Tony if you tried a Belkin as I did they are frequently a waste of money (see
old postings in the archive).
I bought the Clove USB to serial converter. It works very well and is very
small.
I use a Psion and a laptop XP with the link cable connected and am frequently
using CopyAnywhere. It quickly re-syncs after the Psion turns off to save
battery. PsiWin works very well but the Psion folder display has odd display
effects compared to win98 which I still use for Psion printing.

"Tony Cabot" <<address truncated> and
Mike Dyer <<address truncated> wrote about my posting on the new Libretto.
My need is to extend and update my GPSr and computer system. I started with
a Garmin 75 and Psion 3a and upgraded to a 5mx/7/nB and also an eMap. These
are still very usable, although the Palmtop apps are rather old, I can cope
with the old maps. Managing waypoints and tracks is still very workable.
But now Garmin (and others) have gone over to USB and also NMEA is being
replace by private protocols.
I like to keep a full record of my track, which on the GPS-75 and a Psion was
very easy and quick. Now with my Garmin 2610 I need a windoze laptop. I
bought a FS-720 PPC, which has a host USB extra connector, hoping to use that
to download the GPS track, but no software is available.
I would like to use a real Psion but that's unlikely to ever happen now.
A small windoze box would be better that a normal laptop, which are now
getting bigger and bigger screens.
Mike said that Librettos are a lot heavier than a Psion, and the batteries
don't last anything like as long. The pdf file from their website gives:-
Weight:
libretto U100 without the DVD Docking Station: 2.16 lbs. (0.98 kg) depending
upon configuration
libretto U100 mounted on the DVD Docking Station: 3.15 lbs. (1.43 kg)
depending upon configuration
My Psion 7 book says it's weight is 1150g., so a new Libretto is lighter than
a Psion 7.
The pdf file says:-
Battery Life: Up to 5 hours (measured by MobileMark™) (6-cell battery)
Now _IF_ that is true it's not that much less than my 7, but a big IF!
It's expensive as Itamar says, but not as expensive as a NavComp III, which
is a German ruggedized windoze box fitted into a vehicle permanently, with a
touch screen that can be mounted on the dash, also permanently. Keith I'll
have a look at a Sony T350P.

Martin it's website has gone. It was in my Favourites on an old PC.
I looked at it years ago but had no use for it on a 5/5mx. Now with a nB &
7, it could be useful.
I hope that you are going to say it's now been added to your website.

missed it.
I will be posting some sample PDF's from Issue 3 shortly, so keep an eye out!

Hi Irvine,
My daughters have banned me from using the word "cool" in this context.
Apparently I neither pronounce it correctly not use it appropriately; so I'll
do useful instead.
The big limitation of the Revo design is indeed its limited memory; no CF
disk, unlike the Series 5 and Series 7/netBook. So step one it to install
zExe www.mypsion.ru/zexe.php, this is an on-the-fly compression tool for
executables that can save you megabytes of space. While we're on compression
go the whole hog and install RMRZip from www.rmrsoft.co.uk or the freeware
beta version of nZip from www.pscience.net
Does your mobile work with the Phone application? PhoneManPro can
communicate with a wider range of models. www.pscience5.net
If you used sketch, comms or programmed in OPL on the 5mx, you may want to
restore these apps removed from the revo's rom. sketch from
www.epocware.com, comms from www.mypsion.ru, and OPL Editor from
www.tucows.com/preview/134430
For a good all round review of software on a revo have a look at
www.silverfishlongboarding.com/psion
Finally, beware of processor intensive programs such as No Mans Land (far
more challenging on a revo than on a netBook), though great fun they will
exhaust your batteries very quickly.

difficulties. Maybe do a search on the digest website to see if the problems
were specific to any make or not.

Here's an explanation of 3rd-party apps from my list:
iContacts: (a) Like Contacts, but allows setting up categories; (b)
Self-evident.
Macro5: (a) Too numerous to list; (b) Set up hotkeys, run macros. StickyKeys
(a) Allows use of multiple keys without holding them all down at once; (b)
Self-evident.
Alarm+: (a) Resets your preferences after a reset; (b) Self-evident. I added
Startup lines so that it starts Macro5 and StickyKeys.
Biklog5: (a) Keeps track of bicycle ride info; (b) I enter everything from my
bike's cyclometer (distance, time, ave speed, max speed,
climb) and it gives me tons of tables and graphs for any time period - I
print out a yearly set.
Merlin: (a) Sets up special toolbars; (b) I can quickly access various files,
apps, macros, connection link, etc.
nSwitcher: (a) Gives a quick show of open items and gets you there; (b)
Self-evident.
Backup: (a) Backs up what you want either manually or scheduled; (b) I
automatically backup my 5mx C drive to the D drive each night when
travelling. I use FastBackup manually on my netBook to backup both C and D
drives to E drive.
Crypto: (a) Encrypts any file; (b) I encrypt 2 Data files - UserId/passwords
and registration codes.
abp5: (a) A banking program; (b) Self-evident.
JB5StopGo: (a) 1st go - Closes all open files, opens connection link. 2nd go
- closes connection link, re-opens files; (b) When doing a backup.
JB5Utils: (a) Do various searches (find a named file, duplicate files, etc.);
(b) I use it to find files.
PsiWallpaper: (a) Manage wallpaper files; (b) Change wallpaper automatically
(weekly for me).
PSolly: (a) Solitaire card game; (b) Self-evident.
Gen5: (a) Set up family tree; (b) Add any info I find when visiting family
members overseas.
CharMap: (a) Non-English characters; (b) Useful when an app won't let you
call up Psion's built-in foreign characters.
Re: Emulator I *did* install the emulator on my Sony T350P laptop. I then
tried something different. Instead of going through the laborious process of
copying in the various 'release' and 'winsopx' files and installing the apps
I wanted, I deleted the Epoc32 folder, used my desktop/laptop network and
copied the entire C:\Epoc32 folder from the desktop to the laptop. Everything
works perfectly!
The only other thing I had to do was change the USB/Serial cable on
the desktop from the back of the machine to the front so I could
easily get to it to be able to connect it to the laptop when needed. That
required uninstalling/re-installing the USB/Serial driver. That changed the
Com port from 2 to 5 and showed up OK in MyPsion's properties.

