Hi all, hi Tony,

All our discussions are good for our ego, but we have to find a solution for Tony Napier, who "still [has] not solved [his] inability to send mail via broadband." as he wrote.
His problem is, that he has two dial up accounts (which.net and doctors.org.uk) and obviously uses the email service from theese both internet service providers.

In my opinion, he has two options:

1. to do it like me, drop the both email-accounts, and mail from an independent email provider. Problem: He has to tell all his mailpartners his new adress.
Maybe he is lucky and finds an email-provider that allows him sending mail via their SMTP using his own (which or doctor) adress in the from field. This will probably not a free (without cost) mail provider.

2. don't change anything, and to send mail connect the internet using his dial up internet service provider. (I do that, if I want to check mail but neither want to boot my pc (to use DS-link) nor to use my netBook with WLAN (this means copying the mail folder from 5mx to netBook, check mail and copying the folder back to the 5mx).) If he is out of britain, he needs to use an international call home, but this seems not to be his primary problem.

3. ask his email-provider (which.net or doctors.org.uk?), if it is possible to use another authentification method than his actual IP-authentification. If they insist on letting him use their SMTP only after connecting the internet via their own connection, he probably can not send mail being connected via broadband. (Maybe there is a possibility using VPN (virtual privet net), but this demands them (which or doctors) beeing very cooperative and I believe, they prefer selling online time, than beeing cooperative.)

Psee you,
Armin

PS:
Rolf, thank you for your analysis, but I am not having my "eyes firmly focussed on scheme no. 3 [...] (SMTP  Authentication)".
I use scheme no. 2 (POP Before SMTP) and know the other schemes.
But I am focussed on the case that Itamar is always telling people, that they have to configure their SMTP as if only scheme no.1 exists.

Simon,
>>In the EPOC mail app, you can delete an account by highlighting the mailbox in the folder view & pressing 'Delete'.<<

Unfortunately, the Fax accounts don't show up in the folder view, only in the Tools > Account Settings menu.

Cheers, Ian.

I know Tiscali have a bad reputation, but I've never had any problems with
their broadband service and I've been with them for a couple of years. Their
contention ratio is lower than most and they're also cheap, offering
unlimited 1Mbps download for £14.99/month at present (free modem & free
connection).

They do publish an IP address for their SMTP server, and it allows you to
send mail "as if" it had come from another mail server.  This email was sent
from their server but appears to come from my "fish.co.uk" account. It
doesn't require authentication either. However it is not an open relay (i.e.
spam-friendly); I suspect they block connections from any non-Tiscali
broadband IP addresses.

I should confess that I haven't used it with my Psion but see no reason why
it shouldn't work.

Hope this helps,

Ed.

P.S. I'm nothing to do with them!

Hi Tony,

Just don't unzip them. It looks like you didn't download the EPOC SIS-Files (which come packed within ZIP files). Just go here: http://www.mvcsys.de/docs/smtpauth.html.

Read the documentation first, then download epocutil-sis.zip and smtpauth-sis.zip. The unzipped files epocutil.sis and smtpauth.sis can then be installed on your Psion.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, I'm the author of SmtpAuth. There are rumors that the software actually works if set up properly ;-)

i-mate Jasjar PocketPC phone

A replacement of sorts for the Psion 5mx? Here is an interesting device that is making an impact. I have not had the opportunity to test one yet but would appreciate any feedback as to its functionality as a replacement for the 5mx.

Subject: IR connection Psion 5mx/MC218 and Windows Smartphone

Dear Jan,

>>Been lurking for some time now, the prime reason being my purchase of an iMate SP3i/Qtek 8020 Windows smartphone.<<

It's good that you're happy with it. The iMate's/Qtek's seem to devide the world in two almost equal groupings, those that are happy with it and those that throw it away already after two weeks. I never tried it but I have several colleagues who tried it. Some of them still use it. Others moved to P900/P910 or Nokia 9300/9500 quite soon.

