G3 700. Indeed, none of the post-G3 B&W Macs had serial ports, there are third party internal cards or external adapters though. I just switched to Tiger, but I'll keep OS 9 on an external HD for vintage apps like the very simple psion-to-mac text converting script... As for connecting the MX5 to the Mac by rs232, I tried, it's quite slow...

I'm doing a backup and deleting them, just to see what happens... I still have no clue as to how they got onto C...
What I do know is, deleting them from D always caused the CF to become corrupt with ao the very mysterious symptom of animated file-names turning into garbage under my eyes...
The tip with not opening any windows on CFs in the Finder: I'll remember, thanks!

Subject: MorseIt - the Morse tutor is available
Hello Psioneers,
many of you will remember Owen Morgan, the sailing psioneer, as a very active member of this digest. A long while ago he started to develop MorseIt, a morse tutor for the Psions. Some people may still have a beta version of this macro.
MorseIt has evolved to version 1.0 as a coproduction between Owen and myself. You can look at the features and download it on
http://psion.uh-lab.de
On the MorseIt page (far below), there is also a way how you can find out about Owen's whereabouts and even his email address. But send short mails only, no attachments. He is well and stays currently in Mindelo.

Subject: RE: PhoneMan Pro locked out by lost password
Many thanks to all for the solutions offered.
The method that worked for me was:-
(1) uninstall PhoneMan Pro; (2) delete the PM-P data files (which I had initially missed - they were in Documents, but, because the folder display was organised by file type, were not noticed by me the first time); (3) finally reinstall PM-P again.
PhoneMan Pro now works without problem.
Thanks again,

Subject: P910i and Bluetooth
I was wondering if anyone has successfully connected their P800/900/910 to a Windows PC via Bluetooth. I have bought a Sitecom CN-502 BT adapter, which works (sort of!!). I am able to send files between my phone and the PC, but I am not able to synchronise or backup via BT. If I try this, I am informed that Windows cannot find any Bluetooth devices, even though the Device Manager says that the BT adapter is working correctly AND I can send files via BT.
I have read something about some software called mrouter, which I have downloaded but not yet installed, but am not exactly sure what this is supposed to do.
Any help in sorting this out would be much appreciated.
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: Macro GPScalcNew updated to V1.3
Hello List,
a few days ago Ed Kaneen mentioned my macro GPScalNew. It can do a recalculation of the route in Routeplanner and Citymaps, if you have lost your way. With the help of Itamar for the English keystrokes, which differ from the German ones, it runs on German and English (and all other languages with the same keystrokes) machines now.
Find it on http://psion.uh-lab.de to download.

Subject: Datalogger program DMMtr5 for Psion ER5 machines
Hello List,
the system METEX (or VOLTCRAFT) Digital Multimeter (DMMtr) + PSION5 + this software is characterised best as a small lightweight data recording system for slowly varying processes - a datalogger! Because of its low power consumption it is particularly suited for observations in the field of processes which are slow, have long (even years!) duration and for which electrically readable sensors are available.
The program is designed to work with the METEX M-3640D digital multimeter.
Feature list (excerpt)
Reads data from the Digital Multimeter and displays, stores and retrieves the results graphically.
Demo mode included (runs without a plugged in multimeter).
Audio signals can be sent when threshold values are under- or overrun.
Logging durations between 26,4 secs and 11 days per screen.
Up to 99 consecutive screens can be automatically filled, giving a theoretical maximum logtime of 11d*99/365=2,98 years.
If these timings do not suit you (e. g. need for syncronization with some other process), you can set up your individual timing
Graphs may be stored as bitmap files (PSION .PIC format).
Data may be stored in a CSV text file for subsequent numerical processing, e.g. by importing the file into a spreadsheet program.

Subject: Mobile GSM connection from Psion 5MX using IR
Hi,
Anyone do this using one of those nice new Nokia 6020 phones? How's it work? I currently use a 6250 (old and B&W) but would like to upgrade to colour phone. The 6020 is IRDA enabled - but will it work with the 5mx for email/web?
Cheers,
Kev

Dear Phil,
<< ... whilst I have no doubt that scientists in Europe have the
quandary you report ... >>
That the scientific convention was held in Geneva doesn't mean that
the adjustments are limited to Europe. As it concerns the adjustment
of the atomic clocks it's an adjustment which has to be carried out
world wide.
<< ... for similar lunacy, watch “Inherit The Wind” - a film about
the Scopes monkey trial ... >>
Real life produces more lunacy than a fictional/dramatised account of
the Scopes trial. Two weeks ago the Kansas Board of Education voted 6
to 4 in favour of making it mandatory for biology teachers to mention
a kind of disclaimer when they discuss Darwin's theory of Evolution
by Natural Selection. The disclaimer would tell pupils that Darwin's
theory is but a theory, that it's unproven, that there are
alternative theories, etc., etc. Makes you wonder how well educated
the members of the Kansas Board of Education are as the disclaimer is
100% religious politics and 0% science education.
<< But, rather more seriously, I can’t see why clocks/watches/Psions
shouldn’t be adjusted to match *real* time ... Waiting until the
difference is an hour seems plain crazy, waiting until it’s a minute
seems pretty silly ... >>
You already accept that your clocks/watches/Psions show a deviation
of roughly eight hours per year, which is corrected by having a leap
year every four years. When you really want to use 'real time' -
based on the sidereal year - you'd have to adjust your clocks/watches/
Psions by about 3 seconds every hour. The proposal is therefore far
from crazy/silly as it concerns the very small adjustments that are
made in addition to the leap year. Consolidating the leap second
adjustments into a leap minute or leap hour is much less drastic than
the leap year we're all familiar with.
<< After all, we’re only talking about a very few reference clocks
here. Modern time started with the railways... >>
There are far more atomic clocks in use than you imagine. Dutch
National Railways has one, for example. It controls eight regional
master clocks - made by Patek Philipe of Geneva - which are
responsible for keeping all station clocks in synch. Watch a Dutch
station clock and you'll see it ticking the first 59 seconds of every
minute according its own clock mechanism. The signal for the second
hand to move to the 12 - the final second of the minute - comes from
the regional master clock.

