Subject: Pegasus E-Mail[Scanned]

I thought that I would have a try at explaining how computers get
viruses as some people on the digest appear to be unsure how this
happens.

Viruses exploit weeknesses in the e-mail application or the underlying
operating system, so have to be targeted at a particular e-mail
application or operating system, most virus writers target Microsoft
Windows, Outlook & Outlook Express.

Using the Pegasus or other non Microsoft e-mail application will prevent
any virus that depends on a M$ e-mail bug, for example those that resend
the virus to all the e-mail addresses in your M$ address book. It should
also stop those viruses that depend on a M$ e-mail bug to automatically
extract the virus from the e-mail & store it in your computer.

Every user of the computer still have to be vigilant by making sure that
they do not accidentally open such an e-mail & activate the virus, it is
not always easy to identify e-mails containing a virus.

Everyone should use an upto-date virus checker preferably one that
automatically updates it'self, using a non M$ e-mail system is a very
poor second best unless you are using a non M$ operating system such as
Linux or EPOC.

I practice what I preach but I have still been infected on 2 occasions
both from infected web sites, got one of them after installing Windows &
before I could download the anti-virus package, the other when
downloading a BIOS update!

Remember you can still get a virus from a number of other sources
including floppy disks CD-ROMs, Flash cards & USB memory sticks.

Hope this helps explain how viruses infect your computer, just off to
Kos for a couple of weeks.

Mike

Subject: Subject: Rolf Brunsting's pedantic ramblings

I have to say I'm begining to get really freaked out by Rolf's pedantic ramblings. 25 days after Itamar wrote on Evolution, Rolf's response appears. There are 2 problems with this: First, I though we had all agreed to leave this subject drop as it has no real relevance in this digest. Second, what's wrong with responding when a post first appears? If you find yourself in a position that you can't, then it's probably best to drop it - otherwise people get confused. This would be especially true for somebody working as an engineer. And while we are on the subject of responses, what's wrong with being nice? Most engineers I meet are very pleasant people. Apart from some BOFH, but then they were probably not fully qualified.

Reading Rolf's response to something written 25 days ago is an experience that goes beyond pain. And yes, I know I always have the option of just ignoring Rolf's posts, but I find myself getting drawn in. It must be the masochist in me.

Comments welcome (but only before the end of June)

Just how lacking in appropriate grey matter are you? You must be a troll!!! If you have a problem with your TAB key, then just go and get the thing fixed! If you had more than 2 brain cells to rub together you would already know this. If you are too stupid to find a place that can fix them, then just go and fix it yourself. Of course, you are probably too stupid and troll-like for this to be a viable option! What about warranty? Can you not just send it back and get a new one?

If you were an engineer like me who researches things in great detail, you would also know how to fix this yourself. In the last 2156 days, I have worked on a cunning plan that only glorious - and fully certified - engineers like me could dream up. Because I am so clever I understand really hard stuff like Darwin's theory of evolution. And because I really understand this, I know what in these last 308 weeks, evolution has solved your problem. So stop snivelling you cerebrally-challenged, supernatural, cave-living, dwarf and go out and buy a Nokia 9300.

Subject: Monkeys.

Hi Folks,

I don’t think Itamar’s failing to provide authorities, scientific or otherwise, can affect the validity of his opinions. A non-scientific justification of evolutionary opinion was provided in 1925 in the “Scopes Monkey Trial”, where creationism was shown not to be *necessarily* inconsistent with evolution (by Clarence Darrow).

The film based on it is worth seeing. It’s called “Inherit the Wind” and stars Spencer Tracy, Frederic March and Gene Kelly.

’sterrific!

But the universe could have evolved from nothing. If exactly 50% of the energy in the universe can be considered as negative and the rest as positive then the total must be nothing. As the universe appears to be expanding it might have begun as a point of no dimension - nothing.

A simple analogy: adding -1 to +1 results in nothing.

This begs the question of why nothing is so unstable as to split!

(Zero: zero is exactly equivalent to nothing - and it’s not a number, it’s a concept. That’s why dividing by zero produces nonsense. The symbol is used as a placeholder and can sometimes be treated as a number but only where logic permits. Euclid understood!)

Happy days,
Phil.

and no future."

Subject: Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k+Fax and Comms problem (possibly solved)

Thanks for your advice Itamar and Jack re. initiation settings for the Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k+Fax.  I've now got it working.

Actually, that's a lie: I've now got ANOTHER Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k+Fax working!  I bought another Gold Card on eBay for just under 10 GBP and this one works a treat.  I've checked them both in the Comms app. and this is what I get:

OLD Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k+Fax

> ati3
OK

NEW Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k+Fax

> ati3
RA8R V.8.27,089 V1.24,189

I'm guessing that the old card is broken!

=== COMMS ===
An interesting thing, that I wonder if anyone can shed any light on.  In the Comms app. whenever I type anything I get two of the same character echoed on the screen, so in the example above I actually see

aattii33

instead of

ati3

Any thoughts on why this is happening? ... actually, I've just had a fiddle with settings in the Tools menu and it seems that if I untick "Local echo" in the Translate codes... (Ctrl+Q) dialog this fixes the problem.  Is that my solution, or just a temporary answer?

