Dear Friends,

do you have a "Proporta" case for 5mx (or MC218) in top condition you might give away or sell ?
I am ready to pay (obviously also for the shipping) via PayPal (preferred) or any other way.
(Please contact me directly:<address truncated>

Best regards to all the ..."Digestives" ...

Subject: File date/time stamp

I'm sorry but this is rather long.

I have posted here about the change in date/time stamp when files are
backed up from a Psion to Windows by PsiWin, for a few years.  For those
new to this list, the Psion was designed for use while travelling.  This
was so that if you moved between time zones and kept your Psion in the
correct zone, travelling between say, USA and Europe, a file updated
later would still have a later date/time stamp, when you put your local
clock back.

But Windows was not as cleaver (what a surprise!).  This caused PsiWin
to do a full backup twice a year, at the first backup after the clocks
changed.  The reason was that PsiWin used the date/time stamp to quickly
check for a change to a file, and if there was no change, there was no
need to backup that file.

The effect was that the time changed by an hour (in my case - I've only
ever travelled to Europe CET).

The way to overcome this problem (for me) was to never again use the
nice summer time change feature on my Psions.  Now I change my Psion
clocks by an hour.

For years, I've never used the automatic Windows daylight saving
feature, after finding that as I booted between 4 partitions, I found
that my clock was 4 hours wrong!

Recently, it was posted that XP had had the bug removed and that there
was no longer a problem.

However after the last stupid change of time, I found PsiWin doing a
full backup of my Psions.  The only explanation I can think of, is that
when I've installed a Micro$oft product (AutoRoute), all the extra files
added to my XP, presumably to bring it up to date, has introduced a new
bug.

So beware.

I've now become aware of further problems with the date/time stamps in
XP, which could be of interest to folk like Itamar, who use digital
cameras.

Most will know that digital cameras add data into the .jpg file, which
includes the time that the photograph has been taken.  Recently some GPS
programs have added features that can match the date/time stamp that a
photo was taken with the GPS location at the same time.  I have such a
program, GarTrip, but have not had the time to test those new features.

I have discovered that Windows has different date/times for a single
photo.

When displaying a Windows directory of a folder, by default it shows the
'Date Modified' for all files.  I have been organising all my
photographic files including digital camera files by date of photo.
(they were in folders as saved on the CF cards)  I decided to use View |
Choose Details... and add 'Date Picture Taken' and 'Camera Model', as
I've just added a new camera.

I've found some inconsistencies.  By hovering the mouse over a photo
file, the contents of the .jpg file is displayed.  This is one or two
hours before the 'Date Modified' time.  The added 'Date Picture Taken'
time is closer, but the math used by Windows has a few seconds
difference in some cases.

Copying a photo to my Psion 7 I find that the time shown (use <Ctrl+P>)
is 3 or 2 hours after the photo was taken.

Has anyone else seen this?

I would point out that since I bought my first GPS over 10 years ago,
they have always been kept on GMT.  My cameras have also been kept on
GMT.  I don't use summer time on these devices.

Incidentally I am using my Psions to index my photos but displaying them
(mostly) on XP.

Alan.

This seems like a valid point...

In light of the previous point, I think that this is an excellent suggestion.  Although a bit of a mouthful, perhaps the full name of The Digest should be "The Keyboarded Smartphone/PDA Digest", or just "The Digest" for short :-)

P.S.  Whatever happens, I may leave the Digest anyway.  There hasn't been anything to really interest me for some time...

I wrote before that GoodSync was a freeware product, but it isn't.
Sorry.
After several months the program ask you for a registration. The registration fee is €19,00.
But, when you deinstall the program and install it again, then you get a new trail period of several months.

Regards Kees.

Re.: Future of Digest - But if we take the keyboard (thumbboard) as a restriction what about all the Symbian machines that do not have one ? On the other hand, it might be an idea .... we'll see.

Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re.: Treo 650 - It was on 4/10/06 in digest no. 995. However, in my humble opinion you don't give exact details how it compares (or not) with your Psion's and where it does and/or does not replaces your Psions. And some of the things you describe are certainly true for for example the Qtek and similar machines as well.
