Re.: Serial to USB - Interesting, with me it was the other way around. I bought a converter from another make (forgot which one) which did not work and than bought a Belkin which did work without any problems ... .

Re.: Backup - Just a very wild guess. It could be that by coincidence he has got a file with exactly the same name already on his PC and than Psiwin recognises this and tells him the file is open as the error. I seem to remember vaguely having such a problem once upon a time.

Re.: Psion 5mx Pro - Interesting stuff, keep it coming ! I still find my mBook great for use in meetings, switching on and off at will to write something down.

How can this be done? I use PDF+ and it is described as a PDF reader. It doesn't seem to have any ability to create PDF files. Also, in the print options there is no PDF printer to enable the creation of PDFs. Being able to create PDFs on the Psion would be great, but I don't see how it can be done. Or have I got hold of the 'wrong end of the stick' here.

Yes. All Psions store their "silk screen" apps (which you call the "bottom
row toolbar") as part of the prefs file used for the Extras bar. Therefore
restoring the preferences of one Psion model on another will cause the
silkscreen to get seriously messed-up! But the prefs file will only be read
after a soft reset, hence your surprise.
Luckily I have written a little program which allows you to edit the Extras
bar, including the silk screen row. You can download it here:
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3031
You can read about it here:

Any problems, feel free to email me. Digest readers can get my email
address from the web page email.cshandley.co.uk , although it ought to be
included in the download readme (assuming that I included one!).

Get rid of c:\System\Shell\shell.ini and do a soft reset immediately after.

Yes, because you copied that file too. You obviously didn't do a soft reset after the restore. That's ER5, resets aren't very common...

Subject: Opera basics
I've finally got wi-fi set up on my MalayBook, after a long period in which my Cisco AiroNet card crashed the MB whenever I tried to connect. I had to take my courage in both hands, because I needed to hard-reset the MB, which I'd never done before. In the end there were no problems – well, apart from one or two heart-stopping moments when it looked as if the MB wouldn't reboot – and now I'm in wireless heaven. Thanks, Itamar, for the advice that a hard reset was needed.
Now I've got a couple of basic Opera questions. (Being a MalayBook, the Opera version is of course fixed at v3.62(1.04).):
– Is it possible to save the text on a Web page as a decently formatted Word document? At present I either keep it as an Opera file or have to slog through the Word version converting tabs to paragraph ends.
And is it really impossible to edit bookmark names? At present I've got several bookmarks called 'Main Page', which isn't helpful.

Subject: Agenda Problem
>If before a soft reset I click on the agenda silkscreen button, nothing happens still, but if I then look at open programs, it shows not only "Agenda", but "agenda".<
I once had a similar problem only I had about 6 "Agenda" entries in my list of open programs. I actually run multiple agendas (5 in total) but they all have unique names so should show up as "Agenda Agenda", "Agenda Personal" or "Agenda Shared" etc. One day I had 6 "Agenda Agenda" entries on the open programs list but when I tried to access any of them all I got was a "Not Found" message. This happened after synchronisation. My routine is to leave multiple Agenda files open all the time and backup, followed by sync with Outlook on two separate computers and I suppose the Psion must have got confused one day. Anyway, I closed all the Agenda files, made a copy of the Agenda file (for safety's sake) and re-synchronised. All was OK. So my suggestion is to try synchronising with Outlook to see if you can "rescue" your appointments that way. As an alternative, or if that doesn't work, I always find that the program called "PC Agenda" will allow me to extract any Psion Agenda entries to view, edit and save. The save only works in Series 3c format but you can then convert it back to S5 using PsiWin. It's an incredibly useful program to have anyway because, apart from anything else, it lets you print your year planner at full A4 size! If you haven't got it, get it here: http://www.maison.demon.co.uk/pcagenda.htm

Hi Susan
I run www.psionflexi.co.uk and have seen this many times whilst repairing Psion's. It is usually caused by a crack in the touch screen or your flexi being about to fail. Hope that helps.
