Subject: Symbian and Microsoft news
I just came across the following article at PDAGeek (http://www.geek.com/news/geeknews/2005Mar/bpd20050323029699.htm):
"Symbian announced Tuesday that it has licensed the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync. Symbian will use the license to develop a plug-in for its Symbian OS messaging architecture. The new ActiveSync plug-in will give Symbian-based devices the ability to perform over-the-air synchronization of PIM information from Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. Once the plug-in is developed, Symbian will make it available to all Symbian OS licensees. It will be up to the licensees to then implement direct synchronization using the plug-in. Symbian currently supports other PIM synchronization technologies, including BlackBerry Connect and the Open Mobile Alliance Data Synchronization protocol. Read more from the Symbian press release."
The Symbian press release can be found here:

Cheers, Ian.

Re.: Where are my Outlook Notes??? - AFAIK there is no standard program for Notes on the Psion. I do remember there were third party software programs like "sticky notes" or something like that, and there was also the program DCP that allows you to enter notes on the main screen. Search around a little, maybe start at www.pscience5.net.

Hello Itamar, thanks for your suggestion...
One problem with having dual devices (like the Netbook & Revo which I use) is the hassle of synchronisation (and backing-up of those things which aren't synchronised). Although EpocSync does a wonderful job, it still isn't true synchronisation, so that there are sharing limitations, and to be honest it has become one hassle I'd really rather do without.
Thus if I replace my current set-up, I'm afraid that I wouldn't be keen on your suggestion of dual devices, particularly as they aren't file-compatible for things like Contacts, Agenda, Word, etc. :-( .
OTOH, if both devices were completely file-compatible, could share storage cards (MMC?), and access some of each-other's functionality by bluetooth, then I'd be very interested, because it would mean that I would get the full advantages of both form-factors, and almost no compromises. Unfortunately for me, Psion aren't interested in producing the (mythical) Symbian Netbook PRO.
Also, I feel that simply not synchronising two devices isn't an option, because that would mean I must always be carrying both devices around - unless I know exactly what I'm going to be doing, and all the necessary data happens to be on one device...

Neither do I! I had thought it was obvious, but apparently not, that my post was aimed at those people who haven't seriously consider ANY modern replacement for ANY of their Psion devices. For a few people, I am sure that a Psion is *still* the best compromise available. Nor was I intending to suggest that a Nokia Communicator was the best Psion replacement for everybody, although I think it could be for many people.

Anyone waiting for a mythical 'ideal' Psion replacement to be produced would do well to consider how long the Nokia Communicators (from 9200 onwards) have been around, and the fact that they still don't have all the software that anyone could ever want. I.E. It will take a long time after any new device is released, before there is a good chance of there being software available that will do what you want - unless of course the device is backwards compatible with older devices (as the 9500 is with the 9200).

Itamar,

Many thanks for your help. If we're referring to the same gentleman, from
his posts, I believe he was almost there IR-wise, but couldn't receive on his
3c. IRSend, he mused, seemed to be a program only to send to a Series 5. But I never found out for certain. I sent an inquiring e-mail to Jim Pollock, but haven't heard back.
Have you ever used IRSend?
Thanks,
Jake

Subject: Relative Dimensions
Hi all,
still researching my Revo replacements in case I don't gel with the Treo, I decided to check the dimensions of the new communicators compared to the Revo and was amazed to see that the 9500 which I'd assumed was a bit of a brick, is actually smaller than the Revo.
Psion Revo = 157*79*17mm
Nokia 9500 = 148*57*24mm
I used to carry my Revo around with me just about everywhere without a second thought except when coat less in the summer.
Hmm, more food for thought...

Mike Dyer.
