Subject: Nokia E90
I read that Itamar and others could be interested in a replacement phone. I have an 'as new' unlocked Nokia E90 that I just bought off eBay UK. I opened the package on Friday and have been playing with it on Friday and Sunday. It is complete and works as advertised. The only thing I noticed is that the label with the bar codes has been removed.
I don't need to tell digestees about this fine machine except to say that it is not for me (personality mismatch) and I will continue with my current
very good devices until a more suitable replacement appears. I therefore plan to drop it off at one of the charity shops in Golders Green to be held for any person who may answer this message expressing an interest, otherwise for sale to any passer by. Any payment will be for the benefit of the charity, not for me. I don't need to know how much will be paid, but I think a fair price would be in the region of GBP 200.00 and I will include the
.sis file for installing the latest release of Quick office version 5 (cost $ 70.00) and the unlock key that can only be used on this particular unit.

Joseph

Hello Chris (and those looking for Psion products),
I can highly recommend:
1. Christoph Pulster
Christoph at pulster.de
and
2. Dirk van Schravendijk
van.schravendijk at hccnet.nl
I ordered one 5mx from each and I received them in Hong Kong about 10 days after receipt of payment. Superb service from both!
Dirk accepts Paypal, whilst Christoph requires bank transfer.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes,

As far as I know, all the earlier versions of Microsoft Works used one
of Microsoft's proprietary file formats. If your friend has a version
of Works that can produce Word Perfect files, they will come with
a .doc extension, not WPS. Microsoft's list of supported format for
one version of Works is here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884182
however different versions of works had different conversion abilities
(or lack of them). There is a Works converter for some versions of
Open Office (but I don't believe your Eee has the required version of
Open Office) http://libwps.sourceforge.net/
Microsoft are reputed to have an appropriate converter on their web
site somewhere.

I dont have my EEE here but Im guessing OpenOffice's word processor should be able to open it. Have you tried saving the attachment first, then switching to the word processor and doing File->Open ? Is there a "File Type" pulldown in the open file dialog?
Worst case scenario is she could re-save in RTF format (File -> Save As, select RTF or "Rich Text" in file tpe pulldown) and sent that to you instead.

RAM being so cheap, I would think the chipset would influence the price far more than the RAM. Please do let us know how the machine is when you get it.

Subject: Microsoft Works files
Microsoft Works came pre loaded on my pc and I used it until buying MicrosoftOffice -Home and Student.
Works has the option to save word processing files in several formats including MS Word . I suggest that Jim's friend saves any files for emailing in Word format. WPS files are Works format and are not universally readable in my limited experience.

I recall that Palmtop cause the app to self modify it's file to include
the machine's ID, when run for the first time.
So copy between machines wont work.
Solution: after installation save a copy of app file before running it.

Subject: HTC Touch Dual,

Re.: HTC Touch Dual - I decided to upgrade to this phone in the end. I prefer it above the Touch Diamond (Cruise) as I don't need Wifi on my phone (got the Ipod Touch for that with a much better screen), I hardly ever used the Wifi. The battery life indeed seems to be poor, but I can recharge both in the office as well as in the car so it is not such a problem and I am not a power user. I got it free of charge with a move from Vodaphone to T-mobile who had an amazing business offer. For 30 pounds per month I got 2 phones, 1,000 minutes free in the UK, Western Europe and the USA as well as 100 texts (I don't need more per month) and free calls between the handsets out of the free minutes.
My initial feeling is very good. The keypad is very handy, specially for my wife when she needs to use my phone. I transfered most of my software to the pphone, including TomTom Navigator 6, without any problems.
I will report back to the digest in a week or two with further remarks about the phone.
Best regards,
Itamar

No, it's a Works word processor file. Almost, but not quite, as useless as
.pub files from Publisher.

There's a free download from Microsoft that will allow Word (and also the
free Word Reader) to import WPS documents. WPS is a poorly-documented
format, and not even Microsoft are comfortable with converting it, as
you'll see by the warning message when the converter runs!
She would be best advised to download OpenOffice.org, which will
read/write Word documents just like Word does (actually better in some
respects) and is free (both as in beer and speech). I now use OpenOffice
exclusively for my business, and haven't yet had a problem opening any
Word documents. It's also useful for extracting images from Word
documents: open in OpenOffice, save in Open Document format, open that
file with a Zip file program, and there are the images in their original
resolution and format :)
Cheers!

