Subject: Register review of Nokia 9300

Hi all,

I don't recall if anyone has already mentioned this, but The Register reviewed the 9300:
http://www.theregister.com/2005/03/04/nokia_9300_review/
(address is manually typed, but hopefully correct!)

The first page is rather (unnecessarily IMHO) scathing, and is from a Psion point of view.  But the second page is much more balanced, with the main oddity being a complaint about the GUI looking dated (!).  The reviewer has obviously fallen in love with the 7710's interface, which is apparently alpha-blended (which might explain the Russian reviewer's complaint about the slow GUI speed of the 7710?).

After filtering the obviously silly/biased complaints, I'd summarise by saying that it is a generally very positive review, but with several worrying observations:

1. The Opera-based web browser renders pages slowly & VERY badly. :(((
2. MP3 player does not (always?) recognise ID3 tags.  Surely not?!?
3. VERY slow in adding new contacts.  (Also reported by Russian review)
4. Lack of vibrating alert. (I already knew this)
5. Unnecessarily limited S40 interface when closed, particularly missing predictive text.  (Reported by others)

Could Steve Litchfield, Martin Maxwell, etc comment on the first 3 issues?

Thanks
---
Chris Handley

Subject: 9500 with GPS?

I am again considering purchasing a Nokia 9500.

Has anyone any experience of using this with GPS?

What accessories and software do they use?

Is it possible to connect to a Garmin 12XL?

Where can I get GPS maps for the Jungfrau region of Switzerland where we are going in June?

Many thanks,
Martin

Subject: Halliwell's MovieGuide Upgrade.sis wanted

Hi,

By now, everybody should know that I had (such a painfull task) to restaure my PalmTop apps
This time I'll keep a backup of each freshly installed .app so as to overlook ;-) the :-[ unpleasant  "Reinstall from the original CD"

I succeeded in reinstalling Halliwell's Movies Guide v1.00 but
I miss the .sis needed to upgrade to v1.n

Any help will be given my best...
regards
Jack

Hi all,

check out the 'Stowaway' bluetooth keyboard from

www.thinkoutside.com it works with just about anything bluetooth.

It's excellent and stopped this ex-psioneer chucking his
p800 in the bin.

only joking (ish)

Re.: Rechargeables - Right, but why not invent a small unit to charge a phone with just that, AA or AAA batteries ? Or a small unit to run a phone from AA or AAA batteries in case of need ?  At a reasonable price who would not have such a security in your pocket ?

Answer to: Arabbitte

Re.: P910i connection problems - Since I got my phone half a year ago it happened to me once only, and than I solved it by taking it out of the craddle and putting it back in a few times. Unfortunately you cannot read the link you gave us as you have to log-in first as a member. Can you let us know what forum it was on and what the subject name was ?

Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re.: Message Storer - Ok, "expensive" is a relative matter of course. Could you expand a little and tell us how much about you spend per month on GPRS costs ?

I know I would...
What if each of us using Phoneman would PayPal the programmer some preestablished amount, so that the software remain free for anyone without
any of unpaid work? Is this or a similar idea reasonable?

And what if we established a mutual fund for such purposes? Maybe a it would raise a few hundred Euros, it wouldn't be real payment, but it would at
least cover some costs... Sorry if this is in any way inappropriate, I was
just wondering...

best,

vlad

Subject: Which Opera?

I just noticed that the Psion disk that came with my Mbook includes a trial version of Opera 5.14. whereas the version on thh Mbook is 3.62 Release 104. I recall reading something about the difference in this list at some point quite some time ago - and am wondering if there are good reasons not to install 5.14 in place of 3.62.  Can anyone who has used both instruct me about this?

Subject: *** SPAM *** AA and AAA Rechargeables

<As I am sure you know, there have been great strides forward in rechargeable battery technology.  It is now hard to imagine a world without these rechargeables.  Of course, AA or AAA makes it convenient but could end up with products that are too large unless the battery adjusts to the footprint of the product - which to me makes more sense than having to stick to AA or AAA rechargeables - on condition that the device manufacturer uses good quality rechargeables and builds a proper charging circuit.
I'd certainly hate to see my mobile phone and my PDA go up in size just to accommodate AAA cells.>

Me neither - I'd hate to see the clean lines of my 9500 spoilt by a lumpy housing to take AA cells.  It wasn't so many years ago I remember the debate on whether it was worth having colour screens on Psions....now almost every device seems to have one.  How things have changed!  Just to show how battery efficiency has improved (or maybe it's just the device's power efficiency) I actually deliberately allowed my beautifully colour screened 9500 to run from fully charged to fully discharged to test out its battery staying power.  Starting with a full charge on Sunday evening ready for the working week my device has still got one bar left on the battery display now (it's now 11pm on Thursday).  Typical daily usage - phone on standby from 8am to 11pm, about 1 hour's PDA usage per day, connected to a headset via bluetooth all day, about 10 minute's of calls daily.  Now 4 days of that sort of usage is good by anyone's standards.  I know I can take it away with me for a full weekend without having to worry at all - take a spare battery and I can go away on holiday for a week and still have power to spare.

Dear Prar,
>I sent an email to <uid_sw [at] software.psion.com> to get a uid for a program and 4 days leter I received a bounce message telling me
>"Your message was not delivered within 4 days and 0 hours. Host software.psion.com is not responding."
>Is there another way of getting a UID I should be using?

The central registrar of UIDs was transferred to Symbian long time ago (1998 ??).
Since then, Symbian/EPOC UIDs are registered in a central database owned by Symbian.
Below I have pasted some key information from: http://www.symbian.com/developer/techlib/papers/tn_uid/uidinfo.html Ordering UIDs Please email<address truncated>with the subject 'UID Request'. Also ensure that you submit the following information:
* Your name or program name (whichever you prefer)
* Your Email address
* How many UIDs you require.
You will be assigned a range of ten UIDs. If you require more then please give your reason for requiring more.
Kind regards Martin Maxwell Singapore

Subject: 7710 again...
Answer to: Stéphane Sage Dear Stephane,
Thanks for information and links!
>Finally I read on allaboutsymbian forum that some Series 80 programs could run on the 7710: how can that be (perhaps without
>implementation of the tactile screen) ? In that case, we can imagine Series5 programs could be "adapted" to run under Series 90...
I have not heard about this, but then again, Series 90 is actually based on Series 80. They both belong to the "Crystal" device family. And they're both using Symbian v7s (except the older Series 80 which is using Symbian v6.0). So it's not impossible that *some* applications would work. Series 5 programs could easily be ported to Series 90 with it's landscape touchscreen, which is the first for a Symbian device since the netPad. For OPL programmers, Series 90 might as well spell the revival of the venerable Toolbar.
Kind regards
