The P990i sounds like it's what I could imagine might succeed if not replace the MX... But it's been "coming soon" for about 6 months or more... Does anyone have some info on it?

Subject: Re: S5 to Mac iCal
I wanted to contribute to this Mac discussion by outlining my recent success in synchronising Psion 5 Agenda with iCal (Mac OSX calendar). With apologies: this doesn't directly address the original post.
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/home/384/aSync/aSync.html
Check this site. Install <MD5.OPX> on Psion 5. Install <aSync> on Psion Transfer <iCal> file (.ics) from Mac to Psion
Select <Agenda> file and <iCal> file for sync
Set starting date and entry types for sync
aSync creates new Agenda file, new iCal file and backup Agenda file Transfer iCal file back to Mac
Having set it up once the process is automated for further sync sessions. You may detect my surprised tone when I report that this works. In years of using wonderful Psion machines I have rarely been happy with the sync options, even on PC. To find that this routine works on Mac OSX was a revelation.
And thanks for a great list.

MacConnect sucks indeed - and I never had any luck connecting my old S3a to an old Mac using it. The earlier PsiMac software was not bad however: unfortunately I don't have a copy to offer. Anyway PsiMac certainly would not work with OS X - nor would MacConnect.

Subject: Password generator
Hi to all Psioneers
Some years ago I had a freeware program which generated passwords on my 5mx. For some reason I removed this from my machine and have forgotten its name and where I got it from. I am now looking for this program again. As far as I remember it was written by a Portuguese-speaker from Brazil. Does anyone know where I can get it?
Regards from rainy Cape Town

>> I'd be very interested to hear your expert opinions.<<
I am not an expert but I have been using an XDA Exec (the O2 version of HTC
Universal) since December, after owning several Psions (two 3a, 5mx, Revo,
Mako…) and I am very happy with it. Between the Psions and the XDA, I used
a Sony Clie UX50 but I could never get to like the Palm OS, after the
excellent Symbian one. Lots of horrors have been said and written about
Windows Mobile 5 but it is good enough for me.
This machine is absolutely great. Word and Excel applications come with the
machine and are much much better than the Doc2Go that I had to purchase for
the UX50, which was absolutely dreadful IMHO. Especially the D2G Excel,
where you have to wait so much between each operation, as it is so slow. It
also had PowerPoint.
Email, Calendar, Contacts, Notes and Tasks sync perfectly with Outlook 2003.
I sync with my Vaio laptop using Bluetooth.
When you call on the mobile telephone (on UTMS (3rd generation) only, this
feature does not work with 2nd gen GPRS) someone who also owns a videophone,
you can see his face on the screen. I use it as a mobile telephone with the
Bluetooth headset Motorola Motostart h700, very light (I often forget that I
am wearing it) and discrete (it disappears under my hair) and when I travel
I can charge both machines (XDA & Headset) with the same very light and
small charger (Versa Charger with airplane option) that works in places,
cars, and 110/220V current.
I also use it as MP3 player and camera. The screen is very good. I have
added a 1GB memory card.
It is WiFi enabled which is very convenient to connect anywhere when I
travel to take/send my email and browse websites. The battery life is quite
good. I charge it every other day. The charger is light and small.
I got it online with an O2 subscription for about UKP150 with a UKP19 per
month texter contract that gives me 300 Txts and 75Min. You can choose the
talker contract that gives you less Txts and more minutes.
I see that you are in London. I’ll be back in London at the end of this
week, if you want to have it in hand and play with it, please let me know,
I’ll be glad to help.

