* Took out the 30 MB flash card I downloaded and put it in the left * drive slot.
* It has a file downloaded from the Psion Teklogix website called: * NB-453US,IMG
* Nothing. When turned on I get the basic screen (My School Book).
Hello Jim,
You need the malaybook-os.zip file
http://hasbrouck.org/netbook/Remove the backup battery, put the CF with the malaybook os into the D-drive and turn on the MBook and the OS will be loaded on your MBook.

For Steve Denney :
I'm using SanDisk 512MB CF cards in my 5mx and both D & E drives of my netBook, regular, not Ultra, etc. - no problems.
Sorry, but I, too, can't think of a solution.
For Jim Watson-Gove:

I had problems with at US file. You may want to try it. If so, your file should read NB_453&S.img. Rename it to os.img. That should do it.
Otherwise, go to
http://www.psionteklogix.com/teknet/pdk/netbook-pdk/downloads.htmand get the UK version (NB_450uk.zip). Extract, then re-name.

Subject: Re: Limitations of CompactFlash Cards
I have a 5mx plus a netBook. I have an unpartitioned 1GB card in the nB (which is big enough to allow a 2004 Tome Raider file of Wikipedia plus loads of TomTom Route and Street maps). I find that the 1GB card works fine in the mx.
According to Martin Guthrie's page:
http://www.pscience5.net/CFPartition.htm
an mx can 'see' up to 2GB and a 7/nB can see up to 4GB without partitioning. In addition, larger cards can be partitioned up to four times to allow an mx access to 8GB and a nB 16GB. If you read the article there he makes clear that not all cards are created equal, and you may come up against problems with some cards that you don't with others. If you go over to the PDAStreet Psion forums, you should be able to find posts describing other users' experiences with various brands.
My recommendation to all those in the UK thinking of upgrading CF memory:
http://www.7dayshop.com
If you look in the CompactFlash category they are selling 1GB cards for £4.99 and 2GB cards for £8.49 plus £3.95 postage. These are both Psion-compatible as my 1GB came from here (if you look at the pictures, it's the card with the little purple square in the top left corner). Apparently they are non-branded Toshiba cards.

Chris

Subject: OPL code idea
I am considering if it is possible to control a laptop used for picture
slideshows with a Psion. The slideshow requires a mouse right or left
click, to forward or back a slide display.
I have an IR mouse and was wondering if anyone had used the Psion IR
output to a mouse IR receiver?
I could hopefully write an OPL app to output these two signals.
In the old days of DOS I could do the following, but not sure with OPL.
Get the app to open a Data file (or open it manually previously) then
put the new OPL app into the foreground (FG) with a transparent display,
so that the Data file page would still be visible.
To move to the next slide, an OPL key or screen tap, could then output a
mouse click IR signal and also put Data into the FG and force a new
page. Then put itself into the FG for the next user input.
It this possible? I'm not looking for code (unless there are any
offers) but don't want to waste my time if the outline given is not
possible.
The Psion would then provide prompt details for the presenter to talk to
the audience and only a single action to move to the next slide and next
prompt.

Yes please.
Chris I was for many years using a Nokia 6210e + 5mx for all my e-mails,
using Orange Everyday 50. I even used the 6210 for web browsing (cable
to W98) before I changed to Tiscali broadband. Going to Tiscali was a
very big mistake and I'm now back on dial-up with T-online and getting a
much faster service.
[The actual speed is slower, but there are no long gaps with zero speed
!!!]
I would like to return to mobile e-mail. I've been able to hold a dummy
BlackBerry 8800 in a Vodafone shop, but found the k'brd of a Palm Treo
750v far superior in feel. But being non-working, I was unable to
investigate their software. They also sell the Nokia E61, but they did
not have one on display.
I've held a working Nokia 9300, but this was sometime ago. I would
probably prefer a 9500.
I use everyday a 5mxPRO, S7 and a 3mx. The PRO is used as a portable
copy of the S7 using EpocSync. The 3mx is used only for Agenda as
opening a 5 as often would probably kill the screen cable. Also the PRO
version gets through Duracells more rapidly than my two 5mx (now in
store). Would the 9500 be suitable for Agenda? I could then retire the
3mx for a 9500.
SUBJECT: CF card capacity.
I have used larger cards in my 5mx and an IBM CFII 1GB in my nB (now in
store). Not tested the 2GB I now have in my camera.
But I have two main rules.
Always format on a Psion and only ever write to on a Psion. On Windows
only read.
As Windows can't handle file date/time in the directory, I guess that
there are also other problems when Windows writes to a CF used in a
Psion.

Subject: MalayBook for sale
I have just bought an almost new original netBook & so am selling my MBook.
It has had a lot of use, but is still in good condition, with a brand new keyboard. The screen cable is a bit loose - loses touch screen position every so often, but still works. Auto on/off microswitch no longer works.
Otherwise still in good condition. Comes with the following:
MBook with stylus
32mb CF with OS
P/S
Sync cable and software
Orinoco WIFI Silver card
spare 1800mAh main battery
quick start guide
user manual on CD
Asking £150 for lot...
Thanks

Subject: Re: Oops MBook dead
I just found a posting from David Lir on rebooting the OS into a MBook. He states:
"To successfully load the OS on a Malaysian netBook:
01.) Place the Malaysian version of the OS Image file (OS.IMG) at the root of a CF card sitting in the lefthand tray (D:). The card may be formatted Fat 12 or Fat 16.
etc etc"
The OS I downloaded from the Psion site is NB-453US,IMG.
Nothing worked.
So reading a saved message from David Lir (when all else fails, etc etc...) I went up to:
http://hasbrouck.org/netbook/#psion
and downloaded the malaybook OS and renamed it OS.img.
I took out both batteries and placed CF card with OS.img in the root and replaced the large battery.
It beeped once and gave me the One-Ed screen. Nothing happening
------
whoops!!! it just beeped again as I type this (a minute and a half later) and I have the, glorioski, epoc screen.
I guess David Lir should have added (for me) "patience,my boy.
My two 5mx's are down with the cable disease and losing the backup MBook was a bit much.
So back to the trenches.
the Best,
