Can anybody please tell me how you do the old fashioned 'paste
special' in the Nokia 9500 Sheet ?

At the moment, the only way I have found of copying just data without
the underlying formulas is by doing a copy/paste via Document. Not
very intuitive.

Thanks in advance.

MD: If it's any comfort many of us paid for a subscription and only saw one or two issues.
Can you ask paypal to refund your money ?.

There's also Palmtop User
www.palmtop.co.uk and a magazine called Pda Essentials but neither of them feature Psion anymore.

Palmtops publication is slow and erratic but new issues do occasionally emerge.

Pda Essentials now has a new owner after closing down recently and is published monthly.

That's why we all subscribed to Psion Computer Journal as we all wanted a Psion magazine.

Thank you all for all the information I have gleaned about my Psions over the years, i now need help directly from you.
I have a second hand netbook.
Lovely
Recently, after a long spell of neglect, never having used it for months, I fired it up to find all batteries flat.
I replaced the stand-by battery and recharged it. Great, all is in order now.
That was last Monday, by Sunday, the main battery is reading 12.2 volts but the backup battery is flat.
OK so I may have bought a duff battery, assuming I haven't, what can flatten the backup battery and leave the main one fully charged?
Cheers,
George Nash

I would recommend you give both a try. They both have a good record for speed and security. Firefox, out of the box, is a little more bloated than a basic Opera installation with no Java. A lot of the features that are extensions to Firefox come with Opera. I would say there is little to choose between them although the fact that institutions such as banks are now favouring Firefox might be a consideration.

As regards Palm, despite many misgivings and some truly horrible moments, I have persisted and am just moving from a Tungsten T5 to a Palm Treo 650. I have to say this little machine has been delightful so far. I have come to rely on the marvellous DateBk5 to the extent that when the Palm sync lets me down I really start to suffer. What other phone provides seamless sync to both Outlook on Windows and iCal on OS X?

Steve

So is it a replacement form my battered 5mx?

Does it multi-task?

Is Data available?

Sorry?  Phased out?  When did this happen?????  Does that mean no more Communicators?

BTW, I tried looking up YData recently, and none of Yellow Computing's software seems to be available to buy.  Have they gone under?

Subject: Firefox vs Opera

I use Firefox (in prefererence to Internet Explorer. It's main advantages are it is much more secure than IE6 and it provides Tab browsing (open links in a separate tab using a right click). the main disadvantage of Firefox is that it is very memory hungry, a bit more than IE6.  I am told that Opera is the fastest browser of all three and also provides tab browsing and mouse gestures - so probably worth trying. Of course IE7 is out - but I think Opera & Firefox are preferable at the moment.

Although I don't know the buy behind PCJ personally, I very much doubt you have lost your money.  Rather, the guy seems to often "disappear" for ages before another issue is released very late.  In one case this was apparently due to hospitilisation, although in general I think he is just a very busy guy, and probably finds the PCJ a rather difficult job (I know I would!).

I'm still expecting Issue 3 to appear eventually, and hopefully you'll get a reply around then...

Perhaps someone more in-the-know can give better info?

Hi Folks,

Jim (Watson-Gove), I've used FireFox and have no hesitation in saying it's worth trying, It's from the Mozilla stable and very good.

David (Ford), Will Green, the guy behind PCJ, has bitten off rather more than he can comfortably chew. I haven't received issue 3 either - and it's been a l-o-n-g time now. But I'm optimistic that issue 3 *will* get to me, maybe issue 4 too.

Take care,
Phil.

Answer to: Jim Watson-Gove

Re.: Firefox vs Opera - My fathers' bank told him to install Mozilla firefox as he had problems connecting to the bank. I downloaded it on my laptop and tried it out but cannot see much difference between IE and Firefox. I don't have many problems with IE. On the Psion I hardly ever use a web browser as it is much too slow and cannot open all pages anyhow.

Re.: black magic - Maybe this was "black magic" ?  Anyhow, that was an expensive opera !

Answer to: David Ford

Re.: Psion Computer journal - I think the owner/publisher was a Psion enthousiast like most of us and had good intentions. However, I think it grew above his head and he most probably underestimated the work involved. I can't tell you whether he still subscribes to this digest or not but if so he might read your email and do something about it. Personally I think one should be careful to publish negative information about others until you are very sure that it is correct.

Re.: Problem with mobile modem and Psion 5mx - I am not sure but the least you should give us are the details of which phone you use and which ISP. Could it be the ISP changed something in their settings ? By the way, if I am not mistaken the mobility upgrade was for the S5 and not the 5MX ?

Re.: E61  - While I appreciate that this machine will be in direct competition with the blackberry and similar devices, I can't see how this would be able to replace a Psion. I can't imagine serious working on a WORD or SHEET document on a small screen like that for a longer period of time and without a proper keyboard. I am sure it has many advantages and will appeal to a lot of people, but those people will probably have their laptop or notebook somewhere tucked away in their luggage or bags for any more serious working. Just my own personal view.

Subject: Cell phone compatible with 5mx and netBook

Somebody has been ripping out all the payphones I depend on when I am away from the office. Guess I will have to break down finally and get a cell phone. I'd been holding out thinking I could get a Nokia 9500 but I could never find one locally in the US since none of the major cell phone providers offers them. Not willing to pay the money without being able to try it, since the only reason I would get it would be if I could type on it fast enough to take notes (I have small fingers, but not particularly accurate ones). Now it looks like the 9500 is being phased out anyway.

Are there any small phones that can sync with my 5mx or netBook and act as a modem with them? That kind of information does not seem to be listed on the company websites. I would rather carry around a tiny phone and my 5mx than a Blackberry type device. Just don't see the point in thumb keyboarding . . .

Probe either browsers! U can import/export your settings, bookmarks,

I do it;) Opera simply faster (?) and I like the inside email-client (all
of my non-businesslike emails check/send.) and "easy-going" surface;)
Firefox is a fast, ql browser with a lot of plugin... and now, the 2nd
place of browsers!

Subject: 1GB MMC problem

Answer to Chris Handley:

I too have had problems with an 'Ora' MMC card from Expansys.  I bought their 2GB 'Ora' MMC card for my Nokia 9500.  When it arrived, I was surprised to see the extra connections.  One thing I noticed was that it was designated 'MMC+', though there was no metion of this on the Expansys.com website when I bought it.  Perhaps the '+' denotes a new standard which is supposed to be backwardly compatible with normal MMC slots.

I did not try the new MMC in a card reader.  I found that it seemed to work OK in my 9500 but then I started getting mysterious freezes, which only happened when accessing the card but not every time.  Fortunately, Expansys gave me a full refund, so credit to them.

Simon Jeffree
