Subject: RE: when did you start using Psion
Hi, all, psioneers,
I was very very late comer on the use of psion.
I first saw the psion series 5 when i was studying in the UK... nearly 20 years ago? is that possible?
Since then i really wanted to buy one.
Even much longer before buying it, I suscribed to the digest, and look many psion websites often.
I also suscribed to the Psion magasine, and really enjoyed reading it on anticipation of one day buying my little psion5
Everytime i would stop at an airport i would have a look to the shops to see if the prices where going down :)
I had a closer look and tried a 5mx at home, and i was sure there was not a better PDA than the psion5.
Even if i wanted to own one of this little gadgets i did not have an urgent use for it, since all my jobs involved to be next to a computer and i had computer at home, too, so I did not need a mobile partner. It was easier to work on the nearest PC connected to the internet.
I finally bought 5mx on 2002, when i moved to work and live in Korea.
I suppose i needed to buy something nice.
I ordered a new one from ebay, from a whole seller retailer. It worked wonderfully, never used.
And i do agree with everyone who thinks that this machine were ahead of its time.
They are amazing. It is no only what they do, it is with what little space, memory, and battery consumption they do it.
I really treat it like gold, as i heard about the easy to break screan cable and hinges, etc.. but to be honest i have not had many situations to use it. Additionally, due to several reasons, i struggled to connect the psion to a PC.
For instance i could never managed to connect it to our XP laptop.
When finally i had everything set and working on win 2000, my school changed to XP and again i have not yet been able to connect the psion to the PC.
But well, I know that is me, who is probably doing sthing wrong. :(
What i have working really well is the 5mx in combination with an infrared canon bjc printer. Really good combo.
So, yes, ahead of its time then and still great machines impossible to match for certain applications.
I really wish that the engineers who designed this machines had kept working on this line for many years.
Great users group and great digest

Subject: Re: The Digest V1 # 1005
Hello All,
Itamar et al, belated congrats on #1000. Keep on truckin'. Thanks.
Now to business....
I had to perform a hard reset recently as my Opera browser hung, and only showed an error message. So, I rigourously backed up all my data, unplugged the batteries, and pressed the reset button. (BTW, I always hold my breath when I do this, don't know why).
Anyhow, all my apps have come back on line ok except for 'Contacts'.
I can see the previous COntacts.cdb file in System\Data, but when I run Contacts I get an error message
"Contacts store not found
The Contacts store was not found on disc C
Close Contacts /// Create new store"
I think I had this problem before, and my only workaround was to laboriously open the invisible Contacts.cdb file in a text editor and copy out all the names etc by hand.
But as a couple of years have passed since then and my Contacts database is now rather large; I am very reluctant to undergo this again.
Q. How can I convince Contacts to read the previous .cdb file?
Q. Can I manually edit the .cdb file to be seen by Contacts?
Q. Is this an error with some of the installation files (.ini)?
Q. How can I prevent this from happening again? (FYI, I often back up data to a CF card, and every quarter to my RiscOS hardrive).
Thanks for your help.
kind regards
Peter

Subject: Starting with Psion
I got my first Psion in 1999, when my son's doctor suggested he use a
computer in school (ADHD), and I didn't want to get him something that
he could load games onto (disclosing my ignorance about EPOC freeware,
obviously) and the stand-alone word processors were junky and expensive.
We happened to see a 5 on display in a computer store, and the keyboard
was so much better than anything else of the same size that we leaped at
it. During the summer, I tried his and liked it, and bought one for
myself. Then the 5mx came out and I went for it, donating mine to my
husband (which he used for quite a while). When Psion stopped marketing
them, I bought a Mako and a spare 5mx -- my husband switched to the Mako
because he used only the agenda and liked the size better, and I used
the extra 5mx as my backup during repairs. I have had only one major
breakdown (the dreaded screen cable problem) with my 5mx - the old 5
died a few times and I let it go gracefully. The Mako is still working,
but my husband has switched to an iQue for the GPS and calendar
function. My son has long since migrated to an iBook (Apple).
Now, I have a Blackberry for e-mail (because that's all my office
supports), a cell phone (because I don't like the cell carrier for the
Blackberry service), and my 5mx (because I don't like the Palm format
for calendar, word, sheet, etc). I'd love to achieve full convergence
if that's possible. T-Mobile doesn't seem to offer any EPOC-based
smartphones in the US. I'm considering changing jobs, and would love to
know if anyone has achieved full functionality with a single product
that is about the size of a 5mx and has a decent keyboard.

Subject: XP / PsiWin query
I've just reinstalled PsiWin v 2.3 on my PC, which runs Windows XP. I was logged on as Administrator to install it. I get the same problem I've always had with the PsiWin/XP combination: PsiWin works fine when I'm logged on as Administrator but refuses to connect when I'm logged on as a different user. How do I fix this?
TIA,
Chris
