Subject: Nokia Phones & E90
Hi there,
I have been reading with some interest about the E90 phones etc, as I am thinking about replacing my Nokia 6230i phone.
The main reason for replacing is that the screen on the 6230i is small (and I am nearer 60 that 50 years old !) and I would like something a little better all round really !
I looked long and hard and was literally seconds away from buying (nearly pressed the "Buy button) a HP hw6915 (sorry guys, it uses Windows Mobile).
So what stopped me ?
Well I already have a HP hx4700 PDA, and it suddenly dawned on me that the new one was the same size (just about same weight too), and
I don't fancy carrying something that big around !
For ME (and I stress that everyone has different needs and tastes, hence all the phones around) it would be a burdon to carry round, as would the E90 (once again, apologies !) as I am retired (ill health) and I used my phone/PDA's for pleasure rather than the business aspect ! I used to like my big "Canon New-F1" 35mm camera (I was a pro Photographer at one point) but now I have a nice small "Canon
PowerShot S70" (7.1MP) and I wouldn't even think of carrying round a modern 'SLR type' camera now .... Why ?
Well the weight isn't there anymore ..... the BULK is !
The phone that I now fancy, but it is not out until March, is the Nokia N95 .. so why ?
Here are the features I like in it :-
* Bluetooth built in
* Wi-Fi built in
* 5MP Camera
* Good MP3 player with standard 3.5mm jack plug on the phone !
* 3G phone, so high speed downloads
* GPS system AND software built in (I don't drive but good for
walking round unknown towns !)
* 2.6" screen, very similar to my PDA screens.
* Oh, you can actually use it as a phone too !
Unfortunately the full specifications have not been released yet, and I would like to see one "in the wild" first but it does look good. It was also on "The Gadget Show" this week, and they loved it !
What I wouldn't really use it for :-
* Phone calls (most of my use is 99% texts !)
* email : nice to have as a feature, but I have no emails that urgent now !
What I normally carry all the time when I go out is my Sony MP3
player (with GOOD earphones - but these will now plug into a N95), my phone (it only has a 1.3MP camera though).
Also MOST of the time I carry my Canon S70 camera and maybe a PDA (less so). I THINK the N95 can replace all of these !
I am not saying I WILL get one, as I will also look at the Nokia communicators too (I believe they are releasing three of them ?) and
as I will be buying one (NOT on contract) if it is "silly money" I
won't bother ...
So basically : "Watch this space"
Any comments/thoughts from anyone would be appreciated !
Kindest Regards,
Steve Denney

Subject: Re: Psion Journal
I kept meaning to ask what happened to the Psion Journal. Issue 3 was supposed to be my first issue, and I was expecting to get back-issues 1 & 2 along with it.
But Issue 3 is still not out (AFAIK), despite supposedly being nearly ready (and/or sent to the printers, I forget) a long time ago.
Is Will Green alright? Will we ever see Issue 3?
But I can't complain too loudly, since I never paid for the Journal - it was a prize won on Epoc Chat. (Although I would have paid for it, if I hadn't won a subscription.)

Subject: Rollable Displays
Hi all,
perhaps rollable displays will solve the small phone / large display dilemma.
According to Brighthand.com such a phone is shortly to be released.

Subject: Re. E90
While I have a certain sympathy with (former) Psion users continuously comparing new releases with Psions from a bygone age, the fact remains that there is essentially no market out there for the devices which Psion aficionados hanker after. If there was (were!), Psion would probably have filled it. The fact is, Psion got out when it became clear that their devices, while fantastically well conceived (if not constructed), were not the sort of devices most users were after; hence the success of Palm, and later Microsoft.
I firmly believe that a sort of 5mx/phone hybrid will never appear; the Nokia communicator range, while flawed in certain respects, is about as good as it is going to get. The choice of S60 instead of S80 would appear to introduce some severe limitations in how effective the E90 is; however, it does appear to be a sensible choice on Nokia's part, and probably guarantees the communicator's continuing survival.
Let's face it; should such a son-of-5mx ever be produced, some here would complain because it didn't use AA batteries.... ;)
The problem of OPL, while a separate issue, is linked in a way to the apparent "dumbing down" of the platform as a whole. I personally find it a great pity, as OPL always was one of Psion's strengths. However, OPL barely worked under Symbian 7, so I guess we've seen the last of it....
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: The death of OPL (E90), Motorola Z8,
Answer to: Chris Handley
Re.: The death of OPL (E90) - I agree with you concerning OPL and the MACRO5 program has got a lot to do with it for people like me who don't write OPL themselves but can use MACRO5 to automate sequences of instructions and writeh small "programs". For much the same reason I still use Lotus123 more than Excel as I can write macros in the command language which is simple combining different functions much like macro5 while in excel you need to learn visual basic to do the same (and I have macros of over 150 lines that do complicated things). I wonder whether or not the Psions would have been as useful without macro5 & OPL ? My current phone has a Today screen and a launcher from where I can reach most programs in one or two hits, but it is not the same. I also agree with you as said before that the E90 is not a replacement of the Psions, but will any phone ever be ? The Psions were not phones and a phone/PDA combination will always have to compromise on both the phone and the PDA side.
To All
Re. Motorola Z8 - Is no-one interested anymore in the UIQ platform and the fact that after a long time of absence Motorola introduced a new UIQ phone and that it apparently compares favourably to the SE machines ? Anyone wiht information of opinion in this matter ?

Subject: Psion Journal Issue 3
Hi Keith,
I'm sorry I didn't respond to your email, I think it must of got spam- filtered out. I don't know why the other got returned, the domain is all paid up.
One Psion dead with a Apple Newton interim and pleased to say I've got a new Psion off eBay in Jan and things are back on (admitted, very slow) track.
Completed for Issue 3 so far are:
PsiDat Tutorial (massive)
Author in Focus - Steve Litchfield
Review/Tutorial: NodeMap (amazing application)
Breathing new life into Abandonware: a guide to Register, RegIT, RegSuite, RevTrans and a look into the morals of cracking Abandonware. Mac & Psion: An indepth guide to using your Mac (OSX mainly) with a Psion.
RetroMac - The Psion collector - a guide to what is collectable and valuable in the world of Psion.
Part II of Business Suite tutorial for SIBO.
Morgan Muses More.
PsiLinux - continued progress.
Part II of Series 3mx/EPOC comparison (the software side)
RMR Advert
Free OPL Advert
The bits that need to be finished are:
Adventure and your Psion - a guide to nautical Psion Software.
News - I keep changing it due to later and later release dates (have you checked out the newish Psion podcast?)
Tips - I have non
Letters - non of those either
As the Psion faithful get fewer putting the Journal together gets longer to do, I think - infact know - that I've bitten off more than I can chew and the result is letting people down and unacceptable delays between Journal release dates. I'm sorry.
But if you (addressed to Digest readers) fancy adding the occasional article/tutorial/letter/tips to the journal it would be wonderful. I'm happy to pay for good sized articles and tutorials (not massive amounts I'm afraid) and any h
Viva la Psion!
Will.

Subject: question PsiXPda
Good morning everybody.
Does anyone have experience with the POS Ltd-produced PsiXPda?
I know it is a Psion MX Pro, re-manufactured by POS with new (??)
original Psion parts.
I know POS as a serious brand; they repaired the screen cable of my old
Ericsson MC218 (the Ericsson-branded clone of the 5MX), but I have no
direct experience with the PsiXPda, e.g, is the screen cable now
improved? Did someone say that the screen is a little better than the
original?
Thanks for any info,
Kind regards.
