Subject: Wiindows XP Pro & Psiwn v 2.3.3
To Steve; I had a previous computer with Windows XP home and had no
difficulty communicating. But I now do have a problem. I too have upgraded
to a new machine. Not as fancy as Steve's, a Dell 8400, but it has no serial
ports. Is there a usb to serial adapter that works or failing that, a card?
My previous machine had one serial port and I could use two devices by
switching; however, I tried a converter with no luck. Any help appreciated.

Help please !

Subject: Re: WindowsXP & PsiWin 2.3.3
All the recent discussion about WindowsXP and PsiWin 2.3.3 got me thinking I
should try PsiWint on the new Sony T350P laptop. The install went well. Then,
after struggling with desktop cables, I connected the USB/Serial cable to the
laptop, got the driver from the cable's software, and tried to connect the
netBook. Nothing.
After much searching I discovered, in Window's Hardware Devices, the cable
was set up for Com Port 5 (why it picked that, I have no idea) while
MyPsion's properties showed a check in Com boxes 1 & 2 box. I changed
everything to 2, and was then able to connect and do a backup.
In answer to Tony Cabot, I got my USB/Serial cable from Clove some time ago.
The Belkin I first tried never worked for me. I use PsiWin to backup only the
C drive because I don't keep much on it. I use a card reader and an
incremental backup program to backup the large D drive, otherwise it would
take ages via PsiWin.
I guess my next project should be to see if I can install the emulator on the
laptop and have it work.

Subject: Re: Psions & Reading Psion Files into PC
With the addition of a hard drive on one Windows machine and the installation
of new USB HP printers I have lost my Psiwin connection first one the home
machine and then on my studio machine. Reinstallation has been to no avail.
I have also been growing used to my Palm Tungston C - a great machine. Good
thumb-board, a bit better than the Treo, and with the large memory and fast
processor, all of my earlier complaints of lack of speed, etc have been
answered. It is now my major PIM carry-around.
But when I get around to creative writing, I still find myself going back to
the Psion and being thankful that, having the MBook and 2 5mx, I will be
Psion active for years to come. There is no substitute for the Psion.
To solve the connectivity problem, I am saving to CF, then moving the CF to a
card reader on my studio machine. I move it into a file and then convert as
needed using PsiWin which still works for conversion. Seems that I am doomed
to carry two machines around with me. It started with Zaurus and 3A, then
Treo and 5mx and Dana (3 then) and not 5mx and Tungsten.

Subject: re: Libretto.My 5mx/XP & PsiWin
Keith Giles wrote telling us some of the apps he used on his Psion, which
included some programs that were unknown to me.
Here's his list:
<World; Sheet; Data; iContacts; Macro5; StickyKeys, Alarm+; BikLog5; Merlin;
nSwitcher; Backup; Route; CityMaps; Crypto; abp5; Collins
English-French-English; Collins English-German-English; JB5StopGo; JB5Utils;
PsiWallpaper. I don't do games, but have PSolly on board for the few moments
I can't find anyone to talk to. :-) In the same category or some specialized
dictionaries using TomeRaider and K2. I have other apps like Gen5 and Charmap
which are used very infrequently.>
Apart from the obvious ones like Sheet & Data, and some I can guess such as
CityMaps, I would find it very useful if everybody gave some indication of
(a) what their program does, and (b) what they use it for?
Many thanks

Subject: MAPS (reversed)
Hi Folks,
Itamar, I don’t know where the stuff comes from but I get none (and I’ve no
blocking or deletion, etc., facility installed). So the Digest list itself
has *not* been compromised. I rather suspect the Digest eAddress has been
accidentally “leaked” and the mapsers neither know nor care that mapsing it
is fruitless.
But, annoying though any maps is, the volume seems to be small right now. I
truly hope it stays at this level or decreases. Maps seems to be the bane of
the InterNet and causes enormous suffering to those susceptible.
I hate it!
Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Psions,
Answer to: George Cooke
Re.: Psions - Basically I agree with your assesment. As the small Windows
machines like the Libretto would not suit the programs I use on the PC for my
photography work so I would not be able to abandon the PC world. I also need
a lot of disk space to store my photo jobs (all digital nowadays) and
currently work with 2x 160 giga disks, not obtainable in the small Libretto
type machines. Also, several of the tasks I used to do on my 5MX/S7/mB have
been taken over by the P910 like Contacts, Databases, Agenda, Tasks, and
more.
Nowadays I use my mBook mainly for emailing, handling and sending the digest
when I am the operator, bookkeeping of my photography business with Money,
banking with Abp5 and a few games (bridge being the favourite).
Best regards,

Subject: Re: livening up The Digest
Marky asked for some livening up of the digest so here is my £0.02.
My last 5mx ate it's ribbon cable at the end of last month, so I sent if off
to Psionflexi for a new one. Unfortunately the Post Office have smashed the
screen on it, so I now have a nice new mark 2 flexi inside a broken 5mx...
All this has prompted me to get netpad and netBook out from the cupboard
where they have been gathering dust and give them a whirl.
First thoughts: I really miss being able to use standard batteries. I get
about a day's use (say 6-7 hours) from the netpad or the netBook. This isn't
much removed from what I would get with the 5mx but now when the battery goes
flat it's game over, where as on the 5mx it would just be a case of reaching
into the bag for a spare set...
I can't seem to prevent myself from pressing the Menu button on tjhe netBook
at times when I should be pressing Fn. On the netpad there isn't this issue -
I am slowing getting up to a sensible speed on the tippy tappy keyboard but
it can be a right pain because it is a fiddle to get both keyboard and input
area to appear on the screen at once...
The netpad is however great for reading ebooks - it is far easier to handle
in rotated mode than the 5mx.
Is there anybody else here using a netpad? They seem to be pretty rare on
ebay. I chased up getting a spare netpad battery. They are very expensive
brand new.
I am still hoping for a pocket sized computer to replace the 5mx, neither the
netpad or netBook are it. I might have to get one of those Zarus things and
learn unix... Otherwise there is a 9500 in the window of the local electrical
second hand shop.
O2 have changed something which now means I cannot use dial-up internet on
their network, so I have gone back to Orange. Hopefully Orange's network
coverage is better than it was when I gave them up three years ago. Has
anybody else had this issue. I could never get GPRS to work with O2 but I'll
give it a go with orange. I've got a T68i mobile phone so if anybody has the
realevent settings could they share them.

(PS typed this on the netBook. If it had been the netpad it would be a two
liner.)