Subject: Re: Battery life
Dear Itamar,
<< It could be the battery life was shortened by using email several
times via GPRS >>
That's a given as you told us that you'd configured your P910 to
check for e-mail ever 30 minutes. As each check involves processor
and radio activity it means that each check reduces battery capacity
by x%.
<< Also, it happened while I was in The Netherlands so could it be
that whenever I am not in the UK battery life will be less due to the
roaming and not being on your own network ? >>
Roaming on foreign networks has no effect on power consumption
whatsoever.
<< Sometimes one opens by mistake the camera or camcorder and
"clsoing" it does not really close the program >>
Both Camera and Camcorder applications use the screen as viewfinder.
Updating the screen is only important when these applications are in
the foreground as you don't see what's in front of the lens when
they're in the background. Looks to me that their activities are
suspended the moment you switch to another application sp these
applications don't use any power.

Subject: Sudden Lack of memory
I have been happily synchronising my Revo and Outlook on my computer for a long while now and apart from one occasion when I had to delete the Agenda file and start again to reduce the file size, it has worked fine.
However I have now come up against a persistant lack of memory error even when starting from scratch with a synchronising of just 1 day previous and 1 day forward ( I used to do it 2 months in the future).
When clicking on "today" it tells me I am using 74% of memory but I haven't got that many files and no more than when it was working properly.
Any suggestions/possible solutions.
I guess hitting reset and starting completely over is one?

Batteries
=========
On my P800 the batteries go down fast.
I have tried 3 batteries, one old the other 2 just purchased.
The phone is kept switched off most of the time as I don't use it for incoming calls, only when I'm away from base to reply to emails.
I can charge the phone for a day, keep it switched off and when I start it up a week later the batteries won't even complete a reboot. Just the same with all the battery sets.
Any ideas, anyone?

Subject: Buffalo card
Hi,
My Mbook has stopped connecting to the broadband router via my Buffalo cardrecently. I fired up Netstat and it shows no connection. The WiFi network isworking Ok. I have tried the paperclip reset and everything else seem OK.Ihave no other machine in which to test the card unfortunately. I use WEP andhave reentered the code in case it had been corrupted but even so surely thenetwork would be found even if not connected to? Are there any other testsor suggestions Digest readers might make?
Many Thanks,

Subject: BigBen program
As CellphoneSoft were very quick in answering my questions I thought it not more than fair than to quote some of the answer in the digest :
My remark : the flip closed the screen lights up, switches to the main screen and switches back again to the clock
Answer : This is due to the behavior of the built-in Phone application which also provides the standby screen in flip closed mode. The Phone app comes to foreground in every minute. BigBen can not prevent this as there is no published API to control the Phone app's behavior. BigBen however notices when the Phone app came up, and immediately eliminates it - but an unpleasant flashing is the consequence.
My remark : The result is that your program uses about 12% of the battery power in just 1 hour. I tested this over several hours !!
While BigBen does use battery power (like all running programs), 12 % per hour is much more than what we have measured. To selectively measure BigBen's battery consumption, please make sure that you compare it to data taken under the very same conditions, but without BigBen running.
My question: Will you in future check this matter and correct it ? With such a battery usage you will appreciate that it is not a useful program.
Answer: We are working on making BigBen more "environment-friendly" and will include improvements as soon as a solution is found.
My remark: However, when using the phone on a charger in the car (phone in a craddle), I think the program should also recognise that
Answer: You are right, but unfortunately this is a problem similar to the one mentioned above. There is no public API to detect when the phone is connected to the charger, the car-holder, or the craddle. Again, a solution will be included as soon as it is found.
Sofar for their answers. In the meantime I did a test in the office today. I charged the phoen completely for several hours, and when I took it off it showed 98%. I closed all programs but for Handy Day 2005 and Handy Desktop, Phone and Applications and set countdownSJ to 1 hour, closed the phone and left it, no calls or SMS's. After one hour it showed 97%. I did the same another hour and it showed 96%. So typical stand-bye power consumption is 1% per hour. Now I switched on Bigben screensaver and repeated the test again. After one hour it showed 88% and after the second hour 81%. It appears that the program, although not 12%, does take 7 to8% battery power per hour, and on a working day of 9 hours that woud be 60 to 70% of your battery power on this program alone before you made any calls or sent SMS's or emails. I informed them of my test and will let you know if there is any meaningful answer again.
Bye,
Itamar
