Subject: RE: WIFI internet on Netbook

I have read digests 1007 & 8 giving positive feedback on WIFI on a Netbook. I am interested in doing the same, however I could do with some questions answered:
1. Will any WIFI card do, or are there specific ones to buy.  Do they need software drivers to work?  How do I set it up?
2. Which is the best software to use with them: web or opera.
3. Which is the latest version of opera available for the Netbook & can it be downloaded free now, or is it still purchase only?
4. Can hotmail be read on the Netbook?
5. Anything else relevant to a new WIFI user on the Netbook...

Many thanks for any help & advice given

Hi again.
Resubscribing briefly for one question.

Anyone interested in a 'French' MC218, bought new in September?
Or any French-speaking psioneer interested in swapping an 'English' or 'German' 5mx or MC218 for the French one?

It works perfectly for French. French accents on the keyboard. Basically constructed for azerty.
Also perfect for English. Qwerty reestablished with KeyB Layout on included CF-card. Piece of cake. Ready for use.

The problem is that KeyB Layout does not work with the Scandinavian едц etc, or the German ь, or the Slavonic diacritics. The reason is that the French accents are on the numeral keyrow. And therefore the numeral keys cannot be used to install these characters in KeyB Layout. The only clumsy solution is to tap on Special characters and use global replacement. So I have gotten myself a netBook instead.

If anyone is interested drop a line to ulla.axel_at_ telia.com. The price in September was 149 euro, but there is room for discussion.

Chris,

>> "Therefore, I think that Cyril's comment would make a useful restriction: PDAs/phones which in some way carry on the design ideals of the Psions. On this basis, to my mind, keyboard entry would be a test for inclusion on the Digest. This would restrict the field considerably."

In light of the previous point, I think that this is an excellent suggestion.  Although a bit of a mouthful, perhaps the full name of The Digest should be "The Keyboarded Smartphone/PDA Digest", or just "The Digest" for short :-)<<

Although I can see why this might be attractive to some people, I think that this might be a bit too restrictive. Effectively, it would mean we could talk about ie. Windows Mobile devices *having* a keyboard, but not about Symbian devices *not* having a keyboard. As many Psion fans (myself included) have, for obvious reasons, moved/upgraded to such Symbian devices, this would effectively exclude the very people that the (EPOC) digest was originally aimed at. I'm not sure that this would be such a good idea in the long term....

Furthermore, there are potentially many other tests that we could apply. Is it properly multi-tasking (this rules out Palm devices, even those with a keyboard), does it rarely crash (this probably rules out most Windows Mobile/PocketPC devices), is it a "real" PDA (this rules out small-form-factor computers such as UMPCs or the OQO, which both run versions of Windows XP) etc. If you want rock-steady reliability, with or without a keyboard, then Symbian is still the way to go. Which kind of leaves us back where we started.

My inclination would be to allow discussion about any type of PDA/Smartphone, regardless of OS, keyboard etc. This for three main reasons:

1. apart from a few notable exceptions, the general attitude of subscribers is very good, meaning that people are free to ask questions, describe their experiences etc.;

2. As many people move away from their Psions, the most relevant information about what device to move to comes from others who have already made the transition;

3. I suspect that many upgraders will stick with Symbian, due to its EPOC origins, meaning that much content will still be relevant to many subscribers.

Alan,

>>I have posted here about the change in date/time stamp when files are backed up from a Psion to Windows by PsiWin, for a few years.  For those new to this list, the Psion was designed for use while travelling. This was so that if you moved between time zones and kept your Psion in the correct zone, travelling between say, USA and Europe, a file updated later would still have a later date/time stamp, when you put your local clock back.

But Windows was not as cleaver (what a surprise!).  This caused PsiWin to do a full backup twice a year, at the first backup after the clocks changed.  The reason was that PsiWin used the date/time stamp to quickly check for a change to a file, and if there was no change, there was no need to backup that file.<<

It's not entirely clear from what you say whether it's Windows that's not so clever, or PsiWin. Having been singularly unimpressed with PsiWin ever since I bought my first Psion, my inclination would be to blame PsiWin.

Cheers, Ian.

If the new iPhone is based on MacOS X, it really doesn't matter what is missing in software because in time, programmers will be make the necessary shareware.

A Playstation with MacOS ? What more could we possibly hope for ?

Hi folks,

On the subject as to whether the expanded Digest (if it happens) should contain postings only on PDAs which have keyboard input, my vote is that this is overly restrictive.  I think that many people would like to ask questions (or give advice) on machines with other methods of input as well? I may be biased, as my Axim X51v does not have keyboard input; but then neither do about half the machines advertised in Palmtop User Magazine...

Re.: Treo 650 - It was on 4/10/06 in digest no. 995. However, in my humble opinion you don't give exact details how it compares (or not) with your Psion's and where it does and/or does not replaces your Psions. And some of the things you describe are certainly true for for example the Qtek and similar machines as well.

Hi Itamar, basically all smartphones can do the same things but whereas my Revo + was treated like a mini laptop, the Treo has become a constant part of my life due to it's reliability, portability, and ease of use.

Mike Dyer.
