Subject: 5mx Repairs
To add to the repairs postings I am pleased to testify to the effiency of psionflex screen cable repairs.
My 5mx was turned around in a couple of weeks and is happily back in my briefcase.
Many thanks to Paul Wright, there's no way that I could have undertaken this myself.

'Puzzled' would also describe my reaction, along with 'offensive' and 'inappropriate'. There is no place for this kind of personal abuse on this or any other list.

For a while I was puzzled by this post, until looking at it closer I
suddenly realised who it was by and why:

In case some people are even slower on the uptake than me (statistically
there ought to be a few!), I'll point out that Alan Rabbitte must have
appended it to his post, presumably to parody (how he saw) Rolf B behaved
on the Digest.
While I can understand the point he is trying to make, I doubt that I am
the only subscriber who thinks this isn't appropriate behaviour for the
Digest. Perhaps some others can post whether they think this sort of post
is acceptable or not? I'm sure that Itamar would appreciate it, since he
doesn't like to act as a dictator on the Digest.
Personally I think that Alan should apologise, if only to avoid a flamewar (not that I think Rolf will take the bait), particularly since the
Evolutions & Morality of Software errr arguments have only just abated...

Subject: Nokia 9500 - imprting Vcard file
Hi,
I have a .vcf file with a number of contacts in it. I used PC Suite to try and update the contacts on the 9500, but after a while it did, but only the first one in the file. There are about 50 entries in the .vcf file. How do I transfer the file to the 9500 and get the additions into Contacts?

Nice detective work Chris.
I hadn't figured it out, but on re-reading the post I think you may be right. Like you, while I understand the point, I think it is not suitable way of making the point
However much we get fed up of some members postings, I think we want to keep the digest from being deliberately offensive. (I too get fed up of RB ;- )
...and to go even more off topic ...., I too would be interested in hearing about the Palm Lifedrive, but I appreciate it is not a Psion!

Hello all,
I thought it was worth giving an update on my proposal to move the above discussions (aka scientific heresy) elsewhere:
I have only recieved two emails expressing an interest, and surprisingly neither of those was from Rolf B! Given that the Digest has 700+ subscribers, obviously there's no point in mentioning any scientific issues again on the Digest.
(However, if anyone here has a passing interest in science, then I still strongly recommend occasionally picking-up a copy of the weekly New Scientist magazine - or even just checking out some of the articles on their web site for free!)

P.S. You may be surprised to see that I am actually letting Rolf have the last say on the subject of Evolution! :-) To be honest, that's mainly because I have delayed reading his last couple of posts on the subject until I was ready to write a reply, and of course the opportunity to reply to his last post hasn't ever surfaced...