>My question then is: the iMate has a modem link option, but can anyone on this digest inform me wether it is compatible with the Psion way of IR-comm - with or without plBeam.<

The plBeam software has nothing to do with the modem option. Psion 5mx/MC218 uses standard IrDA. And it's pretty rock solid. If anything is wrong in the modem communication with your iMate it's probably incompliance on the iMate's side, not on the Psion side. So you should rather check the iMate forums.

The best verification is trying it yourself since you have both machines.

My experience is that Psion does not have any problems whatsoever doing modem connections over IrDA with the latest phones as long as the phones support it. It works excellently with both the P900/P910 and with the Nokia 9500/9300.

The add on softwares that I am aware of, e.g. plBeam, CBeam and the like, are all intended for file transfer, not modem. While the Psions fully comply with the modem profile, they do not inherently support OBEX.

We use the Phone Co-op, a locally-owned and run co-operative business who offer phune and internet services incl. broadband. Friendly knowledgable local tech support too. www.phonecoop.coop and they do have a smtp server!!!

Although highlighting the remote mailbox icon of an unwanted mail account + <Delete> is the correct & intuitive (once you've discovered it!) method of deleting a *mail* account from Psion Mail, I'm not sure this will work for Ian's multiple fax accounts.  There should only ever be one Fax account, which is created by default - any others are, I think, the result of corruption within the System Mail folder; probably in its labyrinthine Index file.  However, IIRC, like the default Fax account, these duplicate Fax accounts don't appear as selectable mailboxes (since, like SMS, incoming Fax messages aren't held on a user-accessible remote server), but as extra items under 'Tools > Account settings' which aren't so easily excised.  I have also had spurious remote mailboxes appear, but can't remember if they could be conventionally deleted - in either case, though, I didn't have the confidence to continue using the data-critical Mail app with a compromised Index file.

It is possible to delete the Index file and force Psion Mail to re-Index its Mail folder (this has been discussed & explained here, in the past - Chris Handley has created a utility to automate this process (Digest #586/8)).  Although I've not found this to be completely infallible, it's certainly worth a try.  Otherwise, assuming you don't mind losing your existing messages, the safest thing is to archive/delete the entire existing Mail folder and start again with a fresh one, which will be created automatically when Mail is launched again.

Quickly searching my Digest archive, there are references to this multiple fax account problem in nos. 500, 501, 556 and to Mail Index problems in 584, 585, 586, 588, 689.

Lewis

Subject: K700i connecting problems
I am currently using the Sony Ericsson K700i. I have been unable to talk to the phone from my Mnetbook using infra-red (my only   option) I have been using the same options for SE phones like my previous SE T610 and SE T68i. Neither Internet dial-up nor faxing work.

Hi,
I also have this phone and after a bit of research I followed Mike Mcc directions and, using comms got it to ring my isp. But I can't get it to connect using e-mail. Interestingly I can't get it to use it's built in e-mail client either. Mine is a branded 02 phone SW R2AN001. Is yours on 02? I wonder if there is a phone or branding bug here?

Re.: GPS questions - Thanks for the answers, it does look like a very nice and competitively priced unit. The POI's you can enter with a .csv file which is quite similar to the Psions.

Answer to: Ian Chapple

Re.: email settings - It all depends how you work. I have 3 different types of emails I send from my Psion, private, work and the digest. Now if I use let's say also 3 different ISP's, ADSL at home, ADSL in the office and GPRS I would need 9 different mailboxes and always choose 3 of them to send emails with the correct email address and the correct smtp server. So it is a lot easier to have a macro change the smtp server in only 3 mailboxes and set the default mailbox accordingly.

Re.: E mail with broadband - Could it be that while you are technically right, Rolf wrote his answer in a way that makes it understandable also for non-technical people in this field. For the average user the smtp server is connected to his ISP, even if technically speaking this might not be the case ?