Reply to Hugh Dibley
I have the HTC Universal in the form of the Imate Jasjar which I have
been using for about 6 months, I arrived at this point via a number of
different PDAs shown below.
My original PDA was a Psion 3a, the 5mx then Netbook I then tried a
Nokia 9210i phone/pda alongside a Sharp Zaurus SL-C760 PDA, I then tried
to merge the phone, PDA & satnav functions using the Imate Jasjar. I
have found this unsatisfactory so I have purchased a Sharp Zaurus
SL-C3200 to use alongside the Jasjar.
IMATE JASJAR
It can't open complex Word & Excel files, it will try to convert them
when they are transferred from the PC but you still can't open all
documents, also you must save as a new document if you make any Edits.
It is possible to get around this by purchasing alternative word
processors & spreadsheet applications from www.softmaker.com.
You can only open a single document within any application so you can't
for instance open 2 Word files.
You can't print anything.
All PIM data including contacts, appointments & e-mails are stored in a
single file which can only be located on internal storage, I frequently
run out of space.
The Psion & Nokia converts all files so they take up much less space on
the PDA, the Jasjar & Zaurus do not convert so you need to allow about
x8 times more storage space.
Most files can be stored on the storage card but not all applications
allow you to load files from any directory, you can use file manager to
load most files.
You need to budget for additional software which will add a significant
additional cost.
Similar keyboard to the Nokia 9300/9500 so difficult to tell when your
finger moves off a key.
No keyboard shortcuts so no Control C to copy etc., there is no Control
key.
Have to use the Fn key to access symbols rather than the Shift key you
use on your PC.
Battery life 24-48 hours.
Takes 2-3 rings before indicating an incoming call.
Have to turn on to see if you have missed a call, appointment or check
for SMS messages.
Main support web site is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/.
SHARP ZAURUS
Can open more files than the Jasjar, on par with the Nokia, can use
softmaker word processor to open any Word document & can open multiple
documents at the same time (Jasjar version can only open single doc).
Has CF & SD memory card slots, the SL-C3200 also has a 6GB hard disk,
can view/copy files from any camera that supports CF or SD card formats.
Card slots can also be used for Wifi & BT cards.
Can't print anything.
No decent finance or satnav applications.
Uses Sharp version of LINUX other versions available to download, most
software & all operating systems are free, main support web site is at
http://www.oesf.org, one of many sites offering cheap/free software is
at http://www.handheld-linux.com/swi/index.php.
Product intended for the Japanese market you need to convert to English
or purchase from an importer that will convert it for you, such as
www.trisoft.de or www.conics.net. Older models such as the C1000 or
C3100 have better English conversions such as Cacko ROM, C1000 does not
have a hard disk, C3100 has 4GB disk.
PIM synchronisation a bit messy & basic, free alternatives available but
you then have to sync twice.
SL-C3200 has USB host facility so it is possible to connect USB devices
such as USB memory sticks USB card readers etc., as long as they don't
take too much power from the Zaurus, unusual even slightly devices will
require configuration to work.
Similar keyboard to Nokia 9210 so gaps between the keys, except keys are
much larger.
True 640 x 480 screen & it swivels like the Jasjar.
Similar size to the Jasjar but much squarer, Zaurus fits inside my
Jasjar leather case.
Battery life 3-5 days.
Hope this helps.

Subject: HTC Universal,
Answer to: Hugh Dibley
Re.: HTC Universal - The few websites I looked at show a release date of Q3 earliest in the UK, so interesting the guy in the airplane already had one. The main difference is probably that the 5MX was a computer only while the current devices are a combination of phone, computer and camera (and more). However, technology developes quickly and requirements change accordingly.
In March I made two business trips to Germany and Holland and my phone bill came to over 300 pounds from which almost 130 pounds was data traffic (GPRS). Last month I went on holiday for 1-1/2 weeks and another 2 days in Germany and took a laptop with me. Some hotels give free broadband, others charge around Euro 15.- a day. For that amount you can email as much as you like as well as log in to the PC at the office and work remotely as if you are in the office. Secondly, with Skype you can phone all your contacts (office, home, etc) for absolutely free and/or make very cheap phone calls in Europe for Euro 0.017 / minute. This I can't do on a Psion anymore while the phone/PDA combinations are also not really suitable. Accordingly I switched to a laptop and use my mBook less than before. It travels with me in the same bag as my laptop.

Subject: Alarmed!
Hi Folks,
Chris (Kantarjiev), I haven’t tried to get the built-in alarm sounds out of any of my SiBO machines but I seem to remember that some aren’t actually files, rather they’re functions.
But I’ll look.
It means installing a file manager that can see the ROM. John Boyce’s “JBTree” can but the 3cs “Files” application can’t. I’ll also install “JBTree” on the 3a emulator (I should have already) and see if that has the sound as as .WVE (SiBOs sound format).
If I can extract the file (if it exits) I’ll be happy to send it. But the 5mx ‘soft bells’ sound is the same as far as I can tell and that’s easy. I can send that as a (zipped) .WAV.
Happy days,
Phil.