Subject: Re: The Digest V1 # 758_8 - Personal Abuse, trolls, PsiXpda etc
I've kept quiet, watching the digest and, occasionally enjoying the banter. However, I feel saddened that it seems to be veering once again into a less than objective argument forum.
I don't consider the parody of Rolf's writing to be particularly abusive - indeed, it surely is for Rolf to decide, as I am sure he will do in
his own way (perhaps by not rising to the bait?). To have one's style imitated and commented upon surely is testament to the strength of
effect Rolf's writing can have on people. Whilst I certainly don't agree with everything Rolf comments upon, I do recognise that freedom of
speech is a priviledge and also that, once open to others, is bound to invite comparison, criticism and challenge. By the same token, I cannot see why a little parody (unsubtle though it was) is considered worse
than some of the things that have been accepted in the past on the digest. I am no scientist, but I actually have enjoyed reading the controversial ramblings/thoughts/opinions/expressions of all the digest.
Whether we like it or not, we need challenging thinkers like Rolf to question us. Rolf, we know, is strong enough to defend himself and also to take us forward as he has an ability to provoke further responses.
I do feel though that the digest must stay objective and avoid censorship - within the bounds of abusive and offensive language. The parody of Rolf was perhaps not the subtlest, nor the cleverest of techniques, but was only a parody. If we get on our high horses again we perhaps are in danger of ruining the open nature of the digest. Occasionally humour can be misplaced, but in the light of the (numerous) long-running debates that we have been privy to, I would consider the parody to be more of a slight error of judgement, rather than personal abuse.
As I said, I am sure Rolf will choose how he responds - but let's not make others feel they can't make comments, or supress too many attempts at individuality. (It's happened before here and perhaps lost a few members because of it).
On a more Psion-orientated note, I wonder if the PsiXpda project (as far as I can see mainly a 5MXPro clone) is likely to lead to a Netbook project. Personally, I cannot see the Xpda selling strongly if it offers no more up to date features (at least USB connectivity). After this
long, the only good thing you can say is that the 5MX is still being made in some form and therefore, as there is little to directly replace it, will soldier on for longer. However, perhaps we could have hoped for
something to really bring us into this century, perhaps combining the best features of the Revo, 3mx, 5mx and 7/Netbook in a package that
would be a genuine upgrade rather than a replacement.
However, despite this, it is the software community for ER5 that is respnsible for the longevity of the Psions in general. The hardware was arguably ahead of its time at first, and now is faced with greater competition from the techno-accessory brigade, as, 5 years on, the rest of the world have cottoned on to PDAs (albeit mainly sans keyboard). But the software does most of what the more contemporary devices, and as CF storage has dropped in price and increased capacity, then so has the usefulness of the Psion as a PDA.
Personally, I fear that the PsiXpda is not really an evolution (nor a revolution any more). I wonder why POSltd have not attempted to ensure a clear difference between this product and the 5MXPro. (Although at least they haven't painted it a new metallic and called it a limited edition! Mind you, I wouldn't mind a bit of netbook-style leather wrapped arounf
a 5). Perhaps the accompanying software might make up for it and be a progression from PsiWin2.3.3? Opera, Email? Others more knowledgeable than I do inform me that Opera is as good as it can be on the current hardware. Shame.
Apple are being clever at the moment. Their release of news of hardware shift is paving the way for a whole new generation of macs based upon Intel processors, with implications for software designers and users - some of which will only be felt in a year or so's time. Unfortunately,
we have little indication as to where PsiXpda and its OS is heading. Consequently, the software designers are abandoning the platform.
I do have most of what I need on my Psions - even HTML editor, basic SMS, phone manager, database. I'd love things to be quicker these days
on my 5MX series and more connected (WiFi) on it - I'd even accept a larger (rechargeable) battery docking station for the sake of having a netbook-like speed on the 5. I can live without a colour screen I guess, but, as a consumer, can only justify a purchase of new kit if it takes
me forward. I could buy a PsiXpda as a spare, but many of us already have got spares tucked in drawers. With all manner of more powerful and capcious bluetooth alternatives with more up to date software and add-on keyboards available, what hope is there for the PsiXpda, classic design though it is?
There is no place for this kind of personal abuse on
> this or any other list.

Hello Chris,
> I have only recieved two emails expressing an interest,
I am not surprised. This thread obviously bored not only me. I was skipping these posts since several weeks.
This is not because I am not interested in science. I like science. But as mentioned by others, I subscribed to this digest to hear news and stories about using Psion and Symbian computers.
>obviously there's no point in mentioning any scientific issues again on the Digest.
No, I do like these off topic mails here and then, but sometimes they become way too lengthy. (The threads and the mails themself.)
By the way, thank you for the idea with the New Scientist magazine.

Answer to: Mike Robins
Re.: Palm Lifedrive - Some time ago it was discussed that we will allow the experiences of our readers with other machines in the digest as sooner or later we all might have to make a decision whiether to migrate from our EPOC machines to Symbian or others. So while not directly EPOC or Symbian in contents, it is certainly of interest to most readers.

Answer to: Bob
Re.: Wi Fi on 7book - You might have the wrong card. In digest 523 someone wrote he was using the "Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP-3 card" which is meant to be compatible with the Psion. In digst 676 it was written that you need OS version 158 to use the wifi connection so make sure you have that one. If not, apparently you can download it for free, although I don't know from which website. Hopefully this helps.

Subject: Response to 5MX TAB key problem, Psion Dacom Gold Card,
Answer to: Chris S Handley & Brendon
Re.: Response to 5MX TAB key problem - Looking even further, you can see the message was quoted from the up5s digest and not The Digest which did not exist back in 1999. We will indeed continue not to censor the digest, but would certainly appreciate if everybody could do their best to avoid the type of messages Chris refered to in his answer. This is a multi culture, multi language and multi country digest. We are all different and let's try and keep it nice and respect our differences (and let's not start a lengthy discussion about this IMHO). Brendon, we can all voice our opinions but Rolf has a right to send in messages just like any other subscriber to the digest. If you don't like his answers, skip them.

Re.: Psion Dacom Gold Card - Tiscali is probably the reason you can't use MochaPPP. I use Eclipse and MochaPPP works without any problems. However, since I have a wireless network at home I don't need it anymore.
