Subject: Wi-fi failure; Mbook OS; Intel-Macs
1. TO Marcus: Thanks for the reminder. I used
TCPIP_UPDATE_ETHERNET.SIS, and it was indeed the wrong one. But I
have some doubt as to whether TCPIP_UPDATE_NON_ETHERNET.SIS would be
any better. Unfortunately, I can't find the chart which told us
whether and where to install these updates. But at least my wi-fi
cards seem to be working again - EXCEPT I don't have any success in
picking up "hot spots" with either the Buffalo card or the CISCO; but
this is not new.
2. TO Itamar: Thanks. I'm sorry you still have the problem - but you
are quite right about the rule which is proved!
3. TO Melvin Woody: The 281 version of the Mbook OS is on Martin
Guthrie's "Lost & Found" pages; or I can send you a copy if you wish.
4. TO Cyril Catt: I can't confirm that Intel-Macs will run PsiWin,
but my understanding is that it ought to be possible, esp. in the
absolutely latest versions of MacBooks and iMacs (or whatever they
are now called). This possibility, along with all the other great
things about the new Macs, has had me salivating for the last few
weeks and only with great difficulty have I decided that I can't
justify getting rid of my perfectly good eMac - esp. as I am about to
spend some time in the U.K. where I expect to be financially ruined.
IF I had a new MacBook I might be spared the trouble I'm having in
trying to re-install City Maps and RoutePlanner! It is tedious having
to beg a PC user to do me a favour.

To Austin:
Many thanks for your extensive notes on linking the Psion 5mx to a Nokia
6230i and setting the pair up for emailing and surfing. My apologies for not
responding sooner - I didn't receive Digest No 972 directly and only saw your
response when I downloaded it from the site. I'm a tad busy right now, but I'll try the settings when I can find the time and will try to remember to let
you know how I get on.
Thanks again,
Andrew.

Subject: PsiWin after XP
Dear All
I guess that when we are forced to go to Windoze Vista, PsiWin, even the .3.3 version, may not work.
nConvert could be a useful alternative, but I find one disadvantage with it. OK, it will not convert directly to Word, but it does offer rtf. On my Win 2000, when copied across (by saving on a memory card and then downloading from the card onto the PC via a card reader), this comes out as text with the formatting instructions showing in code. Is this the best we can expect, or is it likely that I am doing something incorrectly?
Any ideas welcome.
Best wishes to all

Subject: Nokia 9500 Warrior Virus
Have twice returned my 9500 to local Nokia repair centres one in
Portugal the other here in the UK.
However today I get a phone call (here in the UK) from an irate
Portuguese client complaing that again he had 27 sms messages today.
I have had to shift my SIM card back to my old Nokia 6310 and disable
the phone part of my 9500.
Anybody else had this experience and if so how did they cure it.
I have made my Bluetooth "hidden" which I had hoped would insulate the
phone but apparently not.

Hi Keith,
Thanks for mentioning Sdict; I did not know of it and will try it.

From the S5 programing manual:
[
Files which launch their associated applications when selected are known as documents. The application UID (unique identifier) is stored in the document header which is read by the system. As far as the user is concerned, the UID specifies a document’s type. A non-document file does not have an application UID and is displayed on the system screen with a special icon (a question mark) showing that it is unrecognised. Non-document files are known as external files.
]
Eventually these '?' files do not have the correct document header as it is described here. Eventually, check both file types with an editor. With some hacking abilities and a litte luck, you could hack the files with ?'s into working Sdict documents.