Jim - Did you uninstall PsiWin then run RegClean before re-installing? Have
you you checked window's Device Manager and MyPsion Connections (in
properties) to see if they each have the same Com port checked?
Can you give any more details on your problem?

Subject: Wi-fi on Nokia 9500
First of all, let me just say it's nice to see lots of EPOC related stuff on
here again! I just had to dig out my S7 after reading the EPOC threads here
and remind myself of what a wonderful machine it still is - albeit rather
dated now.
Now, a little while ago I was trying to connect my Nokia 9500 to my home WLAN
network. Originally this network was set up by someone else for my laptop so
I didn't know what the WEP key was to enter in my Nokia. I have since tried
guessing it (as I had a fair idea of which keys the setup guy may have asked
me I would like to use - it was over a year ago and he certainly couldn't
remember!) Anyway, after a bit of guesswork I now seem to be able to connect
- well, I think I can. The Nokia shows me as being connected in Control
Panel/Connections, I can see the "W" icon stable in the Desk screen and if I
"Disconnect" within Web then check the Call Log, that shows me as being
connected to my WLAN network for as long as I choose to stay connected. The
trouble is, any web page I try to call up only results in the message
"couldn't find specified Internet server". Has anyone got any idea of where
I am going wrong? Accessing any web page via GPRS works fine (but expensive!)

Subject: Nice one Marky - EPOC Digest lives again!
Marky - brilliant job! It's good to see I'm not the only one who missed the
'old' digest's Psion content. The last few Digests have been back to being a
interesting and entertaining read since your post.
I say a return to EPOC only Digest, but I'll probably horse whipped for such
madness!
For me my 5mx is my constant companion, and saves my brain from much work.
Here's my most used list;
Jotter. I have about a dozen Jotter files I use to archive information. For
instance I have a Psion folder with a PsionJot Jotter file in it. Here I copy
Psion related content from emails, web pages, ideas etc... I reference these
entries that need action via a ToDo list (set up as Psion) in Agenda. This
work flow works well for me.
The only problem is when I tap Jotter to store a non-specific Jot it always
opens up the last used and often themed Jotter. Shame you can't set a
default. Any ideas?
TomeRaider. I use the Oxford English Dictionary (file available from Martin
Guthrie's site), and Webster's Encyclopaedia.
Route and CityMaps. I hook my Psion up to a GPS and the combination is great.
Corisoft's Business Warrior. I've never found a program to match its ease of
use and power. Brilliant if you're self-employed or a project planner etc
Collin's English-Italian. I'm learning Italian and this dictionary proves
invaluable.
PDF+. The second language I'm learning is OPL and use PDF+ to read the Psion
OPL Programming manual, plus of course other PDF content.
PsiDat. Want to run your website from your Psion? Look no further, an amazing
application that pushes the boundaries of the definition of a Database.
Solun. A glass of wine, my binoculars and a copy of Solun running and the
Universe is your Oyster! Tip. If you've got a GPS and Compass handy when
setting it up it helps.
Games. I love playing games, and play one to death and then move on to
another. Favourite all timers are Bombz (a little ball you move around a 3D
maze, incredibly addictive), Steve Litchfield's Pitstop (Racing strategy
game), Zheroes (Worms on the Psion), War (little tanks that fire at each
other - both Zheroes and War are great 2 player), French card game involving
a car journey but can't remember its name, Broker (Stock Broker Game
available from freepoc), Monopoly, Frotz (I like Sherlock Holmes at the
moment) and Scrabble.
Of course I use Word, Sheet, Contacts, Money, Email & Internet.
I used a Blackberry for email for a while, but always come back to my 5mx in
the end.
Viva la Psion!
Will.

Am I the only one who's noticed Martin's www.pscience5.net website recently?
I'm sure I'm not, but over the last 6 to 12 months it's gone into overdrive!
No, more than that, Warp Drive!
It's updated almost every other day, and is the source of some of the best
software available for EPOC and SIBO. Plus articles, tips, links etc.
There are many great websites that offer briliant all round Symbian content
(3Lib and AllAboutSymbian to name but two) but www.pscience5.net is without
doubt my most visited website, and offers second to non the best EPOC and
SIBO content on the web.

