with my favourites :-
Autolock - locks the phone after a pre-determined time period.
Weather v0.3 by Justin Armstrong - gets current weather reports from airports. Includes visibility, pressure and wind speed and direction. Good for live weather conditions. Think I found it at www.badpint.org
Weather Companion - gives current weather for various world cities, and a 5 day forecast. This gives likely weather, wind strength and direction and a pressure forecast. Produced by Wireless Apple.
Dashfly Minutes - a calculates call cost summaries, and monitors amount of data and texts sent. If you input your tariff details it will warn you when you start paying, and the costs.
Zipman - a zip / unzip utility. Good if you are downloading software direct to the phone.
I have also used Worldmate - this has selectable city clocks and alarms.
Tetris Deluxe - as it says....
What have other people found to be useful?
I tried installing Nokia PC suite yesterday so that I could back my phone up. Got it working OK, but then found I couldn't connect to the internet using my phone as the modem, so had to roll back Windows XP. Has anybody got any suggestions?
Has anybody used a Series 60 phone for instant messaging? What software did you use on the phone, and have you looked at the costs compared to say text messaging?
Cheers,
John

I love the Psion's Agenda program of all the PIM I have used so far which includes MS Outlook. I would be grateful if someone can tell me if there's a similar one that works on Windows XP. Thank you very much!

Do Orange support the Nokia 9500? I have emailed them several times asking
when the 9500 will be sold by Orange but they have failed to get back to me.
Did you just purchase a SIM free 9500?

Hello everybody.
I am an old Psion lurker where mostly active back on the Compuserve forum. I am sorry to say that I now have converted from Psions to other handheld devices and therefore I am looking for a place to sell my old stuff.
Can adds be posted here ? I would perfer if someone here needs a backup machine and we can arrange something.

Subject: Windoze, 95 or 98?
Hi Folks,
Marcus, I'd totally forgotten that Windows 3.1 was partly 16 bit. As the only 16 bit machines I've ever owned are my SIBO machines I've never given it much thought and none in the past 4 years.
But I've decided not to go back to 3.1 as most of my stuff will run either under DOS 7 or Windoze. I don't know if I can get 98 so first I might try with the 95 already installed. I believe that is 32 bit.
I understand the 5mx emulator is an in an enormous download from Psion. Three things;
1) Can the download be resumed?
I have a 56k connection and my ISP automatically cuts it after 120 minutes.
2) Can I find a smaller download?
3) If I have to use Windoze 98, where can I download that?
In the meantime I'm having fun (?) checking all my old software and disks. I found the laptop does recharge itself. It doesn't have a CD drive so I've got to use the Mac to transfer stuff on CD to the laptop. But there's no great problem with that.
There were two programs on my desktop that I bought but the disks were thrown away while I was in hospital. The most important was Lotus Improv and the other was Lotus AmiPro. Actually I've got the final (ATM) disk for both but that's all. I can't find them on the web. Can anyone here help, particularly with Improv?
Happy days,
Phil.

Just would like to inform that I've been working on such a converter for some time. The first phase is Symbian Word and other text formats. Then we'll see about Sheet. They are so called 'binary stream' formats and the header UID1 = 0x10000037
However, formats which make use of the Symbian RDBMS are - I would say - impossible to convert unless you introduce an intermediate format, e.g. comma delimited tables. Those formats can be recognised by the header UID1 = 0x10000050. They include Agenda, Data and Contacts.
Thanks to Chris Handley for alerting me that these questions had been asked in the Digest.
Kind regards

Subject: Find/search in data
Dear all,
I have created a database using the inbuilt data app for fungi. I have several labels which contain text. All are 'text' labels except one which is 'memo' label.
When I search for a word such as -brown- the search only finds the first two mentions of the word brown and ignores the rest. I have tried moving the memo label up/down, makes no difference. Does anyone know how to make data search for and find all text typed into the find box?
Thanks in advance

Subject: Problem installing 3rd party software on 5mx
Hi all!
I have had no problems installing Opera, EDU or The Dialler on the Internal Drive of my 5mx, but whenever I try to do the same on my new Lexar 512MB CF card - it worked before - nothing works now !!
For example. I wanted to install ConvertPro from Pscience5 website using Psiwin 2.3.3. When I tried, I keep getting the following error message:
"Epoc Install Problem Report"
A problem occurred while copying D:/system/apps/convertpro/convertpro.aif.
Please try installation again.
Anyone met this problem. I'm sure it is something very simple. But I haven't a clue how to progress from here.
All suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
Nicholas

Subject: GPRS on 9500, multitasking,
Answer to: Kevin Thorne
Re.: GPRS on 9500 - I am quite sure that must be possible. I use my P910 as a modem to use GPRS on my mBook whenever I travel outside the UK. As I sue SE, i can't help you with the settings, but they should not be anything difficult to do.
Answer to: Ian Chapple
Re.: multitasking - I agree with you, it is somewhat tedious. However, what is wrong with using SMan ? Make SMan one of the icons at the top of your screen. One click to SMan and one click to any open program. Alternatively there is a program called Desktop which gives you screens with 12 possible icons to programs, fully programmable by the user. You can also add any number of folders with more icons to programs. Another options is Handy Day which also has a section to open other programs with programmable folders to add.

