>>Re.: Symbian Agendas - As far as I remember this is not possible with the Symbian machines as the agenda is part of the PIM details and is not kept in a specific file. Also all the third party agenda programs sit on top of the Symbian Agenda and add functions to it. It is exactly the same with my WM5 machine.<<

I think you are wrong in this case. On my P910i, there is a file called Agenda in C:\Documents\Agenda, which is the main (only) Agenda file; similarly, there is a file called C:\System\Data\Contacts.cdb, which is the Contacts file. I would be very surprised if any device stored all of its PIM details (ie. Agenda, Contacts, Tasks etc.) in a single file, as there would be no real advantage to this, and it would generally make life harder for the programmers....

Cheers, Ian.

Subject: Retiring - HTC Blue Angel - What next?

I reach retirement in 4 months and have to change all sorts, not just my pda.

The Blue Angel (Orange M200/SPV) gets itself in a knot when I run TomTom sat nav on it.

This may be a conflict between TomTom and Widows Mobile.

Often the phone dials out but I can't hear the person answering.

Often I am called but get no ringing.

The  re-boot to resolve these issues takes for ever.

The thumb board that was so attractive when I bought it, has shrunk as my eyes and hands get much less capable.

The styluses keep losing themselves - I now use a short very fat pen instead on a lanyard, 99p from the Mothers' Union - I have bought
nine. The pens write, too.

I hope to be spending far less on phone bills.

The best replacement I have seen so far is the XDA Exec.

I should be able to type the hospital appointments into that keboard more easily. Is there a better one?

Can I hang it on a lanyard?

I will be happy to consider non-Windows machines but do want  a scheduler/sat nav/and phone combination.

But accept that sat nav on a dedicated machine may perhaps be more realistic.

But I would be grateful for suggestions and comments.

I don't really understand the requirement for a key/thumbboard?

For example, I've used O2's Orbit device recently. It's a very compact Windows Mobile 5 phone with inbuilt GPS, GM Radio, etc. Pretty much the same as Itamar's device but with no keyboard. Based of this, it would be excluded from this Digest. Before I bought my P910i, I had a Palm Tungsten. Again, no keyboard, so excluded. The new UMPC devices now trickling onto the market would also be excluded as they have no keyboard. But then, if you used a bluetooth external keyboard, would they be included? By excluding keyboards you are also excluding by far the biggest number of Symbian devices out there - Nokia's Series 60 devices, the vast majority of which only have a numeric keypad.

As it happens, this exclusion will not impact on me based on my current and planned phones, but I do feel it's a bit arbitrary.

When I sent in my own submission to this subject, I said:

> I would be happy for the Digest to be extended to cover other OSs. I would then see this new Digest covering:
>
> o Smartphones covering all OSs (including Symbian, Windows PPC, Palm and Lynix, etc)
> o PDAs covering all OSs (including EPOC, Palm and Windows, etc)
>
> or, more generically, all handheld devices with/without inbuilt communications. Maybe the only question is where the line is drawn - i.e. there are now
> lots of handheld PCs available. I would say, if it fits in the hand it should be included, the only exception allowed being the Psion S7 family of course

All the best from Dublin, Ireland

ANSWER:  I think this Digest Team has got a very good record of not censoring messages. I meant to say that we will try and endeavour to make clear to the subscribers that we would prefer it to deal mostly with key/thumbboard type of machines. The reason is that otherwise the scope of the digest will become so wide that it will be too wide a scope to deal with and there are already so many other sources for such subjects. However, we will continue not to censor messages and if you or anyone else would like to discuss these wider subjects there will be no objection from our part. I hope this explains it better. Best regards,  Itamar Engeslman

Re.: Treo Upgrade - I note you write you use "Documents to go" on your Treo. I am interesting to hear from users whether you are really using this (and similar) programs on your smartphones to write documents. I find I can't really work with a thumbboard beyond small entries in my diary, contacts and the like. Do you edit them on your phone and than finalise the editing on your computer before printing ?

The same quantity of free software is available for the POcket PC and WM3/5 machines with several websites giving free software only. I think I already gave my list of software I use on my Qtek 9100 but if someone is interested let me know and I will repeat it again. It is quite a long list <G>.

Re.: HTC may have pulled it off this time... - You could be right, although .... I wonder what the price of this machine will be ?  Also, the size is about 2/3 of a netbook and I wonder how the keyboard will work with the clearly smaller keys. The article also writes that theypresume it will have a decent CPU and GPU but no details available. How fast will it start up and close if it has the full Windows Vista ?  Personally, I think that as you can't put it in your pocket anyhow it might as well be a little larger, thereby cheaper and better keyboard.

Best regards,

Itamar
