Answer to: Mike Dyer

Re.: diary/calendar - I would first have to see the week screen on your Treo 600 before I can judge whether something else exists or not. I am now tryingAgendus on my WM5 phone and find it quite complete as well.
And I also agree with you, new is not always better, quite the contrary. with everything new there exists this desire by the creators to change things, also those that are functioning extremely well already.

Hi Itamar,

well you can see a screenshot here:

The tinyurl creator I use is a free extension of the firefox web browser, I thoroughly recommend them both. I can right click on any page and instantly create a tinyurl.

I second Fergus Flanagan's comment about the Palm OS Treo, as he posted in the last digest,

"Oh yes back to my suggestion, got the Palm Treo 650, something I never though I would ever do, go back to Palm that is. I use to have a run of Palm PDAs including Clie and a Handera. I won't go on about how much I like it and how seamlessly it combines pda and phone functionality in one device. The fact is it works so damn well."

I'm reluctant ever to change operating systems, Palm OS is just brilliant for pda use, so clear , quick, and concise. Anything else I've seen just looks like a toy.

Regards,

Mike Dyer.

WIFI on netBook & O2 XDA Exec

Firstly, I have just purchased a Orinoco silver WIFI card and now need help to connect it to my home BT Wireless Broadband and in the longer term Internet Café WIFI, etc.  I have tried looking for notes on the Web, but either do not understand the notes, or for some reason cannot get the card to function, let alone connect.

Currently no lights come on the card at any time, NetStatRF state “Radio not active” and opera gives me an error message when I try to connect.

The 7 areas of software that I require advice are:

1. Ethernet setting – set to Lucent/Orinoco RLAN – edit settings?
2. Modem settings.  Required?  Which setting?
3. Internet settings?
4. NetStatRF? – required?
5. FFinger - required
6. Opera – any settings required
7.             BT connection password - when & where is this inputted?  How to I "discover" my BT WIFI connection?

At which point should I see the WIFI card lights come on & what should I be looking for?

Secondly I have just bought a second hand XDA exec, locked to O2.  This is most definitely not a Psion replacement, but meant as a travel WIFI device (see above problems!)  My P910 & netBook are still my main devices! :^) However, has anyone has the exec and managed to remove the O2 sim lock. Again I have found some info on the web, but any advoce would be helpful. Finally, I have tried TomToms PPC version of routeplanner/citymaps on the XDA, which generally crash in use.  Has anyone else tried this successfully?

Many thanks for your help

Subject: funny behaviour with Sandisk 512 MB

I have been using Sandisk CFs in my netBook for years now, including a 512MB model (1999 release).  I switched to Sandisk following a bad experience with a 256MB card that exhibited very strange behaviour.  Since then I have had a 1GB Ultra II and then a 2GB Extreme III al have performed very well and I have been able to take advantage of increased write speeds.

I run applications off of the card all the time.

I can only guess at the problem, first are you sure that it is a genuine Sandisk: I have heard stories of cards procured on ebay that were fakes.  It is, in part due to the implementation of the CF standard: Sandisk stick to this to the letter, not all cards do, these can often work well in a PC but not in the Psion, which is a little more specific in its interface to the card.  Also, what is the error message when you try to load apps from it?

It may be worth running DiskCheck (on your PC) on the card and also back up the card to the PC and reformat then copy the files back - if there are corruptions on the card, this process should show them up and the format clear them.  The copying may have to be done directory by directory to eliminate any bad files (if there are any).

I agree, I have just upgraded my phone from a SE K750i to the SE K800i and the performance of the 750s camera in low light is superior to that of the 800!  Also, there seem to be one or two bugs with the phone that were not in the 750.

Phones these days can do more and more, not all of it useful and some of it a waste of space, however, this is the direction of the market and we have to get used to the new.

I currently use my SE K800i to pick up e-mail as I did with my K750i, however, I noticed that the 800 can be told to download just headers or the e-mail up to the download limit (don't know what that is though).  There is also an option to go get e-mail periodically.  This is not push e-mail but could do what you want it to.  I use a POP3 e-mail account and the messages stay on the server so I can later download them onto my Outlook for keeping etc.

Dear All,
Subject: where next?

Windows Mobile 6 has been announced which improves upon WM5 and there may be some new devices coming out this this on.

What if someone was to write a proper Psion emulator, one that could also run the C++ Apps and have a configurable UID.  All the emulator would have to do would be to load the OS and off you go, we could turn a PC in to a Psion running EPOC5!  The emulator could also access the Internet and there might be scope for a upgrade to the OS with printing over bluetooth/WiFi and it would scale to fit the screen available.  Also, the Silk screen buttons could become soft buttons that really reflect the netBooks.  The original Emulator was only really a developers' tool and was not written to replace a Psion.

Perhaps one day this will happen, there are emulators for many retro computers so why doesn't some clever person with in-depth Psion knowledge write one for us?  I for one would pay for it!  And it would solve all the problems - modern device and connectivity options retro Psion apps and games and off we go!  It might even support PsiWin over BlueTooth/WiFi/USB2!

