Subject: Off-Topic: Palm Woes
I have learned a lot over the last 48 hours about the so-called simplicity of the Palm platform. Having upgraded my Tungsten T5 (replacement for years of Psion use) to v1.1 firmware I found that various applications just failed to work or went back to unregistered state. Admittedly I do make a rod for my own back by trying to sync the machine to a work Wintel box and a home Mac (but not yet Mactel) box. When I tried to use the Mac to restore things it just installed a much earlier configuration of the system with apps that had long been deleted. In the end it required a hard reset with all the associated data loss to sort out.
Thankfully I am obsessive about backups so I also run an application to copy internal data to SD card. This was invaluable in sorting out my most important data i.e Agenda and Contacts equivalents.
The thing that struck me most, as it always does, is that the single biggest failing of the Palm OS is the fuzzy space that contains user files and system files. There is no clear organisation of files within internal memory and while this may have worked in the mid-90's the system is now so much more complicated, with Datebook enhancement, office apps and alternative launchers etc. I have restored my data but odd things happened such as duplicate entries and changed category settings.
I am now left with a degree of uncertainty about the integrity of my data and this is something that would NEVER have happened on a Psion, where user land was always separate from the system. In those 10+ years of Psion use I was able to maintain an Agenda file through changes of hardware from a 3a through to a netBook and associated OS build changes on that machine. I don't regret moving from Psion for a minute because, for users only interested in a PDA, the platform has no future. It does make me think that Palm desperately needs to make a technology leap forward in their moves to either Cobalt or Linux. Now where can I buy a Zarus?
Regards,
Steve Hodgson

I'd try a regular eBay search. But download is not feasible because it's a large data set if I remember correctly.

>Re.: Evolution - Thanks for the link, interesting reading indeed. Let me (without starting a full discussion) point out two statements in the answers I find interesting : >"... amino acids, and other building blocks of life COULD have formed and organized themselves into self-replicating, self-sustaing units ...". And yet, they also coud NOT have done so. >" But even if life on earth turned out to have a nonevolutionary origin (for instance, if aliens introduced the first cells billions of years ago) ...". Aliens, or maybe a God ?
>I still think the answers are to be found in co-existence between science and religion as opposed to confrontation. There exists a very interesting book in this field called "Challenge" that discusses this matter and how the two can be reconciled. I am at work and will give details next time. >

Subject: Experiences with YData
Hi folks,
I would like to tell you about my experiences with YData. May be it's of interest for other 9500 user.
I had to convert more than 50 data files from my Psion 5 mx. Unfortunately the converting process is not so easy.
YData requires CSV files for importing. Unfortunately the form of them is absolutely determined: text delimiter = ", field separator = comma, record separator = linefeed.
As the data files on the Psion can contain commas (i.e. German decimal separator) and line feeds inside the fields, you cannot convert the Psion data files directly into the needed CSV form.
So I solved this problem by the following way:
- export the files on the Psion with { as text delimiter, with } as field separator and ] as record separator
- copy the new file to the PC
- replace the characters by e.g. Winword (" to space, comma to dot, linefeed to / , { to ", } to comma, ] to linefeed)
- save als text file with Unicode characters
- copy to the Nokia 9500
- create a new template in YData
- import from the CSV file.
May be there is a better solution? If so, please let me know.
