Subject: Funny behaviour & some reflections
Dear all,
On these pages I lamented in April the demise of my beloved MC 218. It
started to sound a melody, the screen went out and the unit was not
responding. A soft reset was of no use, taking out the batteries and putting
them in was to no avail either. So I took a deep breath, went Palm for the
time being and missed my MC 218.
Last week I checked the machine, which had both the main batteries and the
back-up almost bone dry. I put fresh (rechargeable) AA batteries and the
machine came back up, as if nothing had happened!
I guess this worked as a kind of slow and long hard reset, but it worked!!
Any idea about what has happened in detail?
I had all files on the CF card and I had synched contacts and calendar with
a PC, and then back to the new Palm. So basically everything is there,
barring the extra applications (how can I start my day without Solun?). Now,
if I could only find where I put my serial synchro cable …
Now that I have both my MC 218 and my Palm (with a foldable keyboard)
working side to side, I will provide the Digest in the next days with some
reflections and experiences of an Epochian in Palm land.
Kind regards,
PS: wish me welcome back to the (operating) Psion family

Subject: Psion hell
I was nodding sagely at all the postings here about the heavenly virtues of the Psion. Then a foreign trip came up, and once again I was on my hands and knees by the telephone socket, trying to convince the 5mx to communicate with cyberspace. How the heart sinks.
I have a working Compuserve classic account, Itamar's script (and his old IR Travel modem!), and various bits and pieces of advice about all the settings needed. But after a fruitless hour or so, I've given up the attempt on a life's-too-short basis.
The sheer number of variables in all the setting up is completely bonkers. I feel sure that the proud owners of all these wizzy new things don't have to go through all these hoops. Woe is me, etc.

yeah! Wow, and thanks for the news...
Some conversion utilities for the date we have on the Psions would be nice; and also rechargeables instead of proprietary battery...
best,

Subject: Zippy & Jzip problems
I have tried to get Zippy and Jzip to run on my 5mx. When I click on either of them, I just get a not found message. I assume I am missing some Java component, but am not sure. Anyone have any ideas? I am sure it is something easy I have forgotten. --Chris

Subject: Psion 5mx - Hard Reset,
Answer to: Charles Davies
Re.: Psion 5mx - Hard Reset - If you are traveling first of all be aware that with a hard reset you will lose all the contents of your hard disk and you should make sure you have it backed up on a CF card first !
The easiest way is to push a paperclip in little hole next to the back-up battery, open the Psion again, hold down both shift keys and switch on the Psion. Alternatively, take out both the main and back-up batteries and wait a few minutes before putting them back again.

Subject: 9500 Bluetooth keyboard
Dear Psioneers and Nokians
My biggest problem with the 9500 as a replacement for my 5mx was my inability to touch type on it - this problem has now been solved! Yesterday I bought a Bluetooth keyboard which works with my Nokia 9500. It is a Freedom Keyboard from freedomkeyboard.com. Three weeks ago they
released a driver for the 9500. I am typing this email on it and and learning all the functions at present, but I think I am going to be very happy with it.
In size (when open) and in feel it is very much like the keyboard on my old IBM Thinkpad 500, ie. slightly smaller than a full size keyboard, but sufficient to type on and larger than a 5mx. It folds up into a small package which is about half the size of a 5mx, fits easily in a jacket pocket and comes with a nice pouch.
Yes this does mean carrying two devices, but this is only neccessary when I know that I am going to be typing alot. I think that with the colour screen and the integration of phone and psion functions, my 9500 has now become a real replacement for my 5mx.
Having used the keyboard for a few hours my only complaints are the lack of an ESC key, no CHR key and still getting used to the repeat rate. Also I have not found out how to do page up and down yet, control right arrow and a few other functions.
Price was R850 including tax (about $130).
For me this is a real solution for touchtyping on the 9500.
Many regards from a springy Cape Town.
Max

Subject: Alarms in UIQ Agenda
Does anyone know if there is a way to specify a particular alarm when creating an Agenda item under UIQ? Or can this only be done by changing the default alarm in the Control Panel? Is this possible using any of the alternative Agenda programs?
I tried HandyDay 2004 about 6 months ago, and would like to try it again. Unfortunately, the demo version won't run, as it's now much later than the 30 days allowed for a trial. Does anyone know how to "trick" HandyDay into running? I am certainly not going to buy such a program without trying it again first...
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: Psion-friendly Internet in a German hotel
Hi everybody,
I am going for a week to Bernkastel and I am looking for a temporary Internet provider for my netBook, as the analogue modem is usually the most cost-effective way to get Internet and e-mail.
However, what I find are:
- special phone number: I doubt it whether they will function in a hotel or not and at what tariff ?
- Cost-by-call Internet phone numbers, with direct access without your own account, but no SMTP-server. How can I then send mail ? Webmail gets a bit expensive...
Could anyone advise me how to get a Psion-friendly temporary German ISP and SMTP ?
CC per private mail would be much appreciated, as I will be leaving Sunday.
Yours sincerely,
Thomas VAN DER ZIJDEN
