Subject: Mocha PPP
After DSLink I also tried Mocha PPP, discribed at http://home.wanadoo.nl/thomas.vanderzijden/reviews/mocha/mocha.html and downloaded at http://www.tucows.com/preview/58702
Same problem as with DSLink: email, nor web asks for connection (should be a pop up window).
Is it because I use (A)DSL via USB internet on the PC (XP)?
Or is it because I have PC-mail installed on the 5mx when I installed PsiWin on the PC?
Other reasons why it doesn't work?

In my experience Data sort works very well and I use it all the time. Perhaps you are sorting with only one character. To change goto: Menu>Tools>Change labels>Select the field you want>Click on edit>Click on Options>The second option allows you to define the number of characters to use when sorting (the default is one).
You can do this for all the sort fields (upto 3). I tend to use between five and ten characters depending on the results.
I hope this helps

Subject: RE: Jotter & "Notes" on MS Outlook
Dear all
I note from Eric Lindsay's site http://www.ericlindsay.com/epoc/bdata5.htm that Revo's "Jotter", which I use quite a lot for general notes & for keeping technical details on equipment, is actually a formatted Data file. I am also a keen user of the similar "Notes" in MS Outlook, which I use for keeping web-site login information, and a few technical details . I already synchronise Agenda & "Calendar", and occasionally synch "Contacts" between the two machines (quite rarely, because contacts seem to get duplicated for no apparent reason).
Could someone please tell me if there is a way of synchronising Jotter with Outlook's Notes?
Many thanks

I have a solid and reliable SH 888 as well as a Motorola Timeport
free to any good home. Both have served well paired with various
Psions. I am reluctant to bin them but since deserting the fold and
buying a SE p910 I no longer use them I do not know what the
batteries are like as they have been left in a drawer for months.
Please mail me direct if anyone is interested. Chargers etc included. Tony Napier

Foreign outlets & plugs
You and others might find the "Interpower Guide to Worldwide Plug/Socket Patterns & Power Mains (single phase)" of interest. Take a look at
http://www.interpower.com/pcc/guide.htm . I can't remember how or when I came across it but it might help fill in a few blanks!

DSLink & USB ADSL & 5mx
It seems likely that others will answer this better than I but here's a couple of tips. First, make sure your remote link is off (Psion) and the PsiWin Connection Server (the squiggly line) is not running on the PC (exit it by right-clicking on the connection icon on the task bar, and selecting 'Close'). Then run DSLink and double click its icon. Make sure you choose the correct serial port. I have used both DSLink and Mocha PPP with a USB ADSL modem on a 5mx and 7Book and it works fine. However, I often found that if I connected with either an email or browser program on the PC then tried to connect the Psion, it wouldn't work. The only way to clear the problem was to reboot the PC and connect the Psion first. Hope this helps but for an excellent guide to making DSLink work on a Revo see
http://www.revoworld.com/dbShownews.asp?ID=352 - it talks about a dialup connection on the PC at the end but an ADSL connection is sufficiently similar not to be a problem.
Having said all that I tended to prefer using Mocha PPP!

Modern Mobile Phone
I know you want a mobile phone with a large screen and others have given you excellent suggestions. However, I'm a big fan of having a small phone with me always and my Psion only when I need it. I use the Psion for computer type applications and my phone for communications - of many types. I extolled the virtues of the Nokia 6230i last December and it still fits the bill for me. If you were to use the Psion for GPS work (as I do, but acknowledging that its maps are now a minimum of 4 years out of date unless you can make your own) then the 6230i might work for you too. Below I repeat what I said then (suitably updated). Hope it's of interest.
I have long been a fan of Nokia for many of the reasons that I'm a fan of Psion - simplicity, intuitiveness and, well, the ability to get the job done. But I have never really been a fan of having both a Psion and a communicator type phone. My need is a means to check email and access the web at a reasonable speed as part of a two-box approach, and my choice is a Nokia 6230i. It has infrared, for compatibility with older devices but also has bluetooth for talking to your laptop/ desktop/ other phones/ devices.
It can send and receive files directly from the 5mx (piBeam needed on the Psion) and it's fairly straightforward to set up GPRS and GSM
communications - assuming you've got Opera on your Psion and smtpauth for email if you need it, you're all set. Phoneman Pro is a breeze to use to send SMS and check contacts and much more. BTW, to those that need their communicators for their contacts, all my contacts, calendar and tasks are synced with my Nokia 6230i and Psion - I simply choose which device to take with me, usually the phone at all times, the Psion less so - e.g. not to the pub!
I love my 6230i as it's such a good companion and has a combination of features that you'll find hard to replicate in any other phone. I originally chose it (the 6230) because it was the only Nokia (and still is, as far as I can see) with irDA, Bluetooth, FM radio and MP3 player (512MB card - 100+ tunes) - I even have an adapter to plug it into the car cassette slot! I don't know about other makes but I've never seen such a combination elsewhere, though I'm sure it must exist. But many new phones don't have irDA if they have the other features as it's probably regarded as obsolescent technology now. Other essential features for me are 1.3 megapixel camera, Contacts, Calendar etc, Web and Email. One can even IM (instant message) should one wish to!
I suspect that I'll remain a two box person for some time yet simply because there will always be places where a communicator (i.e. phone) cannot be used and because there will always be other times when I need the smallest device practicable - yet I still have my contacts and calendar with me. I see nothing that comes anywhere close to my present combination within those parameters.
Best wishes
Austin

