Subject: Window Mobile Without Outlook?
I'm thinking about switching from an old Palm m515 + Nokia 6230i phone to a single device.
Two questions, please:
1. If I switch to Windows Mobile (WM), probably the HTC TyTN II (aka Kaiser) I'm concerned because I don't have Outlook installed on my PC and I don't really want to have to either pay for it or use it. Does Outlook come in the box with WM6 PDA-phones? How else does a WM6 PDA-phone sync contact details, calendar/diary, ToDos etc. that are native apps on the Palm and supported by the Palm Desktop?
2. If I switch to Symbian, probably the Nokia N95, I'm not so worried about synching because I think the Nokia comes with its own desktop suite. Is that correct? What does interest me is the possibility of running some of my Palm apps using the Garnet emulator (http://www.access-company.com/products/gvm/).This is advertised as running on "Nokia N series" but there is no mention of the N95, only "internet tablets". Does the N95 count as an "N-series" in this context? I have asked the makers of the emulator but no response yet ...
Any other comments about my upgrade plans would be most welcome.

Subject: Re: iPod Touch
Hi Itamar,
regarding your intention to use the iPod Touch as a PDA. I also have a Touch, and paid for the firmware update including the extra software (Mail, Weather, Google Maps etc.) in January. However, there are one or two issues.
1. it is tricky to set up email accounts, as there is a bug. If you try to set up the mail accounts manually, it will persistently fail. If you force it to save the settings anyway, you will then have to go into the advanced settings and tell it NOT to use secure mail, and then change the port accordingly. Alternatively, tell iTunes to sync with a mail account on your PC, and the account settings will be copied across automatically. Very clumsy programming on apple's part.
2. There is a bug in iTunes for Windows. If you connect a Touch to your Windows PC and iTunes is already open, there is a high chance that the time and/or date on your Touch will be set to some random time and/or date. If you close iTunes and reconnect your Touch, the Touch's time and date will be (re)set correctly. This is particularly annoying/stupid/risky/***** (pick your favourite expletive), as it makes using the Touch as a *genuine* PDA a bit hit and miss; this problem is well known to apple, but so far they have resisted actually addressing the issue.
Apart from that, the iPod Touch is a great device, but I am far from convinced that either this or the iPhone are genuine PDA/Smartphone replacements.
Also, having recently bought a set of bluetooth headphones (Jabra BT620s), I am mystified why music player manufacturers do not include bluetooth support in their devices. When listening to music from my E90, I can control both music playback (ie. play/pause, skip tracks and or fast-forward/rewind) and make phone calls with my headphones, but when using the supplied dongle to listen to music from my iPod, all I can do is mute/unmute the music.
Cheers, Ian.

Subject: 9500 cannot open Word document on PCbigfoot)
Hi all,
Had tp swap my 9500 with another one. Restored my backup and all working, expect for opening Word docs on the PC which came from the 9500. Word complains about a path not being found. However if I convert the file on the 9500 to a text file. There is no ptoblem. The file is transfered OK in both cases. It used to work on the old 9500. NIt is a pain in the backside converting the text back in Word but it at least allows me to write documents on the 9500 still.
Any ideas, suggestions, etc.. All welcome.
Yours John.
