So I closed it up, turned it over and did a soft reset.  When I reopened it, I got a beep beep - and the same old screen.  Only now it will turn off in all the normal ways - and back on to that same old screen.  Perhaps my OS file wasn't the correct one? When I check its length using my desktop, it reads 14,627,072 - and is now  listed in one file management program as OSIMG.IMG.  So perhaps I'll try all over again, after erasing the .img that I added first time around, now that I've done a reset.<<

The OS file should be called OS.IMG (it's not case sensitive, as far as I know). No other filename will work. Also, the mBook will only load a particular version of the netbook OS; if your mBook refuses to install the OS from os.img, then this is probably the wrong version.

Cheers, Ian.

Melvin,

There's something wrong in your file name or maybe the file is corrupt. Take a look at http://www.hasbrouck.org/netbook/ and scroll to "Malaybook resources" near the bottom of the page. You will find a link to download the OS file and detailed instructions . Hope this helps!

Dear Melvin,

I am only recently catching up with The Digest. Edward Hasbrouck's website for the netbook gives clear instructions on how to re-install your OS:

http://hasbrouck.org/netbook/

I reproduce here for convenience but I suggest you refer to his site for more details.

  ***********
1.  BACK UP ALL DATA FROM DRIVE C. ALL DATA WILL BE LOST.
2. If you have downloaded the ZIP archive, unzip it.
3. Rename the "malaybook-os.img" file to "OS.img".
4. Copy the OS.img file to the root directory of a CF card.
5. Remove both the main and the backup batteries.
6. Insert the CF card in the "drive D" slot on the left side of the netBook.
7. Replace the batteries.
8. If all goes well, the MalayBook will automatically read and restore the Z and C drives from the image file on the CF card.
**********

Warm regards,

Koi Hin

Subject: Infrared problem

Hi,

When using my MalayBook, I find I can use IR to send contacts to / receive them from my Nokia 6610i phone when I have no CF card installed, and when I have my Lexar 32MB CF installed. However, with my Viking 256MB CF card in, any attempt to send / receive IR in the Contacts app gives a 'Not supported' message.

How can I fix this?

Subject: Favourite 9500 Programs

My favourite / best used programs on the 9500 (besides Calendar and Contacts) are:

1) iDesk - this is a brilliant program and Arjen has been very responsive to suggestions from users.  It has replaced some (but not all) of the Macro 5 macros on my 5mx.  The fact that its freeware is an added bonus.  My PINs etc are only ever a few key strokes away also and it closes the password screen automatically when you close the device.

2) Projekt from www.kylom.com was originally installed on my machine as a replacement for Jotter on my 5mx. I choose it over other alternatives because it could import and export text files.  But it is much more than a Jotter replacement.  The outlining facility is brilliant and it is now able to exchange information both ways with my desktop PIM TreePAd.  It is now also starting to replace the To-Do lists on the Calendar application as it is possible to cross out an entry with a single key stroke.  I also love the single key hot-keys e.g. press "n" to edit a note for an entry. I can also send a single entry along with its attached note as a small text file to my PC via Blue-tooth, thereby replacing CopyAnyWhere

9) This is the third most used app on my 9500 but I put it at No. 9 as it is a bit frustrating to use sometimes.  Remote S80 is brilliant, when it works! It is not only a complete replacement for
CopyAnyWhere, but it also allows me to use my 9500 without taking it out of my brief case!  I bought Remote S80 purely for the CopyAnyWhere replacement, but I have found being able to look up a contact on my 9500 through the PC is great.  The PC app seems to be a bit flaky as it often loses the Blue-tooth connection and refuses to recognize COM6, even though my other Bluetooth software says the port is operating properly.  When that issue is sorted, it will be a "must have" app.

Martin O'Neill

Hi Steve,

I think you got me a bit wrong. There is no intention whatsoever from my side to in any shape or form slam the 9500. It's superior technology, no question about that. And, the soul of the 5mx is still very much present within the 9500. I would recommend anyone which has any doubts about the viability of continuing using a 5mx to upgrade to the 9500. It's the only convincing choice. And most of what you learnt from the 5mx is still relevant on the 9500.

