Subject: really a 7book?
Hi all,
I sent a message a while ago asking for advice on whether my machine is a 7/netbook/malaybook/7book.
The specs are:
"series 7" badge above keyboard
Machine:
type: series 7
software: 1.05(254)
Hardware:
processor: SA-1100
speed: 191.692MHz
ROM 13M
RAM 19M
About netbook info:
Epoc release 5
version 1.05(254) - English (UK) - ASCII (Build 156)
Note, I installed the OS so don't take this as an authority on what the machine is!
Most responses said the machine was likely to be a 7Book, that I would be able to use it with wi-fi and that I would benefit from installing the latest OS file.
I have installed 1.05(450) Release 158 but when I try to hit the ethernet button in the control pannel i get 'not found'. does this mean my machine is not a 7book and thus not compatible with wi-fi? i take it ethernet is needed for wi-fi!!
Thanks for any help
regards,
tom

Re.: The Recent Digest - In the name of the 4 operators left we thank you all for your compliments. However, in the end it is the posters of messages that are disciplined enough in this digest not to repeat the original messages. Sometimes the digest is more interesting, other times less, sometimes there are more messages, other times less, but as long as there is interest in the digest, we will continue it.

Re. crack at the top of keypad - Is this only the P910 or also the P910i ? On my thumbboard the "c" is at the bottom and no arrows near it. I can't see any cracks either. <
Sorry, I should have made it clearer. The "C" I referred to is on the number side of the keypad. The "c" key is above the 2 & the crack is on the top edge of the keypad and - if present - only visible when "c" is pressed.
***Hopefully*** you don't have the probIem!

Subject: Luddite Upgrades
Although I was the first in my engineering group to have a computer (I
bought my own Radio Shack Model 100 and upgraded to an 8086 DOS
machine that I built myself), I have always been a luddite. I
resisted moving from DOS to Windows and was the final hold-out
wordstar user when the company forced a move to MS Word for
standardization.
That being said, I have been holding with 52kb via telephone lines
since day one. Now my wife is complaining that I'm hogging the line
(we're both on GMail, our first web based mail system) and that I
should put in another tel line.
The question is whether to bite the bullet and go broadband (DSL???)
or simply add a second line.
If I go broadband, can I simultaniously operate two computers (I
assume a minny server would be required), should I consider going the
whole package with TV (we normally go basic service when we have cable
- no cable at present).
And should I even consider going wireless and perhaps WIFI?
Being a Scotsman (father born in Aberdeen), I worry about an
open-ended cash flow while solving this equation.
For WIFI considerations I have a WIFI enabled Tungsten C and both my
wife and I have Malay Books with WIFI cards.

Itamar,

I think Alan might have meant the C(lear) key at the top of the numeric pad (ie. next to the back key).
Re. memory problems. I always use FreeMem to reclaim "lost" memory; this is available from FreEPOC (http://www.freepoc.org/viewapp.php?id=64). I find that it releases anywhere from 100kb to several MB after using Opera.
Cheers, Ian.

From Alan Rabbitte - Is there a crack at the top of your P910i keypad?
Alan,
Yes there does appear to be a small crack at this position on my P910i. Obviously due to pressure on the keypad at this position. My P910i is not under warranty as I bought it second hand off ebay a while back - but even if it was under warranty I don't think I would bother sending it for repair. It appears to me to be caused by fatigue from using the keypad in the closed position. Unless the keypad were redesigned to be either stronger laterally or a tiny foot that would brace between the keypad and screen at this point then the crack would probably reoccur anyway.
Itamar - the crack is along the top edge of the keypad when it is closed. Press the "C" key on the front of the keypad and look down along the screen. It takes quite a firm press to bend the keypad till it almost touches the screen and reveal the tiny crack.
Now for a question of my own - does anyone use their P910i for satnav with a bluetooth gps receiver? What is the best navigation software to use for both street guidance in my car and navigating whilst hiking on foot?

Subject: Black magic?
What's this?
My MC218 had been idle for a month or two, while I wa toying with other computers.
The main batteries where flat of course, and were replaced, but the back-up was OK.
When I started typing a funny thing happened.
I pressed "a" and "a2" came up. I pressed "s" and "s3" came up, "d" and "d4" appeared, etc for the six first letters in the row.
Same thing with the numbers. "1" gave "1 space", "2" gave "a2", "3" gave "s3" etc for the six first keys.
Strange.
I tried to correct it the easy way with KeyBLoayout. It just confirmed that these changes had been made, and I could not change it with any of the commands.
I deleted KeyBLayout. No effect.
I tried a soft re-set. No effect, apart from deleting a great many files.
I have not dared to do a hard re-set yet.
What could it be?

Subject: Pxxx users
For those Pxxx users amognst us, I came across the following links which might be of some interest;
http://www.cic.com/support/faq/Pos/Jot/Characters.html is a summary of how to enter the "normal" characters, while
http://www.cic.com/support/faq/Pos/Jot/Symbols.html explains how some of the more "exotic" characters are entered.