Subject: First impressions of HTC Touch Dual
Hi All,
So I got my new phone and I can give you my first impressions. The very first impression was very good. The phone is considerably thinner than my old Qtek 9100 and certainly more "sexy". When you move the front up you get a keypad with numbers and a few buttons to connect to the web, messages and to web and walk, a T-mobile connection. When you move the front upwards you also get a new screen with a choice of new SMS, new MMS, new email, new contact, new appointment, new note and new task. Interestingly I don't miss the keyboard of the Qtek at all, I hardly ever used it as it was quite fiddely to use. The home screen of the phone is very efficient and easy to use to get to a lot of different programs and settings and is completely programmable. I still use iLauncher however and also copied Pocketweather over to the phone. It has got it's own weather program but it works on GPRS and will cost money every time it downloads the weather while Pocketweather downloads the weather when connected via the cable to your PC. It has less outside buttons than the Qtek, one for the camera which you can also program to open up any other program (I set it to the Today screen, I hardly use the camera), a volume adjustment, a central button to choose and which you can also use to move the cursor left, right, up or down. Than it has for the phone an talk and end button and that is it. The socket for the cable is situated on the left side which I think is not as easy as on the bottom of the phone. It has a slot for a microSD disk, I bought a 2 Gb one for just under 15 pound.
The phone also has the TouchFlo software. When the phone ison and you move your finger from the bottom of the screen upwards you get a new screen with shortcuts for the phone to call people, to open contacts and to the history list of your phone. When you move your finger from right to left you get a new screen with a choice of programs, and when you move your finger from left to right the choice between, music, photos or videos. Moving your finger from top downwards brings back the main screen.
Data input is quite easy with a choice of different systems. I downloaded PCM keyboard which works better on this phone tna on the Qtek. It is like the keyboard on the Ipod Touch and shows each letter you touch in bold print to confirm what you pressed.
The syncing of the phone gave quite some problems. It will only work with ActiveSync 4.5 which you need to install from the disc. It took me several tries to get it right. However, on vista it works a lot better with the Microsoft Sync center.
I had a lot of problems connecting the phone to my car bluetooth handsfree system. i did not succeed actually until I found on the internet that I had to upgrade the car system by sending back the unit to the factory for an update. I have a Pama Prowave which I bought at the time at Hallford, and any unit older than 12 months will not work with the newest phones. So I sent it in and currently use my bluetooth earphone. A nice feature is that when I press the button on the earphone the phone automatically opens the voicetag program so if you program your voicetags properly you can use it while driving without too much problems.
The move from Vodaphone to T-mobile went smoothly and today I was only about 1 hour without service and now I have got my old number back.
Sofar my first impressions. In a week or two I will report how I get one. Sofar so good.
Best regards,
Itamar

Subject: No system screen in NetBook
My recently-acquired NetBook responds well to a push on the logo if it loses touch screen. More important to me at this time - somehow I must have accidentally punched one key too many and now I cannot raise the system screen - the screen listing all the files and sub-directories. So I can't copy files from "C" to "D", or IR-them to my backup 5MX.
Any suggestions ??

Subject: StyleTap Again
StyleTap (www.styletap.com) lets one run Palm applications on a Windows Mobile device. However, the FAQs etc. say that conduits are not supported. So, is there anyone out there using StyleTap with e.g Datebk5 or other application that "needs" syncing with a PC? If so, how does one sync the Palm data with the PC? My main reason for asking is that apparently StyleTap plans soon to produce a version that runs on an iPhone or iPod Touch. That could get really interesting ...

Subject: Re:dot wps to dot doc on an eee machine
Jim, My checking indicates a WPS doc is a Works format. Your friend should be able to send you the same doc, resaved as RTF. Instead of just Saving her doc, she must "Save As". There will be a drop down menu and should pick RTF. This may take a bit of playing on her part if she is unfamiliar with "Save As". I'm certain a friend/neighbor can help her and even help write down the steps so she can do again.
OR... you can search the internet for "WPS Converter". I found this MS converter page for a download for you to use instead of her converting, if that is easier. The link may not wrap properly so searching may work best. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=BF41401E-70FA-465D-AE2E-CF44DBF05297&displaylang=en
