Subject: Magic message from Owen (off topic)

Hello elder list members,
(others, if not interested, please just skip this msg.)

here is a message from Owen (a former list member) from 19.8.   In consideration of newer members who (do post rarely if at all and) do not know Owen and complained to the list admins I did not pass several intermediate infos.

But this one is good news:

Hi

I have now bought a 36 foot Cheoy Lee Clipper ketch for USD 25000. Here she is:

http://tinyurl.com/qsgtg

She's bit bigger than what I wanted, but I reckon I can manage her as the ketch rig makes each individual sail smaller. I moved aboard yesterday. Now I'm just waiting for the money transfer to complete so I can get the bill of sale (which is why the site says "sale pending" rather than "sold". There was no gas on the boat, so the first hot meal onboard will have to wait until Monday. I looked around today for a cheap camping stove as that would have been handy to have on the boat anyway, but couldn't find one.

Her name was "Dragon Lady", but I can't live with a dragon lady, so I am renaming her "Magic". She needs new sails, new running and standing rigging, a new bowsprit, new batteries, a GPS, a windvane self-steering system etc. etc.

More later.

Owen

The price looks good to me! Sounds like a lot of work until all things are settled, though.

All the best, Owen!

Answer to:  Jon Welford

Re.: Nokia 9550 crash - If your problem is as described by Chris, maybe you can, much like the problem with the back-up batteries on the Psions - put a little piece of paper folded over several times on top of the SIM card to press it down a little more ?  Success.

Answer to: Vlad A

Re.: MX dropped, pls help - Yes, it is definitely possible to snap it back but it is a lot of fiddling and trial and error. You have to open it at abt. 30 degrees and first push one side in. Than you move the scree part up and down a little trying to bend the keyboard slightly to let it snap into place. I remember that I did it at least twice and with a little (or much) patience I succeeded both times. Of course I take no responsibility for your trying it .... success !!

Re.: Sharp Zaurus - Noting that you first looked at your 5MX, did you consider a netBook ?  Ok, no USD, no multimedia player etc. but all the usual Psion advantages with a good colour screen and good to work on your website. For example Pulster sells them refurbished for Euro 350.-.

Re. nConvert - I have got a Dell PC with Windows XP Professional at work and Psiwin works without problems, so does MochaPPP. As to your nConvert answer, send me a sample document. I'll convert it for you in nConvert and send the RTF file back to you so you can see for yourself what it does and does not do. However, before coming Wednesday as I'll be on holiday after that.

Answer : Peter Burke

Re. Backup failure - Just a thought that might be totally wrong. could it be tha tyou have the same file name exactly on the PC and the Psion ?  I remember that that and/or having the same drive names gives problems with backing up. Sorry if it is wrong or doesn't help.

To All

Re. Nokia 9500 - Just had a look at eBay out of interest and note that this phone still fatches a good price of several hundreds of pounds. It looks like an expensive option (or hobby <G>).

Subject: IMAP4 webmail, 9500 info please,

Answer to:  John Morris

Re.: IMAP4 webmail - I am not sure but I don't think this is connected to IMAP but to the device you use. When I usen my P901i for POP3 emailing I download the headers first and than only the messages I want to read. As long as I don't delete the header from my P910 the message stays in the remote mailbox so I can pick it up for example in the evening on a laptop. However, once I delete it from my P910 with the next connection it will be deleted from my remote mailbox as well. I do this with the program called Profimail.

Re. 9500 info please - This digest is an EPOC _and_ Symbian digest and you are most welcome and encouraged to discuss Symbian equipment and sosftware (this includes everybody of course).       As to your question, there are no "pan-European" cheap SIM cards available AFAIK and your best bet I think is to purchase one i Italy. But, why do you need a separate SIM card for Wifi contact ?  Does Wifi not connect your Nokia 9500 straight to whatever wireless network you want to use and you pay that network if it does not come free ?  AFAIK that does not go via the SIM card.

Subject: USB Serial Adapter

I'm trying to connect my Revo synch cradle with a notebook that has neither a serial nor an infrared port, using a USB Serial adapter, and I simply cannot get it to work. After googling around a bit I found that some users had managed to connect their Psion with a RS232 Serial USB Adapter, and others have not. Psion says on www.mypsionsupport.com: "Q: Can I connect my Psion to a USB port? A: Yes. Although not officially supported, various companies make USB to serial converters which should work fine provided they emulate a serial port." These things are not all that cheap, so I tried it out in a shop. Brand new adapter, straight out of the box. The WinXP laptop recognised the USB cable, but PsiWin 233 did not recognise the Revo. The variables, as far as I can see, are: 1) Driver: I tried both the driver recommended on the Expansys site (http://tinyurl.com/l5dlf) as well as the driver that comes with the adapter (I think they're actually the same). 2) Comm port. I tried activating all in PsiWin, as well as only the one identified in the Windows Device Manager. 3) Speeds: I tried them all, including the slowest setting, or the speed set in the Device Manager. Obviously I'm missing something. Yes, the Revo was switched on and set to cable ;-). All other programs were shut down (even though that's not a factor when synching via my PC serial port). I've read in some groups that "it's a fact of life that sometimes the connection works, and sometimes it doesn't". Does all this mean that I need to try out various adapters until I find one that works? Someone else blames PsiWin: "I should warn you that whereas most utilities that communicate via real COM ports (using the windows driver) will work quite happily with the virtual port created by these devices, there is the odd one that just does not want to know about them, probably because it tries to talk direct to the real port which 'aint there. Others can be a bit awkward and operate in bursts (Psion's Psi Win is notorious for this)." Yet someone else got results by re-installing PsiWin. In short, I get the definite feeling that the USB adapter solution is fraught with problems. Judging by the postings I've read so far there's no set solution. But I'm still hopeful. I'm appealing to that massive collective knowledge base knows as The Digest Readers - any help would be much appreciated, and maybe someone can come up with a new cunning plan? Subject: + prefix on positive numbers

I know sheet displays negative numbers prefixed with a - sign, is it
possible to easily have sheet put a + sign before positive numbers
automatically?

I found the following link for excel http://www.excelforum.com/showthread.php?t=572870
but sheet doesn't have a custom option in the format number?

Any help greatly appreciated,