Thanks again,

Gareth

Subject: OFFER: Psion Dacom Gold Cards - V34 and 56k (possibly broken)

Further to my last post, about the "Psion Dacom Gold Card 56k+Fax" I now have two Gold Cards surplus to requirements:

* 1 x V34+Fax - no cable

* 1 x 56k+Fax - possibly broken, with cable and PhoneTools software on 3.5? disk. (I also have the “Gold Card Global V.90 Disks” - Utilities Disk and Win95/98/NT Drivers, if you also want a copy of these on 3.5? or CDROM.

Free to a good home, or homes.  If you want them (and/or think you can fix the 56k) you can have them.

I've added an article to my blog about this (with an image), so if you want it or check to see if they are still available just check this blog page:

Hi, Chris,

I'm unqualified to answer this in every way, but since you're having a hard time gathering responses, I thought I'd try.

I connect a Mako via a Nokia 6100 via GPRS, and the connection is hit or miss--my ISP's fault, not my machines.  Perhaps the same charge can be leveled at your ISP.  I assume you're following Mike McConnell's GPRS connections (if
not, check your settings against his on his website).

My suggestion is dropping the IR connection down to 57000bps--if you're connected to one site, but can't connect to another, you may be cluttering the lines with too much information too fast.

Subject: USA netBook traveling to Sweden

My netBook and I are going to Sweden in about two weeks. I have two power supplies, or "mains" I think they say on the other side of the pond. One is a Psion labeled transformer integrated into the wall wart plug made perhaps by Egston that says IN: 100 - 240V / 550 mA / 50-60 Hz. It has three terminals sticking out of it, well really only two are terminals, I am pretty sure the top single one is just plastic. They look like this

      |
__     __

The other one is more like a laptop brick from Cincon Electronics. It has a plug with just two round prongs sticking out. It says Input: 100 - 240 V 1.0A 50-60 Hz

Oh, I also have 3 Sunpower wall wart plug transformers that came with my Malaybooks that have the same style plug as the Psion version above but which are AC IN: 200 -240V, 1A, 50-60 Hz

Which transformer should I bring with me and will I need a plug adapter? (and does anyone need one of those Sunpower jobs)

Also we are going to Goteborg, Vanersborg, Mellerud, Rattvik, and other parts of the Swedish hinterlands. Anyone think WiFi will be available along the way? If I need to check and send email, how else can I do it? I have a modem card too, although I have been unsuccessful in connecting to the Internet with it when I have to use a phonecard. Can't seem to get the timing just right for the modem to connect.

I know I should just take a dang vacation, but I am a very solo practitioner with no staff, so this is the price I pay for "freedom."

We are going to see where are forebears came from not so long ago. I am especially excited about an acquaduct and canal system somewhere up there.
My wife and I rented a canal boat for two weeks in Wales several years ago and have never had a more memorable and enjoyable experience in our combined 100 plus years on this earth!

Re: Linking 5mx and Nokia 6610

I travel to Belfast for a couple of weeks out of the year and have a pay-as-you-go O2 account that I picked up about three years ago.

I can't help you with specifics regarding your phone but I do know that O2 told me that the only connection available through the pay-as-you-go service is WAP. There is no way to connect to the Internet through an external device nor is there any way to browse the web or collect email, unless it is through their WAP portal.

To be fair, I haven't used it in almost a year so things might have changed. If you do find that you can connect your 5mx through GPRS on your pay-as-you-go O2 account, please let me know. It would indeed be handy.

Dear All

First off, many thanks for all the comments, all were very helpful.

In the end I got a Palm Lifedrive, with a wireless infrared keyboard.

Reasoning in the end was dominated by the lack of Symbian compatibility with my Mac.

If people are interested, will write up a mini-review after about a month and let you know how I'm getting on, let me know.

Again, Many Thanks, Ian

Answer to: Rolf Brunsting

Re.: Evolution - Well, no offense was meant and no offense taken either. My "knowledge" comes from reading of many articles and parts of books about this subject, but I am just not one who has got these details what I read where and when at my fingertips. Also, I don't think I berated science, I am more trying to say that these theories have not been proven beyond doubt either and that other theories can co-exist with science as well as could be correct. Besides that you will also have to understand that some of the sources were written in a language you will not be able to read, Hebrew. Anyhow, I think there is a strong feeling amongst digest readers not to continue discussing the evolution, and I would like to respect that. Currently we are also preparing a wedding of our son in August and I have little time to start finding the sources. Without promissing I will try and get back to this, maybe in a private email, in the 4th quarter of 2005.

Answer to: Jack

Re.: Psion Dacom Gold Card - Thanks for that one Jack, but while it does make quite a horrible noise, at least it confirms to me it is working that way :-)

Subject: Wi Fi on 7book

I know that this has been brought up about a hundred times, but I am going to bring it up again because I never did get it to work.  I have a Series 7 with the Netbook module and latest OS.  I have tried before to get my Netbook or 7book to work with my wireless network.  Some folk were very patient with me.  I have been doing Psion stuff for about ten years and this is the first time that I can't eventually figure how to get something to work.  I have the Buffalo Air Station card # WLI-PCM-L11GP.  I have a wireless network working and my laptop works fine on it.  The router is a D-Link.  Just looking for some handholding.  If someone has a easy step-by-step procedure for each screen to get it working.  I would even call someone if I really need to so that I can walk through it.  Unless for some reason my machines are not capable of Wi Fi.  It would be nice to get my Psion working as it's a bit smaller and more convenient to use.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bobbyr
