Subject: Are my batteries dying?

I have a problem with my Psion Revo. When I operate it on mains power, it
runs fine. However, when I carry it for a day, it refuses to start up and
when I reconnect it back home, all files are gone. But... the battery is
still at 100%. OTOH, the red light comes up when I reconnect it, indicating
turbo charging, despite the 100% reading. What is happening here?

thanks in advance,

Charles,

>>I am completely fed up with my Sony Ericsson P800.  Lousy design and software.  Have not yet been able to set up to receive emails via Vodaphone.  They sent me an email with a list of some 40 yes Forty steps to set it up. Never had the time.<<

I set up my P910 to send and receive email in a very short time; it sounds like your problem is more due to Vodafone than the P800. The only problem that I had is that Orange in Holland are cr*p, and I'm not able to use their smtp server for some reason; instead, I have to use the smtp server from some ISP that they have a deal with. When I complained, they said "what's the problem, it works doesn't it?". They also offered to set me up for MMS, but that doesn't work either; not sure if it's Orange or my phone though, and I'm not bothered enough to try to sort it out...

I haven't used a P800, so I'm not sure of the differences between the different models, but I am extremely impressed with my P910. There are certainly flaws (others would call them "design features", to each their own) with the design (stupid, Palm-like reverting to base-state when an application goes to the background, which is totally pointless in my opinion, no built-in task-switcher, not able to close built-in
applications without 3rd party software etc.) but the overall package is amazing. While in holiday in Spain I did all my email for 2 weeks on my phone, which worked out about the same cost-wise as using an Internet cafe once a day...

Cheers, Ian.

Subject: ER5 app wanted: automatic Search & Replace

I'm looking for a Psion app that will accomplish the same thing as msub, a freeware app for WinXP.

msub is basically a programmable Search & Replace routine. The user creates a master list of terms and their desired replacements. The user then runs msub and specifies the input file (usually in .txt format), and msub goes through the text file, exchanging all the specified terms with their replacements.

For example, you may prefer your documents to say "US dollar" instead of "USD", "European Central Bank" instead of "ECB", or "Thursday" instead of "Thurs."

Thus you would create a list that looks roughly like this:
"USD" -> "US dollar"
"ECB" -> "European Central Bank"
"Thurs." -> "Thursday"

Instead of having to enter all term pairs in the Psion's Search and Replace function manually for each individual file, the user could have a central document that automatically makes these changes for the user.

Thus after running the app, the text:

"ECB bullish on USD at Thurs. meeting" would become

"European Central Bank bullish on US dollar at Thursday meeting".

Such a program is a very simple and effective tool for ensuring standardized terminology in documents. I would love to have this functionality on my Psion.

Does such a program exist for ER5, and if so, where could I find it? If such a programmable "Search & Replace" app does not exist, would it be possible
to create one? This question is directed to all the talented EPOC programmers on the digest.

Regards,

Peter

Subject: WiFi Netbook

Hello all,

on behalf on one of the Digestees in Australia (Bob), who's about to arrive on these shores and would like to avail himself of London's myriad Hot Spots; I'm looking for a retailer who has Netbook compatible WiFi (PCMCIA) cards in stock: the Buffalo WLI-PCM-L11GP for example.

Has anyone purchased one recently?

thank you

regards

Peter

Re.: Nokia 9500 & 9300 - Just out of interest, your old 5MX had a fixed angle as well and the keys wer enot illuminated either .... so comparing to the 5MX they are not worse of for these reasons (there might be others). But than on the other hand, with a touch screen you could use something like "Nightkeys".

Re.: Sony Ericsson P800 - That is strange. I use Vodaphone with my P910i and use their GPRS all the time. I never needed 40 steps and basically used their settings as they sent me. If you need any help, let me know. Everybody their own opinion, but what is so lousy about the software ?

To All:  9500

Today someone in my office building walked around with a 9500 ans we talked about it a little. He told me that there appeared to be some problems with it and that currently they are unobtainable in the UK as he tried in several places to get one. His supplier told him that apparently Nokia are doing something to it to improve it. I have no idea whether this is true or not but thought to mention it here to see if anyone else heard anything about this as well.

Best regards,

Subject: RE: Using PsiWin to Synchronise Outlook on Two Laptops

While I don't use two laptops, I do use PsiWin to synchronize Outlook on my networked desktop, and then use Palm-based software to synchronize the Agenda on my Blackberry.  It works fine, regardless of which syncs first. Each of the sync programs accepts the most recent change as the accurate one.  Occasionally I get a duplicate entry, but that usually happens on "events" or "anniversaries", probably because the three different programs treat them differently.  I would think you could do the same with your two laptops.  If you synced 5mx with Laptop 1, the most recent changes would be reflected on both.  If you then synced 5mx with Laptop 2, the most recent changed again would be reflected on both.

Subject: re. Printing via 9500

Hey Charles - Good unload I agree all the way, I never had the misfortune yet! to go out and buy any other PDA, because I've always had the pleasure to learn from all my other friends who use everything but a PSION - and not one machine yet was able to just print. It had to be emailed or sync. to a PC or be compatible with a BlueTooth device near by - if it even worked (no one was able to show me yet)

I Do have a question about your P800. I want to upgrade to a P900 from a Horrible T610 Design. The only reason why I even have this horrible T610 phone was because I need to be able to send and receive faxes directly from my psion using the IR connection to my T610 phone. (fax mail is a joke so noone recommend it Please) This seems to have been the only remaining phone capable of sending and receiving faxes.

Question
Did your P800 send faxes from your PSION through the IR Port?
Does anyone know if the P900 would? (You have to have fax enable by your provider which does cost extra)

Can anyone help?

Donald

  Google is using very high security for both POP & SMTP - which basically
means your
Psion has no chance in hell of using their service :-(
......  Oh, and their web-based access has an automatic Basic HTML
mode, which *should* mean it's accessible using Opera (and perhaps even
Web) on our Psions.<<<<<

-RE
Ye,
I long ago succeded only once to pop (port 995) my gmail account
By now their AuthorLogin keeps my psion out :-{
As for their webmail Opera 5.14 (not 3.62, nor Web) does the trick indeed
using (without downloading images):

http://gmail.google.com/gmail?nocheckbrowser      !!!

No a problem however as I rather use gmail to store messages and backup
documents ;-)
and their automatic transfert system works fine

Subject: GPRS via Sony Ericsson phone,

To Rick Mitchell
<<I am trying to connect to SFR's GPRS Wap network (France) using a Psion 5mx
and a Sony Ericsson K300i as the modem. Using the Psion's e-mail program or "The Dialer" , the phone won't dial or even light up. I get an error message that the modem is not responding.>>

I have a Sony Ericsson F500i which looks similar to the K300, mine also does not work as a modem  with eiter a Revo or an MC218, and like yours does not even light up.  It does however, work with Contacts, Phone and Agenda but when I try to connect for emails I just get the message "no response from modem etc". I've tried  SE customer support but they say they don't offer support for connectivity to PDA's!!
If you ever do manage to sort it please let me know how.
Dave
