Subject: Ydata vs RMRdata

Answer to: Lord Kimberley

John,

I have just started using YData & so far I've been quite impressed.  It does seem to be much simpler than RMRData looks to be (I've not actually used RMRData, but I have given the manual a quick run through) & is a closer match to the functionality of the Psion 'Data' program.  Like 'Data', it has an elegant simlicity, which I like.  It works in a similar way, but unlike 'Data' you have to create (or use pre-defined) templates which define the field structure of the database.

YData doesn't have any clever features like encryption, so if you want to use it to store passwords, I can strongly recommend you encrypt the file using the excellent FreeCrypt utility by Malcolm Bryant.  There's no 9500 version but the 9200 version works fine on the 9500.

While RMRData is designed to be a sort of central repository for all your database storage & organisation needs, YData works in the traditional EPOC/Symbian document centric way.  You can create any number of YData files, placing them anywhere in the filesystem & you can have many of them open at once (memory permitting).

There are a couple of niggles though.  One is searching; You can search dynamically, like the built-in 'Contacts' program, by just typing in the search string.  However, unlike 'Contacts', this only searches the 'key' field & the search string is anchored to the start of the field.  This makes this feature rather useless.  But at least there is a separate 'Find' function, which can search either a single field or all fields & the search string can appear anywhere within the field(s).

Also, it does behave strangely when it runs out of memory & you can't zoom the display.

Hope this Helps,
Simon Jeffree

An application may be stuck. Try killing the current app using Shift+Ctrl+Fn+K.  Failing that, a soft or hard reset may be required.

Dear Colin Messer,

Thanks for the kind reply. Tried Shift+Ctrl+Fn+K, no response. What is soft and hard reset? Is it something I can try? The two "pin-holes" numbered 1 and 2 are for this? How do I go about it?

Thanks in advance

Re.: p910-Outlook synchronizing problems - When I started using my P910 I also tried to synchronise with outlook (just to check how it works) and had similar problems. I have given up a long time ago to try and synchronise different platform diaries with each other. I suppose the lack of uniformity makes it extremely hard to write a perfect program for this. Now had there been an industry standard for diaries it woud have been different .... <G>.

Answer to Nils Langeland:

Nils,

sorry I cannot help, other than saying that I had the same problem when synching my MC 218 (5 mx clone) with Outlook. Some contacts - but just some - got duplicates. Not serious, i.e., no data were lost, but quite annoying. My Psion died off in the mean time and I am not unhappy with a Palm waiting the end of summer also to pick up something running Symbian as I had planned from the beginning.

One good thing about Palm: you do not need to use that much Outlook on a Windows machine, since it has its own calendar & contact programme (Palm desktop) with which it syncs very well and very fast.
On Mac, I guess it is even better (did not try it myself) as there is the Mac version of Palm desktop and OS X has conduits for Palm with iCal.

If anybody wishes to change subject for some debate from evolution & co. (I spared you my views on the subject and I am determined to keep doing so) does anyone have clues about desktop programs for Symbian-based machines? I heard bad stories about the Nokia version but did not try it. Any info for UIQ (2.1 or 3.0 ???) ?

Cheers to everybody