We all want something that doesn't exist - A true Psion Emulator would fill the gap!  Imagine a netBook running on a 1.5GHZ laptop with a SSD harddrive!

Regards
David

Hi Folks,

Les., the Psion emulators might be on Martin Guthrie’s Pscience5 site (http://www.pscience5.net/).

But even the smallest version is pretty big unless you’re on broadband (I’m not). I’ve got the EMCC CD, the 3lib CD and the Potting Shed CD and it’s on at least one of them. It’s not on the PsiWin CD as it is supposed to be just a development tool, not actually a Psion product.

Happy days,
Phil.

Subject: Good news from Vista - Emulator versus Netbook - Sandisk 512 MB

Good news from Vista
I had to change my PC. I can testify that PsiWin works with Vista. The explorer has not the same limitation as with XP.
The issue is naturally the lack of serial port. I managed the connection with Irda. Ircomm2k installs without any problem, and then Psiwin recognises the Irda com port.
DsLink and Mocha W32 ppp work also.
The only limitation I experimented is with the backup of the CFCard. The process stops (not with the internal drive6. The same with Mocha or DsLink after some times (it did the same with XP). See if it would be the same with a cable connection. (Anyway, it is very easy to backup the CFCard by just inserting it in the card reader.)

To Les
I can't remember where I found the emulator. It is not present at Pscience5 site. (A suggestion to Martin Guthrie ?). I have it somewhere on my hard disk and can send it, if it's not too heavy.

To Chris Handley
I did not mean to use the emulator to what EPOC is already clumsy. So, it is not so relevant that " The Emulator can NOT access the internet".

No, on the contrary, I meant to take only the best of the two worlds :
* internet, emails, complicated Office works and so on, with MS Windows (without the emulator)
* and the emulator for Agenda, contacts, simple databases... with the ease of speed, colour and large keyboard (the 5 mx keyboard is sufficient for me, but well...) : you can so type everything directly on the CF card when you have some time to work at ease. And when you take the CF card back to the 5 mx, "it will wake-up & sound an alarm for you" and you can have all your datas in your (quite big) pocket.
* Psiwin is just a way to connect both devices, convert files... (apart from taking away the CF card).

Sandisk 512 MB
To Franco Cozzani
I don't think it's a matter of size when the CF cards do not work on EPOC. It's just a matter of... I don't know. But some big size cards do work and some small size cards don't.

Cheers,
Jean Guillonneau

Hello!

For those with a Taknet account with Psion Teklogix, the emulator can be found here:
http://www.psionteklogix.com/teknet/pdk/netpad-pdk/epoc_downloads.htm. The OPL SDK ist the file you want.

All others may ask me via E-Mail. :)

Looking for a blackberry like smartphone with 3G?

I'm an (almost happy) user of the Nokia E61, a tiny internet device that doubles as a phone. ;)

- 3G, GPRS, multiband
- IrDA, Bluetooth, WLAN
- thumbboard
- Symbian S60
- web, email, WAP, Java, ...
- push email is mentioned in the manual
- no touchscreen (so nothing can break)
- no camera (the successor E61i is said to have one)

The phone is really small and lightweight. It is wider than my 6310i but thinner.

I haven't been able to succsessfully link it to my EPOC machines as a modem, yet. But since its internet capabilities are so good, I can live without for the moment. If you manage to get a 3G connect (depending on were you are), web access is considerably faster than with GPRS but the latter suffices in most circumstances. There is no way (or need) to manually switch between the networks.

I couldn't find an adaptor for my hands free car kit. A new car kit would have been too expensive. I've therefore kept my 6310i with a second SIM (e-plus, Germany).

I like the E61.

Both can be cured by installing Franson GpsGate. The software is cheap (around 20 Euros). Its original purpose is to provide connectivity from
GPS receivers to multiple applications but you can "short circuit" two
virtual com ports so that they talk directly to eachother.

>+ The Emulator canNOT access the internet (so can't use Email), unless you can find out how to configure RAS (or something).  I was never able to find any explanations or help with that, so I'd say it's impossible for the majority of people.

With the virtual COM port and the right RAS/Internet sharing software
you can manage to have that work, too. It should even be possible to
set up two pairs of virtual ports so that both connections (PsiWin and
Internet) coexist.

I havn't tried this myself yet but I know that GpsGate works for a
similar case (HP calculator emulation and connectivity software)

Subject: nokia 9500 & netbook

Is their anyone out their that uses the 9500 & netbook in the US only? I am interested in this combo, but have many questions about compatibility between these to units here in the states using T-Mobile
ex.
Like faxing from the 9500 - can I fax from any program that can print like the netbook?
IR transfering of PDF files, sheet files ect... to & fro
I know that the 9200 series had built in converters to save doc.s as epoc & MS word, is this feature in the 9500 unit?
Can I embed objects in word like sheets n pic.s
Does emailing work without the limitations that the netbook has (ex...smtp)?