>I'll bet I can get 10 words into my 9500 from a standing start faster than you and your Psion. The keyboard's >not *that* much worse 8-)

Ok, let's do it next time we meet. Looking forward...:-) Let's make a show of it at the next Symbian Pub-meet...

>>Interesting discussion, but I thought I ought to put forward points in the 9500's defense. And you haven't mentioned any of the 20 or so ways in which the 9500 kicks the Psion 5mx's butt...<<

No need, because my intention was not to kick the 9500's butt (if it has any). My intention was merely to explain some reasons why I'm still a 5mx user and will remain one. I might get a 9300i next year. We'll see.

Kind regards

Re.: Mobile device comparator - Thanks for this comparator, although for me it did not give the results I thought to be right for me. After answering all the questions the Nokia 9500 and 9300 came as first and second, but in fact I still prefer the P910i I have at the moment. Eight machines come within a range of 171 to 188 points which is not really a significant difference or is it ?  Last thought, the price is hard to compare as one can get considerable discounts when renewing a contract at the same time. Still, a nice idea, thanks.

Re.: www.iyhy.com - That is a neat little website. Are you still able to use the options on a page once read via this website ?  For example, could i use it to do online banking ?

Answer to: Max Ozinsky

Re.: Idesk - Are you telling us that this program will allow the user to create, record and use macros on the 9500 ?  In OPL format ? Could I ask you to write some more about this program and how you use it ?  If it is true that it truly replaces Macro5 that might be a decisive factor for some people to switch to the 9500.

Answer to: Martin Maxwell Harnevie

Re.: 25 reasons for the 5MX - I agree with a lot of your reasons and that is why I continue to use my mBook. However, with Handyday 2005 I find the diary on the P910i just as good or better than the EPOC one and find it very easy to have my diary and contacts with me at all times even when a 5MX would have been too big to take with me (social visits in the evening, concerts, theatre, etc). It is also very handy to be able, when needed, to check your email just with the phone. Therefore I support the combination of mBook with P910i. However, I am not sure about the P990 as the screen will be considerably smaller again which I find a distinct disadvantage.

Hurrah! Another netpad user. I think that makes two of us now.

>1) Can the system be upgraded with WLAN?

I don't think so as it could well be a motherboard and case change which would leave you with the screen, battery and the pen!

>2) plBeam (registered) won't install in control panel. I know I
>can use the plBeam application, but I'd like to use the system
>screen instead.

I had the same problem. I guess it needs some re-writing to fix it for netpad hardware. I doubt it will happen I'm afraid :-(

>3) The battary gauge is totally out of sync.

Have you tried the following:
1 Clean the battery contacts.
2 Reafix battery.
3 Reset the netpad (open the flap and press the button)
4 Clean the charging/docking contacts.
5 Charge the netpad.

You should get a light on the docking station to let you know the netpad is charging. Mine can also be erratic at times. Lion cells don't like being run flat.

Sounds like the screen cable is kaput. Can you see anything with the case partially closed? Your only option is <www.Psionflexi.com> as Pos won't (or at least wouldn't when I had one) touch Ericsssons.

Good luck backing it up in braile....

Guys

seeing as there's been an upturn in netpad interest I thought I'd ask this...

What large (>128Mb) MMC cards work well with a netPad?

I've done ok with a 64Mb Viking, but neither of a 128Mb Jessops (too slow - afflicting the whole machine) or a 256Mb Integral (gave write errors all the time) have proved satisfactory.

Steve - you may be right but there are some particular programs that are just NOT available for the 9500
case in point - a DOS emulator - for me this is a number 1 critical program
This makes the 9500 worthless to me

Daniele's advice turned the trick.  The version of OS.IMG that I had backed up was a year more recent and longer than Itamar's.  So I went through hasbrouck's site and downloaded another version - older than mine and longer than Itamar's - and everything sprang back to life. AND - I'm showing a message advising me to replace the backup battery, which is no doubt the original source of the problem.  I've put the Mbook on external power and will buy a new battery ASAP.
Thank you all.  What a relief!
