"This program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored in Outlook. Do you want to do this? If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should choose "No"."
I check the "Allow access for x minutes", select the default "1 min", and click "Yes". Then the process continues successfully.
Is this the normal process? Is there some way to have the synch do its thing without my having to check that box and click "Yes" each time?<<
Hi Keith,
Yes, this is normal behaviour with the new versions of Outlook. You can get round it by installing a freeware utility on the PC called Express ClickYes. Get it here: http://www.contextmagic.com/express-clickyes/

Alan,
>>It is of course possible your battery has expired, but it is also possible that - as has been suggested by somebody else - that there may have just been a runaway process that was using up the CPU and therefore the battery in the background.<<
It was me :-)
>>The best way to detect and eliminate these is to use the freeware SMAN spplication. This is now at version 4 and is available from
http://www.renegade-uiq.com/. <<
I have SMan, TaskSpy and Magic Launcher installed. However, as far as I am aware, none of them actually give any information about whether a task is "misbehaving", so, although you can kill a task, you won't necessarily be able to tell which one actually needs killing.
Cheers, Ian.

Re: Laptop & GPS in car - How do you use a laptop in the car with a GPS while driving?
I could use a custom in-car holder available from Palmcase for my JVC Mininotebook, but at €249 I think this is rather an expensive solution, so I just rest it on the front passenger seat. I only look at the visual display when I'm stationary and rely on the voice instructions when I'm moving. Honest!

Subject: Outlook synchronisation
For Keith
I do not have to sync e-mails, but I get the same message if the Psion needs to write to Outlook to update/add an appointment. Seems to be a sensible safety feature, and doesn't take up too much time.

Re.: routeplanner with GPS - Well, after all those years still something new for my Psion. Thanks, I had no idea these macros existed. I'll try it out one day when I need to use it again.

Re.: Battery problems on the P910 - Thanks for the answer. Yes, it is possible it was an open program. Sometimes one opens by mistake the camera or camcorder and "clsoing" it does not really close the program. I have SMan installed but Handy Day 2004 has got the same functionality to close programs. I also used email (not surfing) quite a lot via GPRS and I think this also takes quite a lot of battery power. Anyhow, traveling with 2 batteries will give me at least double the time online (and enough power to watch a movie on it on the flight). Yes, the Flash memory is better in that you will not lose anything when disconnecting the power. I am aware of this, I switch off my phone every night which closes all the open programs.

Re.: Synchronization - Yes, it is a P.I.T.A. from Microsoft. Luckily some clever guy posted a small program on the internet that will do it for you. I work with it installed at work as we have several programs that require the "yes" answer. Search the web for "ExpressClickYes" or go to http://www.ContextMagic.com.

Subject: Times gone by
Hi Folks,
Rolf (Brunsting), whilst I have no doubt that scientists in Europe have the quandary you report, my post (inspired by a report on the BBC Radio 4 “Today” programme) was about politicians in the US, presumably related to those who wanted to repeal the Law of Gravity (probably an apocryphal tale) and legislate for pi to equal *exactly* 3 (for similar lunacy, watch “Inherit The Wind” - a film about the Scopes monkey trial).
But, rather more seriously, I can’t see why clocks/watches/Psions shouldn’t be adjusted to match *real* time (mine are) and why that shouldn’t be adjusted using leap seconds either. To us, as users of time, the adjustment would be transparent - in fact, it *is* transparent.
Waiting until the difference is an hour seems plain crazy, waiting until it’s a minute seems pretty silly. After all, we’re only talking about a very few reference clocks here. Modern time started with the railways (until then Bristol was several minutes behind London) and astronomical time with improved navigation. Then seconds counted - and they still do, just not to most of us.
We set our timepieces regularly anyway and I, for one, used to set mine exactly every day (sheer professionalism!). It doesn’t really matter now but I still do it weekly.
And I’d prefer it to be right!
Happy days,
Phil.

How will they know the time of day
Should the Twelve Twenty cease to run
Eight minutes late down Didcot way?
And oh! the anguish at the deep heart’s core,
The milk train doesn’t stop here anymore!”

Subject: Intellisync v 5.01; Routeplanner and GPS; Synchronisation (Outlook security)
I searched The Digest but found almost no entries so I imagine that Intellisync wasn't popular (probably because of its ludicrous price) but anyway, here goes.
Does anyone have the Symbian plugin for this version of Intellisync or know where I could get it? The reason being that Intellisync v 5.01 is (was) advertised as being compatible with Palm, Pocket PC and Symbian/ Psion. Only you had to download the Symbian plugin from the Pumatech website. And you don't find that out till you've bought the package off eBay and got it in your hot little hands. And the link on the Pumatech website has been removed. And the helpful Pumatech support technician says "we don't have that software any more - do you wish to be notified when there's a suitable product for you to upgrade?". And do you wish to discuss this support issue some more? You've got 72 hours. Pah!
Why do I want this software I hear you say? Well, because it's there, I suppose, and it's now become a matter of honour too! Seriously though (and this might amuse some of you that have had many synchronisation issues over the years) there is still one major synchronisation issue that I've never fully resolved and that's contacts with multiple PCs and my 5mx. For background I sync my Psion Agenda with my desktop at home, my desktop at the office, my personal laptop and my office laptop. I also have 4 other Agenda files similarly synced - these are with the organisation's corporate meetings calendar (it's a local authority so there are hundreds of
meetings), for our conference/ meeting room, a shared calendar that all my staff and I share and a fourth specifically for kids and holiday planning - obsessive or what? Works for me, but that's not all. I also have both my office e-mail account and my main private e-mail account synced to the Psion and used to also be able to access my private e-mail via dialup with Psion Email but haven't yet managed to figure out the intricacies of smtpauth
yet - so I use XJMail instead for the meantime.
But I've never been happy with the contacts synchronisation so only sync it with one PC and manually update the others - messy. To try to sync it with more than one ends up with duplicates eventually, no matter how careful you are. So I wanted to try Intellisync to see how well that worked and bought version 5.01 off eBay. Imagine my frustration at trying to get the plugin that I describe above. So far I've only been able to get hold of Intellisync for Symbian version 4. Can anyone help with version 5? Many thanks if you can - email addr below.
Re: The Digest V1 # (various)
>Routeplanner and GPS HowTo - get hold of a Palmtop GPS on eBay. There's one for sale there now and the last two that I saw went for less than £30 - a bargain if you ask me. It works a treat with the Psion and TomTom software. It's much simpler than using a Garmin as there's no extra cables to buy. Want to use the whole thing handheld? See my article on Martin Guthrie's site at http://www.pscience5.net/PalmtopGPS.htm.

No. It's an Outlook security feature and you really wouldn't want to disable it even if you could, especially given Outlook's (lack of) security credentials. If it were disabled you would have no warning of any attempt by a malicious program to e-mail all your contacts or steal all their addresses!

Subject: GPS programs
To all:
In the meantime I found out that TomTom Mobile 5 is already for sale in the UK, for example at Expansys. However, while it is supposedly the "Rolls Royce" of the GPS programs, a distinct disadvantage is that it comes only with maps for GB and not for Europe. Apparently they don't have a Europe version. You can buy online from TomTom for Euro 147.- a Cd with all of Europe but that includes GB again so in fact you pay twice for these maps. You can also download city maps from their website for Euro 9.9 per city. Route66 is apparently not as good a program but you can buy a European version that includes GB as well and has got street level maps. I am not sure which one to go for so I'll wait. Maybe after X-mas there will be special offers around.
Any comments anyone ? Is anyone using a GPS program on their smartphone already ? Experiences ?
Bye,
Itamar