Subject: P910 and card reader, SE p910 Keyboard, smartmovie, Corporate email,
Answer to: Ian Chapple
Re.: P910 and card reader - I had some problems like that as well. In the end it works for me at home with a Belkin fast card reader and a Sony 512 Mb card. The same set-up will not work in the office, and I really don't know why. Maybe you should persevere and try some other combinations / options available to you.
Answer to: Mike Dyer
Re.: SE p910 Keyboard - This is not a keyboard but a "thumbboard". I hardly use it, mainly to enter passwords where the text must be very exact. Actually I use mainly handwriting input on the screen. After a while you get quite used to it and make few mistakes. It is quirte accurate. However, I don't write documents on it, only short messages, emails and general text input.
Answer to: Arabbitte
Re.: smartmovie - This program actually uses as the source file flims downloaded on the internet and not DVD's. if you want to see DVD's on your P910 it is also possible but with a different program called "DVD to mobile" from http://www.makayama.com. The main difference is that this program uses the video program of the P910 and you pay for the translation software. I tested the demo version which gives 5 minutes of the film only, and it looked just as impressive as Smartmovie. The screen quality of Smartmovie is impressive as said, but you do need the earphones to get proper sound.
Re. Corporate email - My question is really whether you set your corporate mail to be forwarded to your P910 or do you actually enter the exchange on the server from the phone ?

Subject: UIQ: Nowspeak
This is a new program for voice interface. It claims to find a contact from the list without the need to voice training. Theoretically it would be a great idea as the built in voice recognition drains the battery considerably and you need to program each contact you want to have a voice contact for.
In reality I found that it does not function well at all. Easy names where there is only one in the system it does recognise, but anything a bit more difficult it will not find. From the 10 trials it found one or two.
I think this program needs some further developing before it could be of interest to me.

Subject: Re: Revo Battery Poll & Free Mags
Might as well get my 4 cents worth in (2 cents x 2 Makos).
My Mako worked great. So much so that I bought a second Mako as a backup when it was offered with a major discount.
After a couple of years, I started having the battery problem. I sent both units to Canada and had new batteries outfitted along with the pcb/software fix. No joy. Both redeveloped the classic battery problem within
months.
The Mako so far has been the best carry around machine I've used (compared to 3a, 5, 5mx and Treo). I was sorry to have to abandon them. I sent one to a member who had helped me out with power supplies for my MBook, and another I tried to give to another forum member (the PO system managed to steal the defective Mako and delivered an empty box).
In my opinion the Revo/Mako could have been Psion's top machine for portable PDA convenience if they had just got the charging system right (rocket science??? Not!!!).
Now I use my MBook as my main machine, my Treo for carrying around PDA, and my two 5mx's are stored as backups for when the MBook fails (all machines do, eventually).
<<No one will ever convince me that built-in, non replaceable by Mr Joe Average, rechargeable batteries are the way to go.>>
Kieth, when it's done correctly, it's excellent. Palm got it right. I wouldn't have it any other way with my Treo. It has an impeccable charging system that works regardless of how you approach recharging.
Free Mags:
If anyone wishes an almost complete set of Palmtop User and Palmtop and is willing to repay me for shipping charges, please contact me off list. I
really don't want to take them to the dump.

Subject: Revo Battery Poll
My 2 pennies worth: I've had my Revo since 1999. When the battery problem hit me, I first went to D&G, where the connection was fixed. However, the problem persisted. I then went to SRS (http://www.srsgmbh.de) where I was told that the batteries had simply reached the end of their life-expectancy (so many recharging cycles). They put in a new set of batteries. Since then, I only recharge when the charge is below 15%. What can I say? It works perfectly well for me - no problems since. I still love my Revo dearly. Regards

Subject: Top 100 gadgets of all time
The US magazine has produced a list of the top 100 gadgets of all time. However, it's incomplete because...................there's no Psion!!!! There are various Palms, RIMs, laptops and MP3 players, but no Psion. No doubt a result of Psion's rubbish marketingin the US.
See http://www.mobilepcmag.com/features/2005_03/top100gadgets.html for the full list.