1- can I run both nokias software and psion software on the same pc without sycn. problems?
2- would i be able to beam a pdf file from netbook to 9500
3- Does Docs To Go support tables in a word doc, even after its been sycn a couple of times? Is Docs To Go really as good as it says?
4- can I email a doc to my netbook and open it without problems? (I do use nConvert)
5- Does web browsing support banking online?
6- can I print any doc I want by sending it out to a fax machine, using Nokias fax printing? (such as Word, Excell, PDF file ect...)

9-Where can I buy one here in the US that will give and live up to a warranty?
10- would I be able to use the IR port between netbook and 9500 to receive emails on my netbook

Itamar,
My apologies if I am stating the obvious, but it sounds as though your repair included a hard reset. So, although the "Cisco RLAN" entry is still there (it is a system default), have you restored all your Cisco RLAN and Internet service settings?
As I said, its a bit obvious but sometimes the obvious eludes us simply because it is 'obvious'.

Dear Martin, Norbert and Itamar,
thank you SO MUCH for your prompt & kind answers !!!
:-)
By the way I love (!) the P910 but ...I was looking for something not so ...expensive...and most of all, I firstly want to verify the Ir connectivity with these ...modern phones...
In any case, following Martin's advice, I installed plBeam 1.30F (from psiloc.com) and I also installed Mobile Connectivity Update 2.00.
Sending/receiving a small .jpg file (via the Ir port) between my MC218 and a Nokia 6600 is OK, but when I try sending also an SMS (!) from the MC218 to the same phone ... absolutely NO WAY !!!
:-(
(while it's instead perfectly OK with my old SH888)!!!
:-(
Can you provide further suggestions about how to solve this connectivity problem?
Thanks and a warm greeting from Rome !

Hi Giorgio,
Are you using PhoneMan for sending SMS?
This will not work since PhoneMan was never made compatible with Symbian phones.
Kind regards

Subject: Re: MochaPPP
Hi Bas,
may be you cannot connect MochaPPP with the Internet after you were running PsiWin.
Try to run MochaPPP immediately after new booting the PC. If MochaPPP works in this case, you must kill some processes, opened by PsiWin and not closed after closing PsiWin (unfortunately PsiWin was made very "dirty").
For that I wrote a BAT file with the following content:
TSKILL Psconsv
TSKILL Expdlg
TSKILL Elogerr
TSKILL Copyany
TSKILL Wprntsvr
TSKILL PRC32ENG
C:\Mppp\mppp.exe
Put this BAT file, named e.g. Mocha.bat, in the Mppp directory (at my PC it's C:\Mppp\), make an icon at the desktop with link to the BAT file, open the mailbox at the Psion machine and then run the BAT file by doubleclick. The BAT file closes all processes and than runs MochPPP.
By this way I'm connecting my PsionS7 to the Internet and sending TheDigest among other things.
BTW: one of our subscribers uses this BAT file to connect a MC218 to the Internet via PC and MochaPPP.
Did you correctly set the Mocha Settings
- appropriate serial port
- Windows CE
- port speed 115200 ?

I've been away for two weeks. When rushing to get away, I put my netBook away without thinking about closing down the open files, let alone doing a complete backup. While on holiday I wondered what data I would lose when the battery went down.
The morning after my return, I've just looked at the netBook: the battery was at almost full power - 12.9 volts.
Full marks to the netBook.