Subject: O2 dialup internet
Answer to: Prar
<< O2 have changed something which now means I cannot use dial-up internet on
their network, so I have gone back to Orange. Hopefully Orange's network
coverage is better than it was when I gave them up three years ago. Has
anybody else had this issue. I could never get GPRS to work with O2 but I'll
give it a go with orange. I've got a T68i mobile phone so if anybody has the
realevent settings could they share them. >>
I also found that about six or so months ago, O2's GSM dialup internet
connection stopped working for me, which is a shame as it was lightning fast.
So I stayed with O2 but reverted back to using various ISPs such as my old
Freeserve account (which I've always found very reliable), Virgin.net &
Clara.net.
I found these all worked fine when I used to have a T68i, for doing email,
either directly on the phone (which was ridiculously slow at reading emails),
or on my 5mx, using the phone as a modem. I did find it much less reliable
than my old Ericsson SH888 (the Volvo of phones), which I had before that.
I never used GPRS on the T68i, only dialup GSM data, as was afraid of the
unknown costs. I don't have the dialup settings any more, as I've now got a
9500 (which for me is finally beginning to replace my 5mx & I'm beginning to
think "what did I do before"), but there was nothing special about it. If
you want help with the appropriate value for some specific config fields, let
me know & I reckon I could remember from my old setup.
I think you may be disapointed with Orange as they operate on 1800MHz (like
T-Mobile & Virgin) rather than 900MHz like Vodafone. This means the signal
doesn't go through walls so well, which I found caused big problems with my
T68i, because of it's lack of sensitivity. I reckon you'd be better off with
Vodafone, but then it sounds like you're already stuck with Orange for a year.
The one good thing about Orange is their free email SMS alerts, which used to
work for anybody, but now only if you're an Orange subscriber. It makes
email more immediate, a bit like a manual blackberry.

Subject: OT: Improv
Hi Folks,
I ask here as I’ve had no luck elsewhere.
Many years ago I bought a Lotus package (123, AmiPro and Improv) but for
several years after my strokes I didn’t have a working PC. Now I’ve got one
(and Psion backups are a lot easier) but both my AmiPro and Improv disks are
corrupt.
AmiPro doesn’t matter to me, nor 123 but Improv!
There isn’t, and never has been, any equivalent but Lotus withdrew it
completely. For those who don’t know it’s a 12-dimensional
spreadsheet/financial modelling/database/whatever program, lightning fast and
*extraordinarily* versatile.
And I want it back!
I can’t afford to pay much for it but I’d really like to use it again. Can
anyone here help?

Subject: Psions
Hi folks,
thanks to all that have made comments to my earlier post.
This may bore some but .......
A typical day in the life my Psion:
0630 - first wake up call using Time the inbuilt alarm programme with a
customised alarm tune
0645 - second and final wake up call using Time the inbuilt alarm programme
with a customised alarm voice record giving the time and stating that is is
definately time to get up
At breakfast - check Agenda (inbuilt) for days appointments and tasks/todos,
check email using Email (inbuilt), check news and weather using web (inbuilt)
At work - use a customised Data file (inbuilt) to note down answer machine
messages, use Citymaps (not inbuilt) bought from TomTom a few years ago, it
is a fantastic must have A-Z type street map with route finding/direction
ability and covers the whole of the UK and most of Europe I think, it gives
directions and an estimate of time) to find address locations. Use Route (not
inbuilt) which is similar to City Maps but is a road map/atlas of the UK,
when I go out of county. Use Record (inbuilt) when on the road to take voice
memos. Use a customised Sheet file (inbuilt) to make site visit notes that
totals the hours and multiplies it by hourly rate to give instant price which
then adds VAT. Use a customised word file (inbuilt) template to write quotes.
Have several databases in Data (inbuilt) format with different info on
species, pests, diseases, etc. Have a jotter file (inbuilt) set up as a kind
of rough notebook. Use various dictionaries (none inbuilt) i.e Littlesense,
Collins CoBuild and Mobipockets Oxford english. I do use Spell (inbuilt)
however everytime I write a quote or letter, just to check. Use Contacts
(inbuilt) all the time for all my contacts. I use the fantastic Xtras (not
inbuilt) freeware programme and app launcher as it allows me to customise
folders and what is launched from them. I use Meter (not inbuilt) which I had
some years ago, but lost, but thanks to Martin who found it for me (Thankyou)
use as a countdown/up timer - try it, it's great. I back up myself using the
copy and paste technique into a folder called .. backup. Use RMRZip (not
inbuilt) to compress back ups. Use Encrypt and securedrive (none inbuilt) to
hold sensitive data. Use Magickeys (not inbuilt) which you can 'preprogramme'
to install words or frequently used text into a letter. Sync my phones - work
and personal - using PhonemanPro (not inbuilt) and keep in back up. Use Sink
(not inbuilt) when surfing the internet, it's a kind of firewall (?). I think
I had better stop now, but there is more .......
