Dear Itamar,
<< What I am trying to say is that science should stay science and

Well ... you write a bit later in your message "Unfortunately I don't
have the facts available like you to support my opinion". Which is
rather strange as this isn't the first time that this subject has
been tackled. Which makes me wonder whether I'll ever see you
supporting what you write about Darwin's theory of evolution by
supplying factual information, explanations, etc. I'm very sorry,
Itamar, but I think it's very inappropriate for you to berate science
when it comes to the publication of facts when you show no
inclination to come up with any fact yourself. It's also a punch
below the belt to those who have spent quite some time and effort to
dig up the facts and to explain why some of the ideas you have about
Darwin's theory don't follow from the theory itself. They have to
meet a requirement - stick to the facts - which apparently doesn't
apply to you. That's no way to hold a discussion, Itamar.

Jim,

<<I'm on a PC and use a free email program called Pegasus-->>
<<-- plus viruses can't use Pegasus to send email because they are designed to work with Microsoft products -- an extra protection just in case something slips by Norton.>>
Does this ring true??? I've always thought an email app was an overlay onto the operating system and therefore as subject to viruses as the operating system. Comments???>>>
Email clients are just applications like any other. Viruses which use email to propogate themselves *tend* to look for the Outlook (Express) or Windows Address Book, mainly because these are of a known format and are usually in known, predefined locations. Also, Outlook was previously extremely insecure, although many of its default settings have been changed to make it harder for viruses to run or be triggered by a user. Any deviation from using standard MS products will offer some improvement in security, although nothing beats using a good AV program.
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: Linking 5mx and Nokia 6610
Ouch! No replies at all to my previous query. Is there really no one out there taking a 5mx online via a 6610? (Even if you're not with the O2 network, I'd still like to hear from you!)
____
Previous message:
Going online with a 5mx via a Nokia 6610 on O2 network using GPRS and PAYG
Can anyone give me the settings for this combo? I'm getting tired of fiddling!
I can access the Web via GPRS on the Nokia alone, using pay-as-you-go.
The Psion talks to the phone OK. Using the 5mx I succeed in reaching just one Website - pda.o2.co.uk. But I can't connect to any other site whatever. What happens is that the 5mx (using Web) displays "Waiting for reply from host" and sticks there.
I've been trying many different settings - there doesn't seem much point in my quoting them now if someone out there has settings that work.

Hi Folks,
Chris (Malcolm), for many reasons I don’t want to switch from my 5mx either - and I’ve got a spare too. If both go west my 3c will take over. For most of my purposes it’s nearly as good.
If your screen cable has gone, Paul Wright (http://www.psionflexi.co.uk/) has a very good reputation partly because he uses cables *better* than Psion’s originals.
If you need anything else done I haven’t heard of anyone better that Pinnock Organiser Services (http://www.posltd.com/). They’ve done me proud.
Happy days,
Phil.

Wow - yes, that is just the sort of thing I am looking for. What a neat looking unit - built-in FM radio too! Thanks for the info Chris.

<Kevin, make sure you're not converting WMA or MP3 to Ogg Vorbis. Always encode from an uncompressed source such as a CD. Otherwise the quality will be degraded as you're encoding artefacts from the other compression scheme! 8-)>
Oops! That's exactly what I had done although the sound quality didn't seem too bad but I guess the degraded sound still sounded OK due to the limitations of the 9500's built-in speaker (good as it is). I had converted WMA files encoded at 128kbs to Ogg Vorbis files at 64kbs. I haven't tried using stereo headphones yet with my 9500 but I'd guess I'd notice the
reduced quality if I had been able to use them.
Incidentally, I also read with interest your article on cases for the 9500 and already had a CNT-24 case I used with my previous 9210 but wanted a luxury case which would allow use of the 9500 in situ. I received the 9500 Covertec case in luxury black nappa leather yesterday and I am very
impressed with the quality. I don't find the magnetic catches particularly weak but I do feel they could be stronger. Certainly that silly protusion out of the back of the case for the belt holding system you mentioned is bad design, stopping one from using the case with the PDA inside on a flat surface and I feel it does rather spoil an otherwise excellent case.

Subject: Re: Pegasus Email
I have been using Pegasus Email client on my childrens PC for over 5 years to minimize their chance of virus infection. It is free and supports multiple users and does avoid many of the risks associated with Outlook Express. I also use Grisoft AVG anti virus - also free, which has a mail plugin for Pegasus, together they make a free and extremly effective antivirus solution for a Windows PC.
Both packages are availabel for Win98, Win2K and WinXP. I am not affiliated - just a happy user!

I emailed Thomas Ullrich to see if there is an English version of his site. It looks like a great site. He said that there isn't one. Do we have a site that is similar to his with that kind of good info on it???

Subject: Pegasus
Hi Folks,
Jim (Watson-Gove), as far as I’m aware, eMail programs are just programs. If they have a built-in virus scanner or built-in integrity checks then it will be difficult for a virus to infect them. If, in addition, they will *only* accept keyboard input the viruses can’t use them.
But, as I understand it (I’ve never had a computer virus - I’m very careful) few such viruses use eMail programs, just the internet services the OS supplies.
Perhaps Pegasus has a built-in virus scanner and built-in integrity checks but any system (though possibly not ER 1-5 and SIBO) still needs a proper AV suite - I use Norton on my Mac and keep my PC clean using that.
So, even though I don’t think Pegasus is immune to viruses, that’s irrelevant. Even if true, it doesn’t even add to a proper AV strategy but might, sadly, lead some people into a false sense of security.
But not you, Jim!.
Happy days,
Phil.
